In this week’s episode, we discuss the NEW Lightroom Feature that no one's talking about and how it can take your photos to the next level! I've made it well known recently that I've become a huge fan of all the new masking capabilities inside of Lightroom, but there is one new feature that is constantly overlooked by many. And the more I use it, the more it becomes my favorite masking feature in all of Lightroom. In this video, I'll review how I use this tool to enhance specific portions of my photograph in order to emphasize my favorite aspects of a scene I captured during my recent workshop in Greenland. I hope you enjoy this week's video and as always thanks so much for watching! - Mark D.

    🌟QUICK QUESTION: What do you use to Edit your Photos?

  • @thesouringgentleman

    @thesouringgentleman

    10 ай бұрын

    I just make super basic edits for exposure, shadows, highlights, and a starting point for color, the rare times I use color. After that, I bounce it out to photoshop for finer work. But I'm mostly posting to instagram on my black and white account, and much of that is documentary-style photography with minimal edits.

    I mostly use Adobe Camera Raw, and Lightroom second. And of course, Photoshop. I thought about saying that I print my photos and then edit them on the paper with whiteout and crayons. 🤣🤣

    I wish I knew I could have used the dropper tool to remove some of a mask the other week. I spent over 8 hours removing parts of a background from a mask on a bridge I photographed. That would have saved so much time and frustration going over it numerous times trying to get perfect lines.Yep just went back to the photo and copied the original to re edit and 3 clicks instead of 8hours of brush tool so much easier.

    My jaw hit the floor when you did the sailboat mask and removed the sky using color range. Shooting a lot of aerial photography, that is a game changer for me. Thanks!

    I agree, 1000% these LightRoom masking tools are real gamechangers! My “go to” masking tool is Color Range for a large area in a landscape photo. If it selects too much color range, I simple use the “Amount” slider to reduce the range and if that’s not enough, I’ll use the “Subtract” on the created mask and pick the Brush, works great on Milky Way photos!

    Great overview of object selection Mark and thank you as always. A thought about the iceberg, in particular, in this example, but it can apply to LR's object selection in general. The outer edge of the iceberg, where it touches the sky or water around it, ends up being a little too sharp/crunchy in terms of a transition, because the object selection is so precise; almost too precise. Especially when the subject is backlit or side-lit like this one, the light will naturally kind of "wrap around" the edge of the object, and that makes those sharp transitions at the edges a little strange. One way around it (literally) is to subtract with a high-feather brush at maybe 50% flow and just gently remove the sharp edge of the object mask so that there is a slightly more gradual transition between the edge of the object and the background.

    The best thing is combinations are not one trick ponies. Colour range might suit one picture, luminance another. Then a linear gradient placed in the right place can add shape - say on a windmill photographed on a day with flat light. It's only a couple of years ago the only shapes we had were radial and linear gradients!
