The new Jedi Survivor tie-in novel is Awful

Ойын-сауық

Jedi Battle Scars, the official prequel and tie in novel to Star Wars Jedi Battle Scars by Sam Maggs is really not good, which is disappointing. We'll talk about all that and more for today's Star Wars video.

THEY HAD MERRIN FALL FOR A RANDOM STORMTROOPER?!!?!?!?! They did Cal and Merrin so damn dirty. That said, I do love the idea of Cal slowly losing his sense of humanity and actually becoming filled with battle-lust over time. What happens to a man who represents an order dedicated to peace, forced to fight in a galaxy where even lowly gangs have hundreds of troops to throw at him? Would make an interesting storyline in my opinion.

And it all culminated with the worst of the Bay films, The Last Knight. It’s why the Bumblebee movie was changed into a soft reboot during its production, given how bad The Last Knight’s reception was. I was kinda just disappointed to see Merrin was shipped with someone else. I really liked her and Cal’s dynamic and it’s sad to see the interesting points of view for a Jedi and a Nightsister forming that kind of connection going to waste. Also, poor Merrin is totally ruined here. I liked her in the game. Not in this book.

I think the problem with a lot of contemporary writing really "feeling like fan-fiction" comes down to the fact that it feels like a photocopy of a photocopy. The experience the authors draw for inspiration entirely comes from pre-existing games, books, and movies. There's nothing wrong with inspiration - Mass Effect is one of my favorite franchises of all time, and it was very heavily inspired by Star Wars. Star Wars was inspired by Flash Gordon. But look at Mass Effect: Andromeda, for example. The writers were clearly trying SO HARD to make that feel like a classic ME game and give the audience the same relationship with the new characters as they had with the old ones. It came off as lacking in sobriety, overly campy, and really didn't take itself seriously at all. The author fails to manage their own expectations, and works backwards.

DUUUUUDE I have come to the exact same conclusion regarding a lot of media. My epiphany that resulted in this conclusion was in fact because of BioWare. Original BioWare devs grew up playing and reading the classics. Tabletop RPG’s, Berserk, Conan, D&D and Tolkien and likely other true classical literature. And when digital entertainment and gaming came to prominence, what they gave us was a direct fresh adaptation of the source. But now we have a generation of authors and devs that grew up on media that was inspired by media that was inspired by the true classics. A photocopy of a photocopy as you say. I have had this exact thought man, I’m just stoked to see it reflected elsewhere.

@@daveyjoneslocker4703 You make a good point about tabletops. I've never played D&D or Warhammer 40k or any other tabletops, personally, but considering that those are kind of created on the fly by the players, there's a higher demand for creativity. I think it goes beyond the media you consume, though. We all need to go outside more. Too many of us start our adult lives in a university and don't go very far beyond that. I hate to make a "these goddamn kids today" post (normally I'm ageist in the other direction) but it's hard not to draw that conclusion when games have teams of elite soldiers that act like members of a college club. My generation lived through 9/11, the Great Recession, and COVID. I know we're better than this.

I'm about a third of the way through this book and it is incredibly jarring to read. You'll go from really juvenile writing to steamy adult situations in 0 seconds flat. My girlfriend listened to a snippet of the Audible book and she thought I pulled the story from Wattpad. Another detail I noticed is the author was really fond of swearing every chance she got. It seemed like the characters would swear in their internal monologue once per paragraph. It read weird and it felt weird. The author also used some of our modern real world slang (eg a character had a "big brain moment") and it was super bizarre. Honestly I don't know if I can finish this book. Thankfully I got it for free using an Audible trial so I've lost nothing but time.

I thought about buying this book because I liked the characters so much, but then I read the reviews. The articles I read told me everything I needed to know: that it was fast paced, and drama drama drama drama drama drama. Some of it sounded like good drama, such as Cere still growing and resisting the dark side, but the fact that there was a love triangle was a turn off. I love Merrin, but they turned that subtle line from the game into a whole subplot is goofy. Edit: I agree with what you said about Cal. Imo, he shouldn't find killing fun. Sure there is satisfaction in overcoming a challenge, but Cal seems too Jedi like and kind to find killing fun. Also, what you said about Merrin's relationship perfectly sums up a larger problem in modern media. Writers must think because they are supposed to be in love, that is enough to make us care. We can only care about their relationship if we care about the individuals first, but they don't want to put in the work.

So at the risk of sounding like a total boomer, I'm pretty sure the only reason frett was added as a love interest for Merrin was to check off the LGBTQ box. I didn't necessarily ship Cal and Merrin either but the story did seem like it would go in that direction. I'm guessing that was the initial idea and it was later changed for the sake of representation (which does happen a lot in media these days). Hearing your thoughts on this after reading Shadow of the Sith makes me worried about future SW tie-in novels. Shadow of the Sith I found extremely boring and hard to finish, nothing about it really drew me in. The way it sounds, I'll probably skip this book as well. That doesn't mean I dislike all of the new cannon novels though, I enjoyed Brotherhood quite a bit.

Brotherhood really seems like a lame attempt to retread the ground Labyrinth of Evil already covered. I guess they thought Yerbana in the Clone Wars ruined chance of that happening. TCW might have as well made Cato Neimoidia mission into another Clone Wars arc instead of introducing a new planet.

I bought it thinking I was going to get a Cal Kestis based adventure. What I actually got was an inter-humanoid lesbian drama all about Merrin and this defected female stormtrooper fingerbanging each other every chance they get while poor Cal is left with major blue kybers. Typical bait and switch. Disney sucks.

I'm so glad that I'm not the only one, who thinks Jedi:Battle scars, could have been so much more. I also listen to the audiobook, on audible, and like you I kept comparing it to books, such as Lost Stars, Dark Disciple, and even Force Collector. (I also think Fret is the most annoying, boring, character ever. ) There are elements about Merrin, that I think could have been written better to, such as the source of her power. In the book it betrays Merrins power, as coming from her passions. But the way it's written, makes it sound, more like it specifically comes from her lust. (Which is a little grody to think about) and she just feels, out of character in general. I never thought of Merrin as having a flighty heart, but that's what this book betrays. Also, I love a good romance, but the kissing scenes, in this book, just last way too long, I just wound up fast-forwarding through them. All in all, this book feels very last minute, like lucasfilm just want to make a quick buck, on the Jedi: fallen order/Jedi: survivor, hype. P.s. I as well, thought that the best parts of this book, where the chapters that focused on in Greez, and Cere.

Ideally, you would want Jedi to kill as little faceless goons such as Stormtroopers as possible. I hate when you have Jedi talking about redemption and not falling to the dark side while a few scenes prior they were cutting down a hoard of faceless enemies. I know authors want to write Jedi using their lightsabers to kill a bunch of bad guys, but a race of warrior monks who supposedly only use violence as a last resort should be more discreet.

The typical rule I've learned with Disney Star Wars books is that they'll only introduce & use known characters if they have no future plans for that character going forward. That's what happened with Phasma with her book & comic series, & I believe that's what's happening with the 5th Brother here. He's a known quantity with an established story that won't likely be followed up on in TV or movies too much more. They don't want the books writing their TV & movie IPs into a corner. It's frustrating for sure, but Disney has a pattern on treating the books & novels as lesser. Especially within the established parts of the timeline.

You might have as well made a new inquisitor so we don't undercut tension. Kinda like the GAME did, Trilla is the best Inquisitor in Disney canon because they didn't reuse all goofy tropes from Rebels. Reva failed to recapture why Trilla worked because she has to share screentime with goofy Rebels Inquisitors. Filoni needs to be proud for how much he ruined any good villain potential for this organization without trying really hard. And someone still thinks he can actually worldbuild 😕

So, basically the novel summed up is, "Hey, guys, Merrin isn't one of those icky straughts! No, there will not be a romance realistically build up from its apparent foundation in JFO, it's male-female so its boring and not rEpReSaTiOn! She is horny for and jumps im bed with this random Imperial defector that we threw in here! What? What do you mean it takes away from the theme of the first game, all these strangers finding comfort and companionship in each other? Look at Fret! Look at the rEpReSeNtAtIoN! She's not a bland, boring, cliche SW character at all! The rEpReSeNtAtIoN!!! And just like "The High Republic", "Dr Aphra" and that "Rebels" novel, we are going to add in a bunch of gratuitous sex! Also the actual plot is inconsequential even with the injuries, Cal and Cere don't care about killing so many people because all those who support the Empire are bad bar fallen jedi! Everyone is out of character! Finally, captialism bad!"

That's why I still have hope for the game. Because not that many people are going to read the book, the book is probably not going to impact their character (i.e I doubt Merrin being in a forced lesbian relationship will be mentioned a lot in the game.... hopefully) that much besides maybe Greze which appears to be the only good thing in the book.

I was really expecting this novel to be good, and I was kinda disappointed about how the novel became more about Merrin and the stormtrooper girl Frethylrin ( and put aside the crew in sort way) . Also I is kinda sad Merrin and Cal were not together I am not saying they have to be a couple by force but I have to say their dynamic is pretty good, hopefully in the sequel they could have a thing. But I agree the best characters were Ceres and Greez, Cal was okay but I think we need it more about him, and Merrin would have been pretty good if her character was not all about her new love interest.

Love in a story should feel the same way it does in real life. You should feel sparks when two characters interact. It should be just as exciting as the action is. I think a lot of people felt that way about Cal and Merrin, and while I don’t think Merrin getting with a stormtrooper is actually a bad concept, it feels like robbery to put Merrin with a faceless undeveloped character when Cal and Merrin had sparks in and out of universe.
