The New Eruption in Iceland Could Become Very Destructive - Location, Maps and the Scenario

I'm sad to say that this eruption starts extremely strong and the magma flow is likely over 100 cub.m.pr. sec. and the fissure length is close to 4km. I don't think it's one single soul from Grindavík sleeping tonight while the town begs its fate and we can only hope for a good outcome since lava barriers hold for only so long, and this amount of lava is simply hard to deal with. We did however get good news shortly before 03:00 GMT from the Coast Guard helicopter that confirmed that lava is currently not on the way to town that has been evacuated since November 10th. We remain hopeful!
Update December 19th 11:00PM
I drove to Reykjavik after the the eruption started to do some filming on the Reykjanes Peninsula for the next update, December 20th. although the power of the eruption has decreased a lot today, not even rescuers are allowed to be in Grindvík because it is not considered unlikely that the fissure will erupt within the town since the land by Svartsendi has only dropped by 5cm, so scientists assume that er might just be seeing the first stage of the ongoing eruption.
More about this in my next update.

🇦🇺 The helicopter early footage was incredible. I also watched livestream drone taken at about 2.30 am Iceland time which was midday here!

Thank you! I waited for your video before watching anything other than the live cams and reading the RUV news reports. I also keep hope for Grindavik.

You might also appreciate this US geology professor's channel. He has been to Iceland several times, and is quite low key / anti-hype: kzread.info/dash/bejne/iaun2LOYZq7Lcto.htmlsi=REyS0W2kK-h0LW_K

We have been watching your amazing videos for several weeks now. You have a kind and thoughtful manner and voice. While most KZread channels try to sensationalize these situations, your calming and thoughtful and precise scientific tone is very much appreciated. And we have learned so much about Grindavik, and Iceland, and its people. Thanks, and we hope for the best outcome for the people there.

The other channel that my husband and I follow is Shawn Willsey, a geology professor in the US. He, too, is calm and no-hype, and explains the scientific side of things really well.

I heard about the eruption last night and you were the first commentator I looked for. Thank you for this update, it doesn’t look good but perhaps there is time to create barriers to protect the town. I hope this is the only eruption y’all have to deal with as well. Be safe and well and best regards from the city of Austin, Texas.
