Volcano Watch 2024: Four Eruptions In Four Months
A new eruption began on the Reykjanes peninsula March 16 at 20:23. A three km long fissure began erupting between Hagafell and Stóra Skógfell. The eruption was preceded by a brief period of seismic activity in the area.
Two lava flows originated from the fissure, one running westward to the north of the Blue Lagoon and Svartsengi Power Plant, and the other running southward toward Suðurstrandsvegur and the sea to the east of Grindavík. The lava flow overnight was around 1 km/hr. By the time of the Grapevine's visit on the afternoon of March 17, the lava had slowed to roughly 20 m/hr (apologies for saying 200 m/hr in the video).
Volcanic activity in the area continues to be fed by a magma reservoir beneath Svartsengi. Prior to this eruption, the reservoir was partially depleted by an event on March 2 that resulted in a dike intrusion, but no eruption.

The folks collecting the mountain of data for science and for public safety on the long term, must be busy these few years.
Seriously impressed with how fast and effective these Berms were made. Take care and best wishes to all living and working around Grindavik ❤ from Ireland 💚🤍🧡
You have the best videos, the best images but I miss Valur and Polly. If you see him, please tell him, we miss him very much. Thank you.

Here, here. This channel has not been the same since they left along with others. Valur always made reports interesting and had a zest to his personality. Polly, well, she was the queen of the broadcast. So, so sad. 😢
Back up to standard. Many thanks for showing us the 'berms' and the gap and lava flow etc. Excellent work :)
Art is the best camera guy for this kind of live walking video… always stunningly beautiful IF you notice it; but like the best shoes you usually don’t notice. Thank you Art. and thank you, Grapevine.
So cool to see the berms doing their job very well! And now I understand why I saw earlier footage today of scientists getting red lava samples to test chemical makeup. I understand the urgency of it from your narration - thank you! And, as always, Art's drone footage with the sound is magnificent!
Great update. I've been to Iceland four times and I feel concerned with each new eruption. Always hoping for the best outcome for people's homes and livelihoods and also the important infrastructure near the eruptions sites. Takk.

Ja byłam raz, podobało mi się i też się niepokoję. Byłam w tym parku tematycznym, gdzie łącza się płyty, rozumiem.
Excellent footage and information. From the shakey isles in New 🇳🇿 Zealand. I hope the berms continue to do their job and the people of Iceland keep safe.😊

Happy that Art is still able to make a living. Good work! Still miss the old days
Thanks, Katherine and Art. Seeing the height of the lava wall at ground level makes such a difference.
What a great video! Fantastic! Thank you!
My 4th grade students have been watching all of the eruptions. They will be thrilled to see your update tomorrow morning.
🌱🌏💚 KiaOra from New Zealand. Thank you for uploading. Take care & be safe Iceland 💖🇮🇸

Iceland: Kia ora, e hoa!
When lava meets the ocean it creates sulfer dioxide gas. We deal with that in Hawaii frequently.
Thank you for the excellent coverage from North Carolina, USA.
Great drone shot. Sounds powerful with headphones on.
Excellent coverage. Thank you from Canada.
What an amazing time for volcanology in Iceland!
I hope Polly is ok

I hope Julie made it through 😂😂😂
That looks like a classic dying a'a-flow front. It takes a lot of force to move a flow that big. The main Mauna Loa flow front was between 45' and 65' as it was dying out.
My mom when returning to Iceland was like "hi, we are just landed, we are fine, volcano erupted nearby again, i'm so sleepy..." And i thought ive got an entertaining life lol
Amazing. I didn’t realize the lava was so thick. Must be about 10 meters tall.

How about the heat ripples in the air above the flow ? Anybody know the temperature of red hot magma? Bright orange 1100C. Red 700C.
@markuschampos5750

When erupted the lava is 15- 1600 °C. Iron is about 1100 °C when red hot.
Excellent reporting..thankyou for the update. Australia
Beautiful! I pray no one gets hurt, nor settlements destroyed.
Excellent coverage. Good to see you getting a chance to get right up and close!
Awesome to be able to see this flow right up close! Thanks so much for update today. Hope it stalls before hitting water. Be safe all over in Iceland ,
Thank you for your great coverage.
Wow! Amazing! That defensive wall was well placed!
Incredible footage so close to advancing lava flow. Thank you for this.
Wow! Loved the close up perspective! Had no idea the lava was that deep/tall. Cool shot of the lava slowly tumbling down.
Well done briefing.... Great drone footage. Thanks
Thank you. To everyone bringing this to our world to see. 😊
More amazing drone work by Art Bicnick! Thanks!!
great coverage, be safe out there. watching from Georgia, USA
Thanks!
Quite the lava flow!😮
Thanks for updating us Katherine. 👍
Great coverage! Our thoughts are with you- from Washington State, USA.
Just throw the dang ring in already!
We visited Iceland in January this year, when one of the earlier eruptions was going on. The Icelandic people are amazing---just like their Icelandic horses---tough, resilient. Your ability to cope, no matter what, and be as friendly and welcoming as you are, is laudable. Love Iceland and her people. (And the hot chocolate!!) Stay safe!
I miss Valur and Polly
A very good report that satisfied my curiosity (for now) :)
That looks like 5 meter of lava. And that wall needs to be heightened before the next eruption occurs.
@Blackadder75

A next time the flow will find another path, 5 meters below the current one... only when all nearby low spots are filled it will go on top of the previous one
Please be safe while bringing us this news. Much LOVE from the East Coast USA. 💞💞💞
Excellent videography Art. AAs always you're so talented. Thank you and Katherine.
Be safe out there
Thank you for showing this wonderful vulcano
The height of that lava flow is much more than the 2021 one as seen at 6minutes in.
No magma there. It's LAVA! :)
Quite the wall of lava!
What a view of this eruption!
Great work, thank you for presenting this and for doing an amazing job with the cameras, documenting this big eruption. We can't be there but we're enjoying it remotely thanks to your reporting.
Great footage and excellent explanation. Stay safe Iceland!
Thank you for including the sounds of the lava!
Beautiful footage, thank you. It's wild to see the mass slowly creeping towards the sea.
Where's Polly?
Hi from Oregon, USA. Keep safe, love and light.

I guess that that lave river wall- is about 8-10 meters high -amazing!
Amazing. thank you! hope you're ok. wishing to come see it from the uk
Thanks x
Fascinating. Thank you.
Thank you for the stunning images and a very clear explanation of the situation in Iceland. As a country you seem to be coping well with a life changing event. Keep safe
Thanks for the on the scene report. I appreciate it very much.
Excellent report
5:06 Wow, great image of a lava berm working as planned!
Great vision that I haven't seen on the usual live cams, TY for that, and it's also good to be able to comment here.
3:54 if lava reaches seawater, potential hydrochloric acid gas
Beautiful to watch! Stay safe ! From South Wales uk xxx
Thank you so much for the update. God bless
Great to see the Grapevine is back on the case for levelheaded accurate reporting….. unlike another sensationlist vlogger…..thank you
Just back from Iceland. Our Northern lights tour was cancelled 3 times but we got footage of the eruption from the top floor of our hotel and when we took off on our flight home.
Thank you for the update and footage 😊
The wall works. WOW
Farm, if it survives, will make a popular Airbnb rental site! Just imagine being able to walk across the road to the new lava field.
Love and prayers from Western Massachusetts. ❤
Living on a stable ground, as I do, it is mind boggling to think that your local landscape can change overnight. Iceland is an extra ordinary island. I bet you have lovely warm feet!
Is the magma coming close to the top of the barriers? Much concern for the people of Grindavik and the entire peninsula.
@TheReykjavikGrapevine

It's being redirected nicely by the berms, so (at least right now) it's travelling slowly alongside the walls rather than building up to crawl over them and into Grindavík.
It is interesting how the Icelanders have become experts in predicting and manipulating lava flows over the last few years. Makes me wonder how they deal with this in a few decades.
@milodemoray

It is not over the "last few years." It has been going on for decades. Historical data shows that the Islanders have had to deal with this for centuries. It is effectively only now that satellite and other measuring devices bring even more data which helps them predict eruptions. And the movement of land rise and other things.
Thank out for your great reporting and photography.
Oh I wanna hear more of the crumbling noises as it creeps forward!
Thank you for this video.
Thank you for showing such courage & pose reporting from the Icelandic population since the 1st eruption. Showing grace under unpredictable conditions. Lava traveling 200 meters per hour still appears to be fast vs. 1 kilometer per hour. Godspeed in your Endeavors.
Be Safe ! Thanks for the great video!
Thank you for explaining so clearly. Wish I was there to feel mother earth's power. ❤
Thanks, love the names of the towns!!
always beautiful video work by Art. Looks like that berm is doing its job.
Sending safe & love from Syracuse NY...I am hoping that everyone is gonna be safe...✌❤🌎🇺🇸
Stunning drone footage - as always 👏 to Art! He's the last obe from the original team and I hooe very much he will keep going. Grateful that he's there providing us with his photographic art. Would have liked assessments by Ragga from the Lava Show - and above all - Prof. Thordarson (hope I'm getting his name right)
Glad the berms are working. Will be interesting to see what happens with subsequent flows.
Great video. I live in California where we get earthquakes but our biggest volcano, Mt. Shasta, hasn't erupted in a very long time. If it ever does, watch out!
Very fine reporting; thank you.
Great job thank you!
Incredible to see how high the lava is against the berm.
Good presentation 👍Thank You
thank u for the news, plz be safe = prayers for all of u up at that lava flow
you said 200m / hour and 2 minutes later 20 meters / hour, a bit confusing. I guess 20, as the stuff barely moved when the 3 people went for a peek.
@Justin_Leone

She said 20 at first, then said 200, then said (I think) 200 again but they corrected the video later by dubbing in "20". So I'm pretty sure it's supposed to be 20.
Thank you for your knowledge
It's impressively - scarily - high when you see the lava flow up close like this...
Thank you !
