The New Best Mechanical Dive Watch Under $300 - Orient Kamasu Review

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The best affordable mechanical dive watch, a title that has been thrown around quite a bit in the world of watches and even on my channel before, but this Orient Kamasu recently has jumped up to make a very strong claim to be the latest owner of that title and to not give it up for quite some time.

His review of the Kamasu was one of several that convinced me to get one of these gems. I purchased my red Kamasu direct from Orient as I could not find a retailer with a red model in stock. Orient offered a year end (xmas) 15% discount so my out the door price was $261 (Dec. 2020). This watch has amazing style, fit and finish, accuracy is superb. After six days, my particular watch is steady at 15 secs fast or +2.5sec/day. My Rolex Air King runs -2sec/day (the Rolex's time can be controlled by positioning the crown down to slow or flat to speed up. In my first 6 years of ownership (I've had it 23 years), my Air King was never off by more than 2 seconds, not sec/day but seconds from true time). The Kamasu band is a robust 22mm, feels great and fits snuggly when the links are removed and micro-adjustment is set for my wrist. Highly recommended.

Thanks Teddy for the continous straight-forward awesome content! You stepped up your videography A LOT during the last months. Your shots are simply amazing! You're also the only watch channel where I don't skip the intro as you actually wear the watch you present afterwards - really appreciate the effort here! Orient is a great brand. I owned both the Blue Ray I & II and just loved them. I agree that THIS is probably the best diver you can get around 200 bucks. I just stepped up to a Triton a few weeks ago and just love it as well! I do agree with your critics according the crown guards. But I think they can get away with it as they actually really guard the crown and weren't put there just for design purposes. All the best from Germany!

Great video, Teddy. 100% agree with the assessment of Orient. I’ve had a Mako2 for a number of years and continue as my weekend and travel watch. Upgrading to the Kamasu, if only for the sapphire crystal is money well spent. Some viewers may see the bezel and the dial on the blue model reflect color differently and opt for the black, which is not a bad choice, but Orient executes their blue dials nicely.

I’ve never liked diver watches, mostly because of their way too thick bezel and the ugly circular hour-marks. This orient diver is actually one of the prettiest dive watches I’ve ever seen, so that’s for sure gonna go on my wishlist. And yes, I’ve seen rolexes, omega seamasters and tudors. This one looks better in my eyes. Maybe not the finishing and quality, but the design is better

I bought it from amazon about 3 weeks before this video was submitted and I have to agree with all you have listed as pros and cons. I've had a Seiko SNZH at that time in my collection too, which I used for a few months. I sold the Seiko to my cousin but exchanged the bracelets before I did that so he got a watch with a new bracelet and I ended up with the one from SNZH which, in my opinion, is a nicer looking bracelet. It's not all brushed but has got polished bits on each link too. I think it just suits the watch better than the original one. I kept the original clasp, of course, so there's no ORIENT-watch - SEIKO-clasp nonsense going on.

*I’m so excited!* Just bought this in blue for my first watch in 20 years! I needed a decent timepiece for work that has decent lume that is readable for at least 3/hrs past sunset. It was either this or a Invicta/Pagani… I don’t know much about watches so I hope I made the right choice. Lume is the most important thing I needed in the end.

M F I have nothing but respect for the watch. It’s just how common of a watch that it’s become. The style is simple but doesn’t really look that expensive to me, I know that sounds stupid. But if I’m going to pay 300+ for a watch I want it looking great aesthetically. That said there’s plenty of 21 year olds who love it.

Orient Kamasu in maroon was my first automatic watch that I bought (had manual winding Helvetia and Darwil, but those are vintage). I just love how the red turns into black during night time. Never believed that a red dial watch could be so versitile and easy to match with different style clothing. When new, it ran around +15 secs a day, after frequent wearing, it's around +5 which is awsome. And that sapphire is a lifesaver. Only thing that scratches easly is the braclet and the polished sides of the case. But I don't care, for 200 euros was a steal.

Love my blue Orient Ray 2 - I've swum in it, kayaked and camped in it and generally done everything in it for almost two years and it still looks like new. I do like the Kamasu a lot and have thought about trading, but the dial just doesn't do it for me in the way the blue sun burst on the Ray does. I'd like the sapphire crystal, that said I haven't damaged the mineral in the Ray yet and if I do I'll just pop and after market sapphire in. I have to say, I think the Ray's metal bracelet was also superior to the Kamasu's. All that said, I think It really is tough to fault any Orient's divers at this price range, especially for an 'everyday, everything, anywhere' watch.

I was little sceptical while I was ordering my Scarlet Kamasu as I have 7.5 inch wrist and thought that how bad would it be. I own Seikos which are 37 and 38 mm and thought 41.8mm would be bigger for my wrist. However, I went ahead and I do not regret it at all. I love the watch to its core. It's a stunner in Scarlet and it plays beautifully in different lighting conditions.

I did not notice any blemishes at all or bad finishing on the indices on my Ray II, and not a single speck of dust under the glass either, but i am anxious to see when my Mako III/Kamasu arrives if it has the same blemishes/finishing issues as the one on this video. Anyway im glad you did not try to hide or forget to mention it, because especially the 9 oclock indice has a noticeable point which catches the light and seems visible to the naked eye outside of the macro shots. Great video and review Teddy.

Hey Teddy, love your videos! I think it would be really great if you made videos on "watch companies and the watches that built their success" or like a video on the history of important watch brands. I'm also trying to find a nice watch from the year that I was born (1998) and I imagine a lot of people would enjoy a video where you discuss a nice watch that was released each year! Thanks for all your great videos, they've really influenced me and my interest in horology!

A superb review Teddy. I LOVE this watch, liked it as soon as I saw it however with several other divers, I was a little hesitant. Then stumbled on a return on Amazon for a steal. Watch arrived perfect like new and I wear this a lot more than my Oris or Omega, just fits great and looks great. I would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone. It’s really all the watch you will ever need... erm did I really just say that? 😳🤭

I've got the black-gray Kamasu II two weeks ago and absolutely love it. It's an excellent watch with robustness and originality, specially if you get it under $200. It fits perfectly in small wrists (mine's about 6,25"), so size isn't a concern. Definitely aiming now for the blue Kamasu of the first generation showed in the video.

Great review. I have just begun my watch journey, and to date do not own any Orient watches. I hope to begin with this one. Currently with what is going on, some people may disagree, but even something as simple or even trivial as buying a watch may lend to a sense of normalcy in the midst of all this craziness. We will get through this. Thanks for staying the course. Thanks for postin! Stay safe sir!

I have the Orient Kamasu with the maroon dial/black bezel. I really like it. My two issues are the tiny crown and my watch came with a bracelet that was scuffed in three places. Strapcode is now offering bracelets for this watch.

I fully agree that this is a nice watch and looks fine for the price. I just got one. Now for those of you who are thinking of getting one, remember this, this has a screw down crown. While it is a good thing, the crown is small and fiddly and if you dont wear this often, u may need a watch winder. Otherwise, screwing and unscrewing the crown don't give me the confidence that it will last with repeated mechanical intervention. Of course I fear my screwing and unscrewing will mess up the seals and make it unsuitable as a diver watch which defeats its purpose! So again, wear this often otherwise buy it just for home display. You dont want to be messing with the tiny screw down crown too often.

Superb watch (not only) for that price! I had to get one right after it came out. I used to have the Mako I in blue, so I wanted something different, went for the black, but it just wasn't the green one, so I sold the black and got the green. IMHO, the best color version of this watch!

Great review and won't argue with the praise for the Orient Kamasu. I was looking extensively for a daily diver to spare my higher end swiss divers and just couldn't pay the asking price for any of Seiko's sub $600 offerings. They all felt like they should be half the price, no saphire crystals, basic movements, dull dials no milled clasps. Frankly I think for a massive company with their resources they should just sapphire crystal an ceramic bezel current turtles and samuri's and keep the msrp where it is.. I almost ordered a green dial Kamasu and just decided to take a chance on the Triton. It worked out to be under $100 more and had the upgraded pvement and anti reflective coating and japanease diver certification. I am beyond taken by the watch, the design, the bezel movement, lume, finish everything but the clasp and divers extension are unbeleiveble for the price. Many dump on the bracelet yes its not perfect but its quiet, impecable finished and assembled for the price. Would I pay $50 more for a milled clasp? Yes I would and Orient should update this considering its their top diver in the sub orient star line.

When I first saw orient watches the first one I came across was the Orient ray. I was already a big fan of dive watches. I have many Seikos and a few micro brands. I didn’t think much of the Bambino when I saw it either. I got a chance to buy the Kamasu and from the minute i got it on wrist I was in love. As much as I love my skx it’s been my Kamasu on wrist since then. I have bought the Bambino as well and now when I go out that’s on my wrist the beautiful cream colored dial with the blue hands I don’t remember the reference number but that isn’t the point. The pint is that Orient makes amazing watches and the price makes them watches that you can’t afford NOT to own!

It definitely is a lot of watch for the money. I've been wearing a red dial Kamasu for three years now. My only complaint is that because the bezel insert sits slightly higher than the crystal and it's made of aluminium, it picks up a lot of scratches. In fact I've decided to replace the bezel to be able to insert a ceramic one. That being said, I still absolutely love this watch, I feared the red dial would be a bit shouty but it is not, it actually is kind of subdued, more maroon or even blackish in most lighting conditions. It's really beautiful. I don't like metal bands so I got several Nato's, a Hirsch vulcanised natural Rubber, and a black leather strap for it. It looks good on all of them. A watch you can dress for many occasions.

I looked at the Kano but I think this is the winner. Scratch resistance is more important than impact for me so the sapphire pulls ahead. I think they are both nice looking watches imo.
