The New Adventures of Nero Wolfe. Starting on October 20, 1950 it lasted only until April 27, 1951. It starred Sidney Greenstreet as Nero Wolfe. The part of Archie was played by Lawrence Dobkin for the first twelve shows. Gerald Mohr took over for the next four shows after making a guest appearance in the twelfth show. Harry Bartell was Archie for the remainder of the series.
Nero Wolfe, also known as the galloping gourmet, was an armchair detective. He rarely left the house; instead his assistant, Archie Goodwin, would collect the facts and report back. Nero Wolfe would probably not have taken on many cases had he not needed the clients' money to pay for his two true passions: fine food and the collecting of orchids. Archie Goodwin, Wolfe's male secretary, prodded him into taking cases whenever the bank balance got a little low. Wolfe, as a character, is difficult to like. He's a self-assured type that does nothing unless he wants to, making his assistant, Archie Goodwin, deal with the outside world.

I really enjoy these Nero Wolf yarns, they reassure me that there was a time when we could write a mystery story of actual detection, instead of just a litany of beating up suspects until one cracks.
Sidney Greenstreet was so good an actor, just saw him in Casablanca, these long ago actors simply the best.
Love the books featuring Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin. Thanks for sharing.

The show is what it is, entertaing at its best. The script, actors sets the scene. The rest is in the persons head. Great
So neat. I also liked Timothy Hutton and Maury Chaykin in the later versions of Wolfe. Thanks again as I watch it again.

Oooh! _MUCH_ "naughtier" than any of Stout's written tales - I _LIKED IT!_ Nice story, & I'm glad I've hit on these recordings of the Nero Wolfe radio shows. Some people are just fabulously gifted, aren't they?!
i happen to like Nero Wolfe and Archie knows just how to handle him and likes him, too. He doesn't take him seriously, except for his detecting. . . on the other hand, the police inspector doesn't get him at all :}

Reading the high praises of audio and video versions in the postings below. Does anybody get inspired to read the books by Rex Stout? TV and Radio versions are very inferior to the original written word. I love the fact that, in your picture, you made Wolfe's shirt canary yellow. (For those who don't get it -- read the books!)
The final episode of the series. Without sponsors, NBC just couldn't afford to keep "NERO WOLFE" going. So they cut their losses after 26 weeks, and replaced it with Brian Donlevy's "DANGEROUS ASSIGNMENT" in May, then "NBC PRESENTS SHORT STORY" in June, followed by Herbert Marshall's "THE MAN CALLED X" in July.....and the final episodes of "SCREEN DIRECTORS PLAYHOUSE" that September.
Sidney Greenstreet was hired because of his wonderful voice. Perfect for radio. However, he doesn't portray Nero Wolfe as written by Rex Stout. His Nero was gruff, magisterial and not a little bit pompous. It would have been uncharacteristic for him to laugh. Sneer possibly, but he was seldom cheerful. Oh well...kudos to the late Mr. Greenstreet. RIP
i love these old radio programs, but they do tend to use the same formulas over and over. this one always has a phone call and the person calling gets cut off. . . LOL
At about 10:35 "The danger of the female species" is reference to the Kipling Poem: The Female of the Species. ...For the female of the species is more deadly than the male...
Why my two favorite shows have so few programs, my number one, Nero Wolf and second Richard Diamond, if someone knows why, I'll appreciate the information

A little disappointed with this one: Archie seemed a little dim witted, Cramer was way too passive, and Wolf too sarcastic and consequently annoying.
Sorry, this Nero is not Nero Wolfe, nor is the Archie Archie. Poor writing too.
