THE NEGATIVE SIDE EFFECTS OF GASTRIC BYPASS SURGERY | What I wish I'd known

Ойын-сауық

Hi Friends!
Today I am going to share with you the negative side effects that I've experienced after undergoing gastric bypass surgery. If you are considering this procedure, I encourage you to speak with your surgeon about the possible risks and side effects so that you can make a fully informed decision about whether this is the right option for you.

I was sleeved May 25th. WOW 😮 My new lifestyle is one for the books and I’m loving it. I was able to rest at home for 7 days before having to return to work as summer school principal. Thankfully I work with some awesome teachers who helped me so I didn’t have to do a lot of extra moving. It took me a full 2+ weeks to start to feel like myself. Walking helped me a lot! In regards to eating, I struggle with eating slowly and NOT drinking water while I eat. I use the mornings to get in my water. I am in the gym at least 4 days each week. On the weekends, I walk outside on a nature trail for 3 miles. Fresh air and vitamin D. I’m down 26 pounds… GO ME!

I am genuinely curios: Why did you get the surgery? In order to lose weight, you just need to eat less, right? All the surgery does is making you feel full faster. Couldnt the same be achieved with less calorically dense foods?

This year it’s been 4 year after my gastric bypass. I've never regretted it, I lost 45 kg and I'm now weighting 65 kg (I've gain 6 kg since my lowest weight at 6 months after surgery, but I didn't really felt comfortable at that weight really) but most importantly I don't have high blood pressure, diabetes or thyroid problems anymore. Having said this, long term side effects are a real thing, the greatest thing for me is dumping syndrome: while I feel its more extreme symptoms (rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath and dizziness in my case) shortly after eating rich and/or very sweet foods (I've said goodbye to ice-cream, pastries, cakes and really greasy foods) I feel bloated (farts warning!) and uncomfortable and reaaaally inclined to lay down almost after every meal. About vomiting: It's been my experience that I’m unable to, if you think about normal vomiting. There is simply no food in my "stomach" no bring up but if I overdo it badly in the rich/sweet food department I might spend a full hour or two dry heaving and bring up foam or a bit of liquid. A truly painful experience, 10 out of 10 do not recommend. (this has happened to me maybe 3 or 4 times in the last 4 years so it’s not common at all... you learn fast what to avoid, believe me). Another important thing to keep in mind if you've had a gastric bypass: please, TAKE YOU VITAMINS! I made the huge mistake of stopping taking my vitamins (because they upset my stomach) for like half a year, a year after surgery. DO NOT DO IT! I had huge problem with my iron but most importantly with my B12 levels that have caused what might very well be permanent nerve damage resulting in trigeminal neuralgia and loss of feeling on my left arm. Again, I still do not regret my surgery, but I might feel a bit frustrated about not feeling 100% any time I eat anything.

I’m having the surgery in 2 weeks, not looking forward to the struggle but I know it’ll be worth it. I’m concerned for people like me though, because from the comments it sounds like a lot of us aren’t being fully prepared beforehand. I was required to go to classes and meetings with a nutritionist and even a psychologist before surgery, so they taught us all this stuff but sounds like that’s not the case for a lot of people. They need to be telling everyone what to expect and what to do. Best wishes to all of you 🥰

Good post, thank you. The sleeve is now the most popular procedure BUT it, too, has problems and possible complications. I must mention here Kelly Osbourne, who, last year, stunned everyone with photographs of herself super slim even her cheeks (she had buccal cheek fat removal, which many surgeons won't do as it can be dangerous to facial nerves and muscles). I looked at her pic and said quietly, Gastric Sleeve. Then I read what she said - that it was wonderful blah blah and that she wished she'd done it sooner. Best thing ever. I said, Kelly, check back in six months or a year, and let's see how you're doing. Recently she was pictured 25-30lb overweight yet again, head to toe in black sweats. She's also drinking alcohol as well as eating. I feel sorry for her because honestly this is not a rare occurrence after WLS. She is now being 'fat shamed', which is terrible. Her mother Sharon Osbourne had a gastric bypass years ago but she too regained weight. SO, she 'upgraded' to an additional sleeve. My personal feeling is that WLS is NOT the answer xx

But yes, different challenges will emerge and I think it’s a positive that the surgery makes us deal with those head on. It’s why we did it, right? So that we wouldn’t fall back to food. I am 60 lbs down already, and while I miss my popcorn and ice cream, and my normal farts, I don’t miss the old lifestyle. I had gastric bypass 10 years ago and i’m so happy that I was able to have it. Although it didn’t keep the all weight off permanently, ( my weight fluctuates ) it was definitely a great jumpstart! I changed the way that I looked at food at changed my eating habits, walked a whole lot more and stayed away from stressful situations ( yes, stress by itself causes weight gain for many ) I still take my vitamins, I actually cook with protein powder ( low carb pizza crust etc...) I have lost over 100 lbs, was 266 at my highest weight because I was a high risk person with 2 or more underlying issues I was still able to get the surgery with a lower BMI. I had several side affects like nausea and the gas for instance, the first couple of years, but it eventually faded. Good luck everyone and get some charcoal undies for the farts lol...Good luck!

Folks will say the negative effects were more based on their lack of education/knowing what they were getting into. Your content was what I want! I'm starting the process this surgery but am not good at accepting the lifelong commitment this is. Your video has helped me get there.

Tip: blue Dawn dish soap used as a pretreat for clothes for stains caused by those “accidents”. Buy clothes like dresses or stretch garments that fit over many sizes. Sure helps extend the wardrobe. Buy only one or two fitted garments in each side instead of an entire wardrobe and check out clothing exchanges like those on gastric websites or Facebook. You aren’t the only one flipping through sizes. Ginger capsules really help with the nausea. Remember herbs take 7-10 days to build to the full effect in your system.
