Hi, Chilean guy here. I was a kid when the atrocities in Colonia dignidad "were discovered" (many people knew what was happening but it was not reported in the media). One thing that was not mentioned in the video is that the colony had an impressive pastry operation. They basically used slave labor (the colonists under Shaffer rule) in order to sell german-style organic non-industrial cakes in almost every supermarket in the country. Well, I remember that when media reports about what really happened started coming in, everyone was like "wtf! The people from the Colonia dignidad cakes are a pedophile Nazi cult??!!". Just to put into perspective, for an American audience this is like, I don't know, suddenly realizing that the organic food brand Amy's kitchen was controlled by pedophile Nazis who had slaves, a shitload of weapons (including chemical weapons), and a secretive compound that was used by the US government as a second Guantanamo. Wild shit.

I remember the summer of 97 or 98, being in a family vacation down in the South - as we call it here in Santiago - and how my cousins and I used to scare each other saying “don’t you know Paul Schafer is missing? He’s going to come and get you in the middle of the night!”. He was a Boogeyman of sorts. We knew he had done something ‘bad’ to kids but obviously the adults didn’t told us the details. Years later I, and many other Chileans, came to understand the extent of the atrocities that happened in Colonia Dignidad. Thanks for shining a light on it, the episode is superb as always. PS: I wanted to add that the ex colony, now Villa Baviera, is truly doing good, and they have a line of very good cheeses and charcuterie that is sold country-wide. Very hard working people.

The problem wasn't even communism necessarily, it's just that structure attracts corrupt totalitarianists. Similar to absolute monarchies, it can hypothetically work, just not realistically on wide-scale basis. You can have very happy small communes though, although communism as a government type is just unsafe. Sad it's got so much instant fear by the west without understanding the difference between people who were communist and the actual idea of it.

There was a great Netflix movie on an American hippie couple who got imprisoned in Paul Schäfer’s compound after the Pinochet regime arrested the man and handed him over to Schafer. Then his girlfriend joined the cult to try and rescue him - which she did eventually. Extremely inspiring. Does anyone know the name of that film? Anyway, great documentary! Thanks!❤️👍🏼

This also moved me. I hope I get a chance to do something along the same lines if I am able to find help before it is too late. . . . . . . . . The thing to think about here is that this person was able to camouflage his sadistic practices by using institutions which were generally regarded as virtuous to attract victims and obfuscate evidences which might create suspicion. The way he did this was so well practiced it seems almost instinctive. Do we as people in general really know how to recognize these kinds of individuals and the institutions which may shelter them? You can sure bet a good many of those who survived this monstrosity can pick them out of a crowd at one glance but know still that there is usually nothing that can be done. These power crazed types play chess with reality. They know the lay of the board and the pieces better than most, since to a very large degree they were there designing the game and its rules from long long ago.

Billy Graham wasn't a healing evangelist. He became popular at the same time, but had different views and methods. The healing revivals petered out after a few years with few lasting institutions, but I am vaguely familiar with Jim Jones's genesis in that movement. I am not familiar with Paul Schafer's religious beliefs, but I doubt they bear much similarity to mainstream Baptists like Graham, who worked ecumenically. Modern Western religious history is a very complex subject, so I can understand the lack of familiarity, but the reference to him in this video could be seen as an inaccurate dig (which I assume was not the content creator's intention). It would be very unlikely for the Queen of England to associate with a healing evangelist, as she did with Graham. Otherwise, it's another thought provoking video. [Edited for grammar and style]

@@ironman10181 It makes sense if you're talking about the branches that stemmed from the post-war schism of Christianity, which is what I had intended to do. Both Jones and Graham started on the same stages, with similar followers. They branched away from each other early, and ended up in drastically different places. But they are both undeniably indicative of the schism. I would have saved infinite heartache if I'd said Oral Roberts as I'd originally intended, but hindsight is 20/20.

Adrienne Clarke Thanks! I just read about Dr. Hubertus Strughold found from a Nat Geo article by searching NASA Nazi’s. I’d heard before that America and Russia used some of the Nazi’s rocket scientists post war; but using actual war criminals; those that committed or took part in the worst of the atrocities from that period is pretty gut wrenching stuff. For them to actually be celebrated as heroes in any shape or form is a hard pill to swallow. I’d love Rare Earth to cover this subject some more.

Adrienne Clarke Not really. This history of what seems to have happened to a lot of these Nazi’s post war contradicts the official narrative of what the war was, and why it was fought. My grandparents and their generation would have been up in arms if this was widely known in the decades after the war. No wonder they tried to cover it up; but it doesn’t make it any less shocking or disgusting. Let alone we are all now profiting from and so reliant on technologies, medicines etc that often have there roots in scientific breakthroughs credited to monsters and tyrants; or that in some instances these technologies wouldn’t have existed without such horrible experiments. Changes the context of history quite a bit. You’re dead right though. Watching KZread vids and then reading up on new information is pretty awesome 😁

We would probably write this entire video off as a revisionary leftist conspiracy meant to discredit the "virtues" of a "god-fearing, conservative, white nation" How I cringe at the thought of that many having as large an audience of rabid wolves as he does, ready to strike on his command.

Yeah, definitely not non-bias, but told in a way that really doesn't aim antagonize. Mostly factual statements told with a personal touch. But who cares? It's engaing, interesting, sometimes horrific stories that I would've loved to be told in hostory classes as a kid.

Thank you for sharing. I have experienced and seen some of the most brutal things you cannot even begin to fathom. But it’s like no one’s believes it because it’s so terrible. How can I even be alive to speak of it? No one’s deserves a life like this and those who create this reality need to be taken care of. ASAP

If you research it schefer was a medic in the wermacht. The Mengele reference seems pretty over the top. tons of people escaped west Germany by any means necessary. It would be enough to hate communism if you experienced it first hand. Socialism is just barely right of communism. I actually think the world would be better had we spared Americans and let Japan and Germany defeat the bolsheviks.

Thank you so much for this. I remember as a child how my parents would watch the news horrified, not wanting to tell me what terrible things were happening. As an adult now, I can't explain myself how is this absolutely forgotten for most of chileans in the present. We are in huge debt to our kids. Right now it's in great debate on how the church has systematically abused their children and, some years ago, the SENAME case, where more than 1300 poor kids who lived in houses run by the governement died by medical neglicence, was in public discussion. Unfortunately, history seems to repeat itself over and over again. With this videos, I truly believe you are doing a good thing to our planet. Keep on!

Amazing video! I am glad to have found your channel, you are doing great work! However I have a nitpick: If you go to for example 2:06 you see the video quivering a little. This is because 30fps is not enough for such ambient, slow landscape shots. You could solve this by either recording in 60fps or having the camera move a little faster in such shots.

You are a master storyteller. Thank you for sharing your time and talent with us.

Loved the video. Btw, If you ever do come to South Korea, may I suggest looking into the many religious cults we have here. I think you'll find them interesting and horrifyingly absurd.

All I know about are the Moonies, though I'm not sure if they count as a cult

Being born into a torturing, abusive cult family is among the absolutely worst things I can imagine possible for a human being. I cannot fathom the suffering these people go through. I saw a documentary about a woman in Germany who had this happen to her. She said the cult members, including her own parents, sedated her, tortured her, and raped her all through her childhood and adolescence. They fucking made her kill her own baby which was a result of rape!!! And the worst thing (if that's even possible) is that if she told people what happened to her at home (which was extremely dangerous!!!), people could not believe it and would not take her serious. From all the trauma, she eventually split her personality and developed mentally illness, which is the reason why later when she wanted to go to court, her testimony wouldn't be taken as evidence (again!) and even now, there are people saying she made it up because she is mentally ill.... If this isn't hell, then I don't know what is.

It’s hell but it’s not the real hell. Hell in next life, is forever. I’m so sorry about what happened to that lady. She deserves better. And those idiots should’ve believed her. I hate it when people tell the truth and no one believes them.

Wow. I had heard about this place several different times in the past but could never get any real info. You would hear things like it was a haven for escaped Nazis but you just couldn't get much more info than that. Back in the late 70's/early 80's ish I heard it was like it's own little Nazi country. I was shocked and amazed a place like that could exist. It was great to get a real, accurate review of the place. We finally know what was really going on there. I am glad it's gone now & the people that were born there or had no control over living there are now free.

Thank you for that video, this seems like piece of recent history I need to know. Also those buildings in the colony look exactly like what you see in germany. That alone makes the colony seem eerie.

webfraek12, There is a lot of German in influence the further south of Chile you go. Just be careful not to group them all with Nazis because many Germans immigrated to Chile even before Germany was a unified state, only Villa Baviera has Nazi origins (as far as I know). Most germans came during the earlier years of the Chilean Republic, who wanted immigrants to occupy the southern territories of Chile and also to get rid of the native peoples. In a way it is very similar to what the USA did in their occupation of the "Wild" West and many other young American nations did. The USA also benefited with the European immigration. But just like in the USA, this came to a shameful and bloody cost for the native peoples of Chile.

I've watched and liked. This was very well done and compassionately told. Subscribed!

I love your work and just want to comment about the sound editing... there are a lot of really unique and cool things going on but some of those higher frequency swells are really a bit much... I feel the effect and get it but it distracts from the dialog and actually hurt my ears coming through my MacBook... Just a friendly critique and encouraging technical note from an audio-dork... +Vémundr It's the dark underbelly (by only a few shades really) of 4chan filled with edgy teenagers who say edgy things (mostly involving hitler), then backpedal any time there are potential repercussions, claiming it "was just a joak geez guise hurr durr muh polliticul kurektness" (you _know_ it's a good joke when you have to explain that it's a joke, also poe's law doesn't exist). It's for the most part where the alt-reich came from. When Agent Orange announced he was running for president, literally nobody but the farthest fringes of society (and not all of them even) believed it was going to go anywhere--look at any news sources where opinions are allowed (the daily show, the late show w/ stephen colbert) and what they said at the time--none of them took him seriously. 4chan loves an outcast/underdog persona (since they view themselves that way), so them supporting him was pretty much a given. Almost certainly some of them did it as a joke, but if your actions and the results they cause are ultimately the same no one cares why you did it (important life lesson for `edgelords` right there). Pedophilla is something of a problem on 4chan, and that's a bit of an understatement--clashes with the FBI aren't usually a good sign, especially when they're a recurring thing. It _is_ against the site's rules, but the mods just don't care--and even if they did, there aren't nearly enough of them to manage the level of traffic the site gets (social sites in the global top 1000 tend to get into legal trouble from the stuff their users do if no dedicated mod team is in place, and 4chan's in the top _500_ ). Any time I see Trump diehards using pedophilla as a go-to boogeyman for stuff and people they don't like ("guise the basement of that pizza place totally has a sekrit tunnel to a sekrit underground pedo child traffiking ring!!!!1"), I'm reminded exactly of how many of _them_ (too many) feel towards it--apathetic at best, and at worst--well, you can fill in that blank.

Why would you ever think shaming anonymous people on the internet would work? That makes less than zero sense. And even if it _did_, it wouldn't make me less right. But if you could you tell me which parts you think are inaccurate, _then_ maybe we can have a legit interesting discussion--you cool with that maybe?

Even if I cared nothing for what your channel produces (I do care though and it’s heartbreaking but I wish I couldn’t care). When I launched KZread with the intent to show my own uploads to a bunch of guests and this video was the very first one on the top left corner of the page... well, it was beyond awkward. Possibly the most embarrassing moment of my life. The good news is that the only way I could think to explain the vid (and reassure my guests that I hadn’t been searching for some bizarre intersection of kiddie porn and Stanley Kubrick movies) was to show a quick “top five” Rare Earth vids, and let the works speak for themselves. I think everyone understood, but I’m not sure. As for this video, with its nearly unclick-able title, I gathered my courage and watched (great vid, as usual) and so far the police have not come knocking.

Dear god what is the music at the earlier half of the video, it is so good

For those that are interested, I just finished watching a movie, "Colonia," released in 2015 about the Colonia Dignidad. It follows the story of a German citizen who was arrested, tortured, and imprisoned there during the military coup of Augusto Pinochet. Even though it is a fictionalized account, it is historically accurate. Good acting, weak direction. I recommend it. Evan, the protagonist who prevails in the movie reminds me a lot of you. Keep on truckin, my man.

Remember the first victims of the Nazi regime were ......Germans. And all their neighbors did nothing. ( I’m not complaining about other Germans. I’m talking about French, British, Polish....). Nobody really tried to stop Hitler.

Still have a Viking middle name. ). I used to be fascinated by history. Now, realized that the only close to the truth is military counterintelligence & financial stuff. Everything else is just propaganda for cannon fodder. ( Soldiers regarded merely as material to be expended in war. ). So to find out what’s going on in the USA I’ll read up Russian & Chinese military reports. And to find out what’s going on in Russia, I’ll read stuff from USA military. Also, it’s not common knowledge, lots of Polish generals were very pro Hitler. Piłsudski and lots of others. There were plans to invade the USSR together like in 1920 both Poles & Germans & Japanese defeaded Stalin. Without Hitlers help Stalin would be overthrown by its own population. Prof. Kotkin.
