The National Dish You Never Heard Of (Bobotie)

I am on a mission to try and rate every single country's national dish to figure out which is the best national dish in the world(according to me). Today we're trying South African Bobotie: it's a spiced meat "pie" topped with a simple custard. What am I gonna rate it?

Worked with a South African chef about 20 yrs ago, and he put bobotie on the menu for a few weeks. I loved it, and I believe I still have the recipe. He was adamant that the chutney required had to be a specific brand called Mrs. Balls. It's easily available in the UK, but I don't know about anywhere else.

South Africa has a lot of different cultures and cuisines so choosing a national dish is really difficult, but I think Bobotie is about as close as you are going to get. I myself absolutely love Bobotie and I am so glad you enjoyed it as well. I'm loving this series as I'm also learning quite a lot.

Bobotie is normally served with begrafnisrys (funeral rice), which is yellow rice with raisins. It is a Cape Malay dish which has been adopted by the Afrikaner community many years ago I doubt whether is can be seen as the national dish. Stywepap en vleis (form mealie porridge and meat) is probably closer as most communities in SA has some version of it

Originally bobotie was made from left over roast meat that had been finely chopped or minced. This is the reason the meat it precooked. The spices are from the strong Malay influence of cooking in the Cape and are more delicate than Indian spice mixes. A lot of fruit was dried in season as a way of preserving it for out of season times. The Cape being a great vine growing area meant a lot of grapes were dried. The addition of fruit to savory dishes is very typical of Cape cooking. Another very common dish was gestoofde perskers, dried peaches that were cooked as a vegetable in winter months.

Honestly if I'm at a get together i never eat the potjie, i taste it and it tastes any one or multiple of the colours in the kak spectrum of taste. because most people make a kak potjie. They all make a potjie to their tastes (which is usually bland or just generally kak) and not to make a universally good potjie. But he must try bunnychow or a kota for his cheap lunches videos.

National dishes I would reccomend: 1. Brazil's Feijoada. It's a hearty stew primarily composed of kidney bean, pork, beef and vegetables. 2. India's Biryani. It's a rice dish cooked with a variety of spices and meat. 3. Morocco's Tagine. It's a spicy chicken food with vegetables, and is commonly served with couscous. 4. Spain's Paella. It's a rice dish commonly topped with vegetables, seafood and chorizo (spicy spanish sausage). 5. Thailand's Pad Thai. It's a delicious noodle dish with scrambled eggs, bean sprouts, a sweet and sour sauce and meat (commonly chicken and/or seafood). Hope these suggestions help you on your journey to ranking every national dish!

Lord Jesus Christ is coming back everyone, please don’t worship celebrities and entertainment, focus on Him alone. I promise there’s more to life than money, partying, homosexuality and music. Hell is real, repent from sinning confess your sins and ask God to forgive you, I know He will if you’re sincere. Anyone who thinks the Name of Lord Jesus Christ is a joke, boldly mocks and scorns Him or takes pleasure in people who do is in for a big unpleasant surprise on judgement day IF they don’t repent and follow Lord Jesus Christ. Hell is very hot, people please repent! In the mighty name of Lord Jesus Christ, Amen 🙏💪✝️💜❤️✝️! Idolatry such as, Islam, Catholicism, Sangomaism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Santa Clausism, Confucianism, New Age, Science, Evolution, halloweenism, Harry Potterism, Politics, Donald Trumpism, Easter Bunnyism and other religions/faiths that are outside Biblical Christianity lead to hell! Don’t believe them, believe the Almighty God the Father of Lord Jesus Christ, who begot Him. Our Creator, The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob is mighty, He doesn’t need a woman to beget a son, He is God. I choose to put my faith in a God who can do anything and everything, a God who has unlimited and infinite power to beget! So, it’s time to confess that Lord Jesus Christ is the Lord and to believe that He died and rose from the grave after three days and you shall be saved if you only obey Him by praying, worshipping, praising, reading the Bible and living holy and righteously according to the Bible. You have to endure until the end, carry your cross daily and build your relationship with God by following Lord Jesus daily until the end. You must never renounce your faith in The Lord Jesus Christ, there’s hell awaiting those who reject/deny Lord Jesus Christ and those who continue living sinfully, even the Christians who don’t want to repent will face the same fate, so please repent beloved people, in Lord Jesus Christ’s mighty and precious Name, Amen.

Have you tried my country, Mexico's national dish? Probably would be Mole, pronounced Mo'leh, its a Chili sauce that incorporates spices, chocolate, a stale baguette, a tostada(dried tortilla)all ground up on a stone metate, pronounced: meh-tah-teh, once simmered, preferably over a wood or charcoal fire in a bracero, you sear originally turkey but now chicken, in a frying pan, take them out of the pan and into the cooking pot to finish cooking in the hot mole, served with rice and beans and eatened with corn tortillas, its always served at most weddings, baptisms, birthdays and also just for the heck of it, because it is so good. Bobotie, definitely worth trying here, thanks for sharing KWOOWK, 👍and greetings👋from central Mexico.😊

Bobotie appears to be a variant of patinam ex lacte, a dish documented by the ancient Roman writer Apicius consisting of layers of cooked meat, pine nuts, and seasoned with pepper, celery seeds and asafoetida. These were cooked until the flavours had blended, when a top layer of egg and milk was added. When the latter had set, the dish was ready to be served. C. Louis Leipoldt, a South African writer and gourmet, wrote that the recipe was known in Europe in the seventeenth century.

The mix of ground beef, aromatic seasonings and sultanas immediately reminded me of "pastelitos cubanos", a salty-sweet small meat pie similar to middle-eastern sfihas. Pastelitos are filled with a mixture very similar to the bobotie you made, minus the eggs and the peach chutney. By the way, I love your videos and get a lot of ideas from them for my everyday cooking. I am Brazilian and my husband is Cuban, so our suggestion to you are Brazilian "feijoada" (black bean stew with lots of pork cuts, sausages, bacon, served with white rice, kale, and orange) and Cuban "ropa vieja" (beef cut shredded to after cooking, heavily seasoned with peppers, onions, garlic etc.) or "tamal en cazuela" (similar to a polenta, but made with fresh sweet corn reduced to a paste, cooked with lots of braised pork cuts inside). I would also suggest the Brazilian "galinhada", a delicious chicken & rice dish, but I'm not sure you would be able to get the pequi fruit (Caryocar brasiliense), which is essential to make that dish.

Picking just one dish as South Africa's "national dish" is somewhat of a misrepresentation of the nation, especially if you're choosing Bobotie, one of the most regional "exclusive" dishes in the country. A true 'national dish' for South Africa would be a smorgenbord of culinary delights highlighting the cultural melting pot that is this amazing, beautiful country. That said... good job on making and trying Bobotie. Solid content. Next up, boerewors, biltong, melktert, malva pudding. Oh, and Ultramel Custard... still blows my mind that Ultramel Custard is a uniquely South African thing.

Try feijoada is kind a mouth full to try it. It’s a typical Brazilian dish. So you will need pork belly, feet, ribs, ears, and tail, sausage of pork, beans, green cabbage and rice. So what you do is, you make a rice with Onios and garlic, simple fried rice. (You may to this as the last one). You fried the sausage and the ribs and belly, while boiling the feet, ears and tail. You need to boil it 2 to 3 times, to remove the excess of salt. Make the beans must be dark beans. Then you start to mix everything but the rice and the green cabbage. Let it boil on low for at least 4 hours keep adding water so you don’t burn it. For the green cabbage, you get another pan fried with onions and sausage(slice it). Eat with rice, slices of oranges. You can add a vinaigrette it’s opcional but will majorly increase the taste.

Yeah-story time: One set of my great grandparents were from northwestern Italy in the Cuneo/Piedmont region I know everyone thinks spaghetti is the national dish, but, based on how many times I ate bagna cauda at my grandmother’s house versus how many times I ate any pasta (including her fantastic homemade gnocchi di potate), bagna cauda seems to have at least been the regional dish there. Bagna cauda is, essentially, a cream reduction sauce with 4 ingredients: a pint of heavy whipping cream, 4 tablespoons of butter, 3-4 cloves diced garlic, and 3-4 anchovie fillets. (Do not add truffles, please-they taste like tin, except for the chocolate confections. But those shouldn’t be added, either). Melt the butter in a sauce pan, sautée the garlic until just golden, add the cream and anchovies, stir gently, and let simmer until reduced by 1/4-1/3. Serve in a bowl with hunks of fresh bakery bread and raw veggies-like carrot sticks, celery, cauliflower, and broccoli. I know this has nothing to do with bobities-I just think you should try it. This is my comfort food on a rainy cold night. Btw-the nipple thing on the garlic was the garlic clove trying to grow you more garlic out of its own self.

That "Weird Nipple Thing" on the garlic is basically the root growing, and that for many people that is the thing that causes stomach ache and also bad breath smell, so well every piece of garlic have that if not grown outside it will have it inside, you have to remove that to avoid stomach ache, bad breath smell and also a sharp taste, and I would even try just like frying the garlic whole and when it's golden remove it because the garlic taste will be infused in the oil without the need of infusing our mouths with the killing vampires skill, but then reuse that golden garlic to make garlic mayo, or put it in cold oil and let it infuse that oil so then you can choose how much garlic taste you want.
