Lloyd Bochner grabbing a book with the title "To Serve Man" and screaming "It's a cookbook!" is an homage to the Twilight Zone (1960) episode "To Serve Man", in which aliens come to Earth with seemingly peaceful intentions, offering free trips to their home planet. The hero and her girlfriend try to translate the (alien) book which lends its name to the episode. In the end, when the hero is boarding the alien vessel, the girlfiriend, who just finished the translation, shouts to him: "IT'S A COOKBOOK!" The book was not about service, but about serving man as a delicacy. The hero in that episode was none other than Lloyd Bochner.

Some of the other pictures in the bar are the Ford Edsel, which was a sales disaster. Mike Dukakis who ran for president in 1988 and was leading until he was filmed in an Army tank, and he looked so dumb his campaign collapsed. The San Francisco Earthquake of 1906. R.M.S. Lusitania sinking (not the Titanic). The DeLorean DMC-12, the car company went bankrupt. The Hubble Space Telescope (considered a failure at the time). WW2 British PM Neville Chamberlain, who famously capitulated to Hitler and trusted he wouldn't invade farther.

Imagine watching the opening sequence in the theater: You see them walking down the aisle, then out from the extreme edges, Drebin emerges, and replaces Barbara Bush, next to the president. The story in this film isn't as strong, but the humor is definitely more powerful. By the third film, you will notice a trend: The humor in the films is inversely proportional to the quality of the story/plot. I personally also prefer the first film, but for a lot of fans, this one strikes the best balance between plot and humor. It's easy to forget, but this story takes place in Washington DC. This is why, when Ed talks about someone being implicated, everyone got defensive & pulled out a gun. In some ways, this film does show its age. I assure you, though, those who saw it in the theater, recognized who all the major political villains were supposed to represent. Now, the love scene in this one seems a bit random. However, it will make more sense, if you see the film, "Ghost". (also recommended ) Drebin is an interesting character. Unlike Clouseau, which you guys recently covered, he's not entirely incompetent. He has skills. He can handle his firearm, and he can handle himself, one on one. He's just a little oblivious. The original Get Smart series was like that too. I am glad you guys finally got to this one. I think you'll enjoy the next one. It is MUCH lighter on the story, but it is heavy on the gags. There are also hits & misses, but it's still more rewarding than your typical modern comedy.

This one was a Triple Canadian Threat. Leslie Nielsen was so Canadian that his dad was a Mountie and he spent his childhood in a remote First Nations village in the North West Territories. Lloyd Bochner was a stalwart actor mostly in dramatic authority roles. In this film, he subtly spoofs one of his most famous roles in a classic episode of The Twilight Zone. Robert Goulet was a big Broadway musical star and romantic crooner. He attended the same high school in Edmonton that Nielsen did. He was notorious for being asked to sing the American national anthem and only realizing at the last moment that he only really knew the Canadian one in French. The audience was furious when he sang the words "dawn's early night" and also "gave proof through the fight." Goulet and Nielsen together were magic.

This was a good movie, not a great movie, but it works. The first is still the best, but Airplane was the number one. For me; Police Squad was a TV series that failed because audiences wanted more dumb comedies like 3 Company. However; many of the jokes came from the series first. The classic; "Is this some kind of bust?", "Yes, it's very impressive." Jokes like that I'd seen before. So by this film and the third; many of the jokes get overplayed. So, I understand where you two are coming from on this film.
