    Please watch the video before you comment.... 😂 "Defense wins championships" implies that defense is more important than offense. Simply not true. Basketball is not a game of how low you can hold the opponent's scoring to. It's whether or not you can outscore them. How you do it doesn't really matter. -MDJ

    MDJ it is used more in baseball because you can always hit the ball but can't always have good fundamentals fielding the ball ⚾️

    It's used in baseball because the defense (the pitcher) controls the ball and the offense can only react to whatever the pitcher does. The inverse is true in every other sport where the offense controls the ball, the is why the phrase good pitching beats good hitting in baseball while in basketball its, good offense beats good defense. No matter how good you are defensively your just reacting and, especially on shooting the ball, that means there's at least .2 ish seconds of time where you aren't reacting to seeing the ball get shot. The one in control can do what he wants and the person reacting can only do so much in that regard, hence why its next to impossible to hold a team to low scores and even harder to hold teams to extremely low scores.

    Take Ben Wallace for example, thay guy never averaged double digits in scoring in his career (if I am right). He was the best defensive big man during the 2000's and Dirk was the best offensive big man. So yea, would you chose great defense over great offense?

    Well like he said in the video defense is more controllable and more consistent atleast in basketball because it is about effort. You cant choke defensively in the finals you cant really have an off night defensively. Doesnt mean its more important but the whole point of competing is to find a consistent level of success and thats harder to do offensively in basketball.

    I think the saying is suggesting more that you also NEED defense to win championships not that it wins you championships by itself and that it is more valuable than offense. There have been many teams which had great offense but they didn't win championships because of their weak defense. Defense wins championships because you can't win it all with only good offense. Also you have to consider the fact that teams don't have to be the best defensive teams during the regular season or first rounds of the playoffs but they can switch on during the finals or in a certain match up which fits them. If you know what I mean...I think that it would be very interesting to see how defensive ratings change throughout the season. For example who can Kawhi defend the best and who gives him problems. Or which players/teams play bad defense during the regular season and improve a lot during the playoffs.

    MDJ Its because people value offence over defence a lot more than not, i.e. Melo (one of the best offensive players in the league, bad defender) has 10 ASG appearances while Tony Allen (one of the best defensive players in the league, bad offensive player) has no ASG appearances. The saying is not meant to compare but to remind people how important defence.

    I dont think "defense wins championships" means defense is more important than offense but rather you cant win a championship with a bad defense, no matter how good the offense is. Ex. 2017 Cavaliers never could have beat the Warriors with that poor of defense even though they had a great offense.

  • @skating7791

    @skating7791

    There isn't a team in history that would be favored to beat the Warriors team. Unless you count the dream team. Kevin Durant is the most likely person to break Kareems scoring record, Curry is the best shooter of all time, Klay is a top 5 two way player and probably the best player in the league when he gets hot, and Draymond glues them all together. It's too much for any team to deal with reasonably.

    I think the principal reason around the popularity of this phrase is because the number of stars who only play on the offensive side is increasing. This increase the attention to defense. Sum with this phrase and boom, you have the myth. People needs to realize that sports don't work with constants. The 1st seed can lost to the 8th seed 4 times in a row. It's not that easy though. lol

  • @MrAllenIverson
    @MrAllenIverson6 жыл бұрын

    To me the saying doesn't imply that offense doesnt. It just means that without any defense you can't win. The warriors have good defenders. There's never been a team to win it all that literally had Isiah Thomas defense with every player. Warriors had the defensive player of the year in draymond, klay Is a good defender, curry can pick up a slower player, and durant was having the best defensive year of his career I think. I feel like it's kinda motivation for little kids that just want to learn and play offense. That you really can't win without not guarding up your man or anything. I mean literally no defense at all, just letting them score

    In conclusion defense still win championships. Bad defense and bad offense never win, bad defense and good offense hardly wins, good defense and bad offense sometimes win, good defence and good offense most of the time win. See if u can see find the common theme that win championships. U see a team can coast on defense during the regular season, but still be a very good defensive team who is just waiting for the right time-playoffs to raise their defense intensity. U cant just go by the numbers, there are other variables. Just like a great player can raise his level and made clutch shots during crunch time, a team can raise his level of intensity on defense to make stops and win championships. One last thing if the goat claims that defense win championships, I'll take his words over any type of numbers u can thro at me

    Jordan's probably saying that to motivate his teammates to try harder, since if he says offense wins championships then everyone will want to be like Mike and of course they cannot. Over time of MJ saying this it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy since players that join the Bulls will let MJ do most of the scoring and focus on defense. Now the Bulls have elite defense and offense and they are winning championships. Since MJ knows by saying "defense wins champions" he is winning more championships he will say it even more. Happy?

    They only say that because defense is boring. Teams with a good free-flowing offense tend to be exciting to watch and they can win a lot of games. But to win championships, you need discipline, and that manifests more on the defensive side. The Phoenix Suns in the '90s were very good offensively but come playoff time, you knew they were going to lose at some point.

    Playoff games tend to be tighter and more intense than in the regular season. Which often makes it more difficult to score, particularly in the close ones. So defence becomes even more important in the playoffs, to keep the pressure on the opposition's scoring and relieve the pressure if one's own team is struggling to score. That is why a coach must emphasise defence particularly in the playoffs. Teams who are better at consistent defensive pressure are better equipped to win a playoff series, assuming both teams have decent offenses.

    As for other sports, it definitely is the case in many situations. In baseball, for instance, production from even the best batters drops off significantly against elite pitching. An elite batting team can cruise to the playoffs by scoring runs on mediocre pitching. Come playoffs though, when you have to play teams 7 times in a row and the additional days off allows you to cut the starting rotation from 5 pitchers down to 4 and suddenly a team with 3 top pitchers can start those 3 in 6 out of the 7 games in a series and even the top offense in the league won't be able to do much. In football, rule changes have made for a much greater importance of offense in today's nfl. However, before player safety was such a concern and players were allowed to play a much more physical brand of defense, a top defense could smother a top offense.

    You didn't take into account changes in the way the game is called and ruled. Starting in 2004-05 AFTER the pistons won the title, Hand Checking was "NEW rules were introduced to curtail hand-checking, clarify blocking fouls and call defensive three seconds to open up the game." That coupled with Refs allowing Sloppy, moving screens and offensive players to push off with their non dribbling hands, benefited offenses and handicapped defenses. Defense DOES win Championships WHEN defense is allowed to be played www.nba.com/analysis/rules_history.html

    I think the origin of this saying is not that offense doesn't win championships or not important, it's more because there were lack of focus in the defensive side, especially in the 70s or even 80s NBA. Most everyone were just focusing on offense. Defensive players weren't valued as much and overall defensive level was relatively low.

    I think the point of the saying is to highlight the importance of defense because its more often overlooked by the average basketball fan. When the norm is already a culture of escalating offense theres no need to say "hey guys, you need to score high" because thats already obvious to everyone. I guess in the context of championships, putting extra effort on the defensive end works like a secret weapon?

    I fucking love your videos. In the middle of the video I was mentally noting comments I wanted to add - howthe saying came from football and hockey, players are often less motivated on defense so coaches parrot the saying often, that defense is much more effort based, teams are often able to turn up the defense in the playoffs, great offense beats great defense in basketball, defense is team based and the weak link breaks the chain... etc. You mentioned every single thing in this video about 10 seconds after I thought it. Fantastic content, keep it up

    Australian rules football is quite similar to basketball in regards to play style. It is also the most heavily monitored sport in the world in regards to advanced metrics (as a means to study team/player efficiency). Through these studies, they have found a direct correlation between defensive pressure and win percentage, based on forced turnovers/transition scoring and second chance points. Basically playing to the flow of the ball is a more efficient scoring method, and that efficiency peaks when capitalising on a forced turnover. Good defence gives the transition offence better looks, mismatches and passing lanes and increases scoring opportunity. It can also force an opposing team to abandon its primary offensive scheme, which in turn has a detrimental effect on formation, set plays and general organisation etc. I think that basketball team stats are kind of dubious, because of the limited number of players on the floor and the massive influence one player can have on a teams overall stat line.

    Something worth noting though is that an offense can go on a cold streak where they are missing open shots and therefore not scoring much, and their defense can help keep them in the game in these spots. But a defense can’t really go cold. Of course there can be mental lapses but it’s a lot easier to be consistently good or even great on defense than on offense

    As an european, I can say that this saying might come from Football/Soccer and it is true. Teams average 2.somewhat goals per game, so it is very well possible to finish a game without conceeding a goal. And in that case, you actually can't lose, no matter how bad your offense is. The thing is that one mistake on defense leads to a good chance for your opponent to score, while a mistake on offense will be missing out on a good opportunity to score. And for games with high pace and high scoring such as Basketball, those two usually are equally important. But in a sport where one goal (or one open shot in a good position) can decide a game because teams don't average 100, but average 2, defense becomes way more important. And talking about how important offense is late in games: Defense is, too. Your good offense leads you nowhere if you give up points every possesion.

    Defense requires heart, communication, athleticism, film study, and love for your team. Those traits also help your offense. On the other side, you could be great on offense, like KD, and not really give a damn about your teammates or defense and end up draining the energy out of the team. Offense often times is selfish, like KD or Kyrie, and defense is selfless and cohesive. Good defenders lift up teammates more than scores. Lastly, and more importantly, just listen to the GOAT!

    the idea of defense i often linked to the actual part of the game while you defend you own basket. In my opinion the "real" defense is the "attitude" of the team and how it's built with a certain kind of pace you have in mind. Small lineup and 3pt shooting has reached the highest potential with the GS these years while it failed in the D'Antoni Suns back in 05-06-07-08. This is based about a conception and a bet: you score 3pt with every player while the other big man can score 2pt more often since the shot is shorter and because of a mismatch. The key to championships are rebounds, that's how you win close games: rebounds and free throws. It's no coincidence that big men are those in the top 3 of the scoring list: taller, reabounds and easier shots.

    Saying that it is based off of point differential proves that not only, if you score more than your opponent you will win, but if you do not allow them to score(defense) then you also win. Its safer to say that offense along with defense wins championships. This argument can go both ways. The statistics and numbers are great however there is a hypothetical situation that can debunk this myth, if two opponents are in a championship bout and neither are able to score on each other until one does and the one who scores wins he defended himself better than the other guy, but he also offended the other guy better to sooo its kinda controversial

    I agree that Offense and Defense are equally important, but currently in the league Offense is overemphasized. For example, the Houston Rockets tried to contend for a title season after season, with great offense at the expense of their defense. However, they repeatedly fell short when push came to shove in the playoffs. The reason for this is that in the playoffs, teams such as the San Antonio Spurs and the Golden State Warriors had similarly great offense and great defense which allowed them to dismantle the Rockets and their lackluster defense. It was only last season when the Rockets had defensive aces such as Luc Mbah a Moute, PJ Tucker, Trevor Ariza, and Chris Paul which allowed them to finally contend for a title and would have most likely won the 2018 NBA championship had it not been for Chris Paul's untimely injury. What defense lacks in swagger it makes up for twofold in importance when competing for an NBA title.

    The quote is not about in which thing you are better but what in playoffs matters the most. In a 7- game series you know basically everything so the offensive talent is really important, but without hustle, sacrifice and playing hard defence you can't win it. Even if you have #1 offense you have to play good defense because otherwise that offense will be stopped in some games but the defensive part will stay the same

    That's not fair. If I'm a coach playing against these two then any play where tony Allen has to shoot is a good defensive possession to me, but any play where I have someone trying to score against James Harden isn't necessarily a good one. Tony's offense is worse than Harden's defense.

    I agree that offense is more important than defense overall except in a rare case like Bill Russell where his defense was better than most player’s best offensive seasons, but defense used to be a lot more important before they changed the rules to make it easier for shooters to excel. Bring back hand checking, eliminate zone defense, and allow for camping in the paint on d, and the Warriors probably wouldn’t be title favorites.
