I did a presentation on the book “Orthodox Alaska: a Theology of Mission” to my “The Church and indigenous peoples” class (canadian catholic university) and gave a detailed history on the Orthodox philosophy of evangelism and the historical occurrences of this, with Sts Cyril and Methodius to the slavs, the russian monastics to the natives in Alaska. It’s all very interesting history, no force, no imposition of language. Rather learning the language and customs, then translating into the local language. And it organically grows in the people. When Alaska was sold, and protestant missionaries came, they did a 180, forcing english, and trying to make the natives into “anglosaxxons”. Saint Herman of Alaska pray for us, in North America that we may be made worthy disciples of Christ, through our lives though we are unworthy to allow the Faith to be spread ❤

That class must have learned nothing and completely dismissed you as, from this comment, you've seemed to completely disregard the fundamental aspects of the colonization of the Alaskan region. "...no force, no imposition of language" Imagine you live in an isolated society for time immemorial, then suddenly a giant wooden ship bearing beings that bear an oddly different appearance than yours, dressed in alien garb approaches your land with technology and theology beyond your society's understanding. These people must know of a power that could grant such immensely useful items and theistic knowledge, right? This alone creates a giant divide in a society and you're dismissing those who reasonably questioned outside forces primarily focused on the cultivation of this land. How can you say there was no force while completely skimming over the direct request of St. Herman for defense for the natives against the violent Russian colonists (including the priesthood that he refused to join)? Are you stupid or willfully ignorant? Of course people would side with those who are willing to destroy them. You cannot take the words of those under persecution as gospel. This is not just a flaw on you but the author who is also okay with downplaying the violent aspects of this religious organization. As for the miracles and teachings of St. Hermain, I believe. However, I am not afraid to look our sins in the face as you are. You have utterly dismissed these people through your blindness and I condemn you for even introducing this thought process to anyone.

@@devan1635 thank you. You and I are complete opposites. I started with strong Christian background. Then I lived being a Christian. Then I became more and more educated. And finally around the age 50 realized what is what who is who and that humans invented God. Pray all you want, it will not change what is inside your brain. I am a retired Fine Art restorer who specialized in Christian icons of numerous denominations. I wish you long life, and good education. I am a devout atheist nowadays in my mid 60s.

Aleksandar - i was actually born in Alaska and my family came to the US from Yugoslavia in the 1950’s. I grew up speaking the language with my grandparents, and I was really fascinated with the region. When I was at university, I spent 6 months living and studying in Belgrade - an awesome experience! One night, I was smoking a cigarette on Kosovska Street, near the parliament. A guy in his late 20’s came up to me and asked if he could borrow my lighter. We got to talking, and somehow it came up that I was from Alaska. He proceeded to tell me all about Hermann and said that he is held in very high regard in Serbia. I had never even heard of Herman before this and I was so surprised!

I talked to a older man named Rocko that lived there for a time and was also raised as an alter boy in Kodiak at the Orthodox church who talked about the light that was seen when he passed and also a man in Iliamna who told me of the light they saw in the village there, the villagers immediately knew who had passed, and the Mohawk St I mentioned is Saint Kateri Tekakwitha

The question of „do you love God“ seems to translate as „do you love existence“, or „do you love the existence of the Creator“? We often don’t love even our basic relationships, the ones we claim to dedicate love to, the flaws of the other, much less love the circumstances of life in general. Love thy neighbor, and love God, means love or life and circumstances of life, as God is that. God is the creator of our circumstances, as he is the ground of all being. So „do you love God?“ even in our harshest labor, or our greatest disappointments, our lost hope, even in the face of great adversity, We can love God, the creator. And through that love we can engage in all the adversity of life with renewed effort, renewed love, and devotion. Loving God is a dedication to loving life and God’s order.
