THE MYSTERY OF GOD'S PROVIDENCE

If prayer seems fruitless we must look to the example of St Anna and how God's mercy is not constrained by human exectation.

@@joanna439 Oh Joanna, that is the funniest comment yet. Explain to us all how the Vatican changed the words of the Creed to include the filioque. Then explain how this was not a departure from the ancient faith of the Church. Explain how your "vicars of Christ" have had sexual relationships with men, women and boys through the ages, and even today actively protects pedos around the world while condemning and bullying their victims. Do explain, Joanna, how you think, in your wildest dreams, that this could be the Church of Christ.

@@joanna439 When you claim that Roman Catholics do not revise anything, can you account for the change in the Creed that the Vatican introduced? The insertion of the filioque is but one example of Rome's separation from the historic and living faith of the Church.

To my fellow Catholics here on this thread.....if you were born in the 1960's then you are a product of Vatican II,, There is so much poor theology that came out of that. The Catechism that we have is NOT the catechism of the early church. You must go back to the early church fathers and saints to see the glaring issues. So, I would invite you to investigate more what really came out of Vat II and compare it to Nicea, Trent, Ephesus. To get caught up in these details serves to distract us from proper worship of Christ and the Holy Trinity. One day we will know all the answers. God Bless.

Honestly, the Orthodox belief is most coherent and humble, that she the Mother of God Himself was just like us in conception and birth, though filled with grace so she did not act on the inclination to sin. She could have chosen to but did not by the uncreated grace of God! How powerful is that! In the Roman Catholic belief, she made no choice and could not sin.

There is often complaint that 'right' is not trusting in our own righteousness, but in the righteousness of the Creator. Righteous beings want others to be righteous, but in seeking righteousness it might be important to begin with what we think is right, trusting in the Creator's discipline and guidance, and in this essential to hold on to no convictions of our own rightness.

The miraculous conception of Christ and His birth from a virgin is the historic faith of the Church. The "immaculate conception" however, refers to the the conception of the Theotokos and was a doctrine created on 8th December in 1854 by Pius IX - this recent innovation is not believed by the Orthodox Church. It is surprising to see how many Roman Catholics here are not aware of the differences between Orthodoxy and Roman Catholicism.

Fr Spyridon, thank you for your teachings. I find them very blessed! I am Roman Catholic and I'm afraid you have a wrong conception of our beliefs. If you consult our Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) 1262-1264 the church talks about Baptism and some temporal consequences of sin that remain (effects). It is important to remark that the doctrine of sin is a mystery (not fully understood by any Christian). We believe in two type of sins that are rooted in Scripture: a) Hamartia (Greek) = we have fallen short, transmissible sin, such as those of Original sin and effects (concupiscence), and intergenerational sin and effects (generational bondage). b) Parabasis = the violation of a specific command, or personal sin. In relation to the Immaculate Conception Dogma, it took 1850ish years to declare it as a Truth. I invite you to, rather than criticising, go to the documents and reasons. I did an exercise simpler that any basic maths as I am no theologian, but helped me understand the logic: Adam=born sinless; Eve=born sinless; New Adam (Jesus) = born sinless; New Eve (Mary Theotokos) = born ? (immaculate). It was part of God's plan before creation. She was destined for this special grace of purity to receive the God-man. Job 38-4 “Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding". God bless you!!

The Theotokos herself, during her apparition in Lourdes France in 1858 identified herself to an ignorant peasant girl as the Immaculate Conception. Furthermore, if we are born without some stain of sin on our souls, what is the purpose of an exorcism at baptism? Perhaps much of this is semantics... the guilt of sin versus the effects of sin. I think the best practice is to simply respect theological traditions and nuances in the East and the West without poking each other.

Paul refers to himself as less than the least of all saints and as the chief of sinners. He also doesn't give a blanket statement that everyone is considered a dating, but specifies that those who are consecrated in Christ are saints. Consecrated is not a light word. If somebody goes to church on Sunday and spends the week in the world going to movies, watching TV, watching the Super bowl and random videos on the internet.... That is not someone consecrated in Christ. One obvious sign of a saint is that they don't think or refer to themselves as saints.

  • @saintgraham

    @saintgraham

    Жыл бұрын

@@lighthousephotographybandera The word “saint” comes from the Greek word hagios, which means “consecrated to God, holy, sacred, pious." It is almost always used in the plural, “saints.” "…Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much harm he did to Your saints at Jerusalem" (Acts 9:13). "Now as Peter was traveling through all those regions, he came down also to the saints who lived at Lydda" (Acts 9:32). "And this is just what I did in Jerusalem; not only did I lock up many of the saints in prisons …“ (Acts 26:10). There is only one instance of the singular use, and that is "Greet every saint in Christ Jesus…" (Philippians 4:21). In Scripture there are 67 uses of the plural “saints” compared to only one use of the singular word “saint.” Even in that one instance, a plurality of saints is in view: “…every saint…” (Philippians 4:21). The idea of the word “saints” is a group of people set apart for the Lord and His kingdom. There are three references referring to godly character of saints: "that you receive her in the Lord in a manner worthy of the saints …" (Romans 16:2). "For the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ" (Ephesians 4:12). "But immorality or any impurity or greed must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints" (Ephesians 5:3). Therefore, scripturally speaking, the “saints” are the body of Christ, Christians, the church. All Christians are considered saints. All Christians are saints-and at the same time are called to be saints. First Corinthians 1:2 states it clearly: “To the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be holy…” The words “sanctified” and “holy” come from the same Greek root as the word that is commonly translated “saints.” Christians are saints by virtue of their connection with Jesus Christ. Christians are called to be saints, to increasingly allow their daily life to more closely match their position in Christ. This is the biblical description and calling of the saints. How does the Roman Catholic understanding of “saints” compare with the biblical teaching? Not very well. In Roman Catholic theology, the saints are in heaven. In the Bible, the saints are on earth. In Roman Catholic teaching, a person does not become a saint unless he/she is “beatified” or “canonized” by the Pope or prominent bishop. In the Bible, everyone who has received Jesus Christ by faith is a saint. In Roman Catholic practice, the saints are revered, prayed to, and in some instances, worshiped. In the Bible, saints are called to revere, worship, and pray to God alone

@@saintgraham Thanks for sharing. I'm not sure what exactly you think makes someone consecrated in Christ. Church goers today think very liberally about this term. For example, being someone who practices unceasing prayer would a be good start. How difficult is this? Yet so many who barely even pray at all every day like to say they are saints. But Paul didn't call people who give a portion of their lives to Jesus "saints." He said those who are consecrated in Christ are called to be saints. Big, big, big difference there. The Greek word Jesus used to say "Follow me." didn't mean to follow Him when you finish other pursuits, the term is a calling to drop everything and follow Jesus for the rest of your life. Jesus is the only pursuit of those who hope to be His disciples and of those who are called to be saints. And I'll remind you again my friend.... A sure sign of a saint is someone who doesn't think of themselves as saints, or call themselves saints. It is an endearing act for Paul or anyone who follows Christ to call other members saints, but never do you see a saint calling themselves a saint. That might be a hard, thin line for you to follow me on, but it's biblical. So if you know someone who calls THEMSELVES a saint, that's a sure sign they aren't one. Find me a Bible verse where a saint refers to himself as a saint and I will change my mind on that. Thank you for sharing my brother.

How many people do you know that refer to themselves as saints, but also do things freely of their own accord? Would Jesus ask His slave to watch an NFL game, or enjoy a Hollywood movie with friends??? Never. So those pursuits are for people NOT consecrated to Christ. Yet we both know there are many many church goers who enjoy those pursuits. And they should refer to themselves as saints?? A slave has only one choice at all times: to do only the bidding of his Master. That, my friend, is somebody who is consecrated. And like Paul, they will refer to themselves as the chief of sinners.

@@lighthousephotographybandera Sports and athletic competitions have been popular since ancient times. The Bible draws several analogies of the Christian life from the sports world: 1 Corinthians 9:26 contains a reference to shadowboxing; the author of Hebrews likens the Christian life to a race (Hebrews 12:1); and Paul admonishes us to “run in such a way to win the prize” (1 Corinthians 9:24, CSB). Given the Bible’s positive use of sports-related analogies, there can be nothing inherently wrong with viewing or participating in athletic events. Following one’s favorite football team, playing a few rounds of golf, attending a volleyball match, or signing up for community softball is something Christians can and do enjoy. Christian athletes and coaches often have the opportunity to use their prominence in sports as a platform for advancing the gospel. Christians who play sports can attest to the many benefits that such involvement can provide, including stress reduction; weight control; camaraderie; and the development of accountability, leadership, and communication, goal-setting, and problem-solving skills. The endurance and perseverance required in athletic competition can be valuable in building and strengthening character. One of the greatest benefits of competing in sports is the development of self-control: “Every athlete exercises self-control in all things” (1 Corinthians 9:25). In the crucible of competitive action, the presence of self-control-or the lack of it-becomes obvious to all observers. Some athletes (and fans) handle game-related adversity with grace and poise; others melt down in an adult temper-tantrum. The problem is not the sport; it’s the inner character of the athlete or fan. In many ways, a sporting event provides an occasion to test the character of both winners and losers. Christian athletes, coaches, and fans should be filled with the Holy Spirit and display the Spirit’s fruit, no matter where they are, be it on the court, on the field, or in the locker room. As in all areas of life, we must have balance in regards to our involvement in sports. We must set priorities. It’s easy for a sports fan to overdo it, committing too much time, money, and other resources to what should be an entertaining diversion. It’s easy for an athlete wishing to succeed to devote an inordinate amount of time and energy to training, to the neglect of family, friends, or walk with God. The Bible helps us clarify our priorities: “Physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come” (1 Timothy 4:8). Sports is good and beneficial when kept in perspective. Never should sports be allowed to crowd out time with God or become more important than seeking God’s kingdom and righteousness (Matthew 6:33). Idols are not to be a part of the Christian life (1 John 5:21). And in whatever we do, on or off the field, we are to do it all to the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31).

We don't believe in Fatima or any of the Roman Catholic "apparitions", to be fair. Not trying to be mean, just pointing that out. The Immaculate Conception dogma (or even as doctrine) doesn't work with the ancient Orthodox belief in ancestral sin (that we are born with the inclination to sin, but not born with stain or guilt of the original sin as Roman Catholics believed for a very long time, that we are all born with guilt and stain of the original sin..the RCC is dialing back on that since Vatican II as with many things). The dogma of the IC is a post schism innovation as it was not even a doctrine before the Great Schism. It is not needed in all honesty and seems to be man trying to make sense of things by adding to the Faith, and also elevating the Theotokos above all others as sort of a human goddess. We believe that though the Panagia (Mother Mary) was born with ancestral sin, as with us all, she did not act on it as she is full of grace (that is, uncreated grace) as the Archangel St. Gabriel said to her in greeting at the Annunciation. Therefore she is just like us in her conception and birth, however she overcame our inclination to sin by being full of grace. This is powerful. We also must remember that Christ is God; true God and true man fully. He did/does not have a human father in which to pass on the ancestral sin and thus was born free from it even His Mother though full of grace was born with it.

Thank you Father for your words. I always find them edifying. As a Catholic Christian, I have to disagree with you concerning the Immaculate Conception. The Church Fathers, both East and West describe her as follows, “most pure,” (Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom) “formed without any stain,” (Proclus, Laudatio in S. Dei Gen. ort., I, 3) “all-Holy,”( Hippolytus, Against Beron and Helix, Frag VIII) “undefiled,” (Ibid) “spotless,”( Hippolytus, A Discourse on the End of the World) “immaculate of the immaculate,”( Origen, Homily 1) “inviolate and free from every stain of sin,”( Ambrose, Commentary on Psalm 118, 22-30)" It must also be mentioned that Sts. Gregory Palamas and St. Photius of Constantinople both affirmed the Immaculate Conception. An Eastern Orthodox theologian, by the name of Fr. Liv Gillet states the following, "The Academy of Kiev, with Peter Moghila, Stephen Gavorsky and many others, taught the Immaculate Conception in terms of Latin theology. A confraternity of the Immaculate Conception was established at Polotsk in 1651. The Orthodox members of the confraternity promised to honour the Immaculate Conception of Mary all the days of their life. The Council of Moscow of 1666 [which included the patriarchates of Constantinople, Antioch, Jerusalem, and Alexandria] approved Simeon Polotsky’s book called The Rod of Direction, in which he said: ‘Mary was exempt from original sin from the moment of her conception.’" eirenikon.wordpress.com/2008/07/31/the-immaculate-conception-and-the-orthodox-church-3/ An Eastern Orthodox Priest Fr. Laurent Cleenewerck, in his book entitled, "His Broken Body," wrote the following, "The Eastern Tradition has always considered the Conception of the Theotokos to be a miraculous event. Joachim and Anna, elderly and barren were given the power of God’s blessings on account of their prayers. The Orthodox Churches celebrate Her Nativity on the 8th of September, but the Feast of Mary’s Conception was advanced to 9th December. If the principle of Lex Orandi, Lex Credendi is to be applied to this issue, it seems that Orthodox Hymnography presents Mary as Truly Panagia (All-Holy) entirely free from sin and stain (“Immaculate”) from the point of Her Conception." I also think that it is imperative that we also look at the concept of "pre-purification" of the Virgin Mary, that the East holds, in relation to the Immaculate Conception. God bless.

He performed so many miracles that his fellow priests across the country turned against him, because he is so blessed and they, even while being higher rank than him, are not doing nearly as much as he does and obviously don't perform miracles, not nearly as much as he does. There has been one particular priest in wolf's clothing that could have easily met with saint John of Kronstadt, but decided not to, because he was too proud. As such, he was the culprit behind the February 1917 revolution - he started it all. He brought people to the square, fully knowing that they would be murdered, as he welcomed the coming of the revolution of materialism. Same thing is going on today with those who knowingly bite into the brainwashing from the west. It's a spiritual plague. Those who still retain the faith in Christ, which is now hard to do, due to the schism that has happened in ukraine (the higher-ups and the government chose the wicked path), will be safe, however, with the prayers of the Holy Theotokos.

Great sermon but something I do have to mention is that having been raised in a very Catholic home and being baptized and Chrismated into the Orthodox church is that the Catholic concept of Original Sin is not an inherited guilt but functionally no different than ancestral sin except for it using slightly different wording to say the exact same thing. The Immaculate Conception dogma in the Catholic Dogma simply enumerates that in order to bear Christ, the Theotokos was preserved from sin so it would not be a heresy but simply redundant to what Apostolic Tradition already enumerates.

Thank you for sharing your words, but your claim is simply not true. Mary was chosen by God and therefore was given all the grace and purity needed to bear our Savior by God and Mary accepted. Jesus was fully man and fully God. To claim that Mary was immaculately conceived would mean that Jesus had no connection to humanity and was all divine, which is the heresy.

Thats not the Catholic belief of the Immaculate Conception. Catholic Original Sin is Orthodox Ancestral Sin. We are deprived of Grace (original justice) and are incapable of avoiding sin (being separated from God). This is detailed at the Councils of Carthage; the alternative being denounced as Pelagianism. Since Mary is Sinless, and the best saint, she must have been filled with Grace from the beginning. This is the immaculate conception. The east believes this too until the Catholics declared it. Just see their calendar for the feast of the conception of Mary… To deny the IC is to be Pelagian.

Fr. you are mistaken and teaching in error about the Mother of God. She is the immaculate conception. An analogy: St. Luke's Gospel that the Holy Spirit came upon Mary and she conceived a child: Jesus. It is a reality that Mary was the spouse of the Holy Spirit. But the Holy Spirit is truly the eternal Immaculate Conception. By becoming the spouse of the Holy Spirit, Mary takes His name in the same way a bride takes the name of her husband in a human marriage (particularly in those times). Mary then is the created Immaculate Conception while the Holy Spirit is the eternal Immaculate Conception. In a very real way, this is Mary's true identity (spouse of the Holy Spirit) and is the most correct and most descriptive name she can give herself. The answer is very simple, it would be wrong if Blessed Virgin Mary would answer the question of St. Bernadette asking "Who are you?" with a description "I am immaculately conceived". There's no way St. Bernadette can identify the Blessed Virgin Mary with that answer. Next, if the Blessed Virgin Mary answered St. Bernadette with "I am the Mother of God" it would negate the purpose of the apparition which is very much related to previous apparition of Mary to St. Catherine of Laboure with a prayer invocation; "O Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse to thee." - Catherine Laboure (Wikipedia) The Blessed Virgin Mary answered St.Bernadette question with the words "I am the Immaculate Conception" is the truthful answer because Mary was not the one speaking but a Divine Person. Mary was possessed by the Holy Spirit and St.Maximillian Kolbe has a good explanation on this mystery.
