💯% Agree. Most people in the west, find this style and technique of singing so foreign they cannot comprehend the depth of technical skill, phrasing and musicality is imbedded in the arrangements and performances. The jazz feel in the first song is incredible. It rivals the Tonight Show band's swing feel. And anybody who is a jazz'er can hear it.

Bulgarian culture is so rich that it's hard to explain. You should see, hear, experience it. And only after that, you would be able to understand what it's all about. I'm glad that I was born and raised in that beautiful little country called Bulgaria. :)

@Blarie Actually, no you are very wrong, they’re definitely not. What they are wearing is called носии and that is simply alone Bulgarian culture and comes from the country Bulgaria not the countries you mentioned. Bulgarian national clothing and traditions are very different from Turkish so that what your seeing is all our own. Educate yourself on the culture before you comment false info. This is coming from a Bulgarian :)

We in Bulgaria have a deep respect for the Czechs, because of the positive cooperation between our two nations in historical sense. The Proshek brothers, who were Czechs, supported our struggles for national liberation, and then were the first investors in the newly built bulgarian Tzardom, helped a lot in building it as modern (for the time) european country. Many blessings for our Czech brothers, may your good people prosper.🤝

It makes me so happy and proud to see people appreciate our folklore songs in such a way. I’ve never been someone who’s patriotism extends beyond curiosity and my role as a part of our nation and could never really understand people who strongly believe people have some duty due to their bond with their ancestors but... Every time I hear this music being sung or played I start crying. Its not that Im wailing though but my eyes literally just start leaking with my nose running and my throat tightening hard and this distinctive feeling i get in the chest... Its like clockwork even when I anticipate it and try to hold it in and I don’t know even why I react so strongly and like a reflex. Its the weirdest sensation... The songs performed here actually are pretty upbeat (as in cheerful) and still have this effect on me but this tone is in fact rather uncharacteristic for our music which is basically defined by being very sad and melancholic - due to our tragic national history. This doesn’t mean they make me cry harder though :D ....but it happens literally the instant I hear them while with these here a few seconds pass before “it” hits me.

+tezeu21 It's very hard to translate it literally since there are lots of dialect words and exclamations, but basically it's about a bachelor boy who puts his cap (some old-time equivalent of dressing fancy for Friday night out ;)) and goes to dance with the girls (the traditional Bulgarian dances - horo - are usually danced in circle or in a row from many people holding to each other), but they all run away from him (ashamed or something of the sort) except the youngest and most beautiful one. That's for the first song. At 3:22 starts a second one - about a young girl (Todora) who is sleeping under a tree dreaming that her first love has returned to her. At 5:47 starts an American song (Suzanna dont' cry for me) sung in Bulgarian folklore style :D

A bachelor grandpa a "red"(drunk) grandpa has flipped his hat upwards - that's the way/ I do that - do thatatatat. Then he got on the horO (a dance with lots of people) - he got on the horO with the young women, and they ran away - that's the way - that's the way ay ay ay. Then they start the whispering. And say Dum (imitating the sound of a drum (playing on the horO) then the next song is about a girl called Theodora, lying under a three, and she was beautiful. Then the sounds is too fucked afterwords and I can't get the words out of them, cuz the words are too old, and I know the song as Gergana was lying under the three, but you can probably Google it -"Полегнала е Тодора" and translate it. The last one I can't get at all - it's obviously a translated english song in Bulgarian for fun, so I totally can't use my knowledge of bulgarian folklore, so that's all folks!

Just wanted to stop by and add that I'm SO HAPPY to finally have found where this came from! I first heard it in the masterpiece soundtrack of an otherwise mediocre 2008 videogame: Alone in the Dark. :)

@DaddysTaz As a musician and a great aprecciator of world music, I must agree that there are only minimal influences from the oriental cultures like India or Pakistan. Such music is caracterized with pentatonic scales (like the Ragas in indian music) and here we hear different modes and different usage of intervals, harmonies and rythms. Although this version is probably adapted from its older origins, it is tipically bulgarian, and very dinstinct from everything else.

Lord, that sound! Strong, proud voices, clear words (although i don't understand them). Harmonies ethereal, rich, powerful. Wow. And I love that it's middle aged women singing - this group is somewhat under valued in American society, so great to see the strength here.

  • @user-bq2lv2ks3y

Everything else aside, as a Bulgarian I think it shows a lot of respect for american culture that they performed a country song after their songs. It takes a lot of work to create such an arrangement for an entire chorus just for this single performance. I hope this was understood and well received by the audience. What do you think?

Ok random comment here, but when I was a child I watched a show called "Xena the princess warrior" and I think the show used some of their songs or something similar because I remember hearing songs like this and they were all with the choir. This is beautiful.

A good part of the Xena soundtrack indeed consists of Bulgarian folk music and songs, arranged by Joseph LoDuca. Though it wasn't performed by "The mystery of the Bulgarian voices", but rather by LA session singers (with reportedly only one Bulgarian singer among them). Quite impressive, I'd say!
