Comparing Dreamcore to medicine you took as a kid is so spot-on. You’re safe, you’re being taken care of, you don’t have to worry about school, but it’s all because you’re physically ill and having to endure that. Maybe you’re still in your pajamas despite it being 1PM, and there’s this weird knowledge of the world still spinning outside despite being confined to your house

Vaporwave made me feel fascinated with the music genre. While City Pop and Futurefunk has the 80s energetic and bubbly aspects of Japanese pop music, Vaporwave feels as atmospheric and out-of-this-world in a most relaxing way with the essence of the 80s neon lights, uncanny CGI, and Greek statues.

My earliest memory with the frutiger aero aesthetic was back in 2009. I was in pre - k at the time and I remember I was having a bad day. I kept getting in trouble over some bs and my teacher told me to cry in the bathroom. When I went to wash my face, there it was... That container of soap with the fish on it that had a smell reminicent of bubblegum. I squirted it into my mouth.

My favorite aesthetic was that period of television cartoons in the 80's and 90's where cartoons made for Western markets was animated in Japan. They had these animators try really REALLY hard to try and make everything look Western animation style, but they had so much anime influence it was always present. So you had these cartoons that weren't quite American, weren't quite Japanese, and they had this strange artistic quality to them I can't really describe. And back in the 80's and 90's, shows used all these different animation companies from all over the globe to fill the episode quota, so you could always tell which were the anime looking ones.

Ruby Spears Mega Man is like. Literally the ultimate example of this. It was straight up originally _supposed_ to be an anime, stylized like how the Japanese box arts looked, but then it was slowly turned into something for western audiences, with the Japanese influences still there. It makes me sad for what could have been, but its fun to watch for laughs

  • @mightyfilm

@@lambybunny7173 Yet, still animated in Japan. I can't blame them for making it look "Americanized." Pokemon and the anime boom were just around the corner, but the showrunners didn't have that foresight. And maybe Ban Dai screwed something up. They are the reason they only had 2 seasons. Still, the big examples are Toei's work on Transformers and G.I. Joe and TMS's work for Galaxy High, Ducktales (that somehow managed to look more like Carl Barks's Scrooge and Donald comics than any other studio), and eventually Tiny Toon Adventures and Animaniacs where they even tried their hand at American squash and stretch animation.

its so interesting how the main thing that ties all of these aesthetics together is nostalgia. they’re comforting and unsettling at the same time because we’re all just fighting to capture this shared feeling of bliss, purity and comfort that we felt as kids, yet only exists in our memories. memories are muggy and rarely ever identical to the actual event, as the images and music of these aesthetics reflect well.

Fruitiger era reminds me of the older text book that still uses old stock images. Surprisingly in my country,English language text books are all from the 2000’s and still not updated. I remember there was one chapter about fantastic 4,the movie. And fashion that are very 2000’s. Y2k is coming back in my country, believe it or not. But it’s mostly fashion in the Hi5 era (if you know that website ,you know what I’m talking about). Sadly the term ‘y2k’ for us included all years in the 2000’s (2000-2009) so it’s not ‘authentic’ y2k of 2000-2001 .

Honestly I feel the same. It’s like going back to play your favorite online game just to find that it’s only you. I guess I like dream core and liminal spaces because it helps me come to terms with time anxiety. That it’s alright to move one because if you don’t, well you’ll only be left behind and hey, maybe you’ll find something better further along. It’s also a way to deal with loneliness or isolation because it gives you the sense that you’re not the only one stuck, there are other people who feel the same way. Liminal spaces and dream core feel like a way to connect with others, to have someone understand even if the aesthetics are based around being alone.

i live just outside of dallas, and in dallas there’s something known as the “dallas pedestrian network.” it’s basically a series of tunnels that were intended to basically be a little shopping area/place for office workers to get some food/etc. but it never really took off. it’s still open and you can walk around (it’s still used mainly by office employees getting around) and there’s a couple open shops (last i checked) but it’s got this really eerie feel to it. it’s like a typical dead mall but there’s a lot less open space and you almost feel like you shouldn’t be there. and it almost feels endless. hoping to go back soon because i never did finish exploring!!!

I used to find Aero to be an annoying aesthetic, but ever since logos for everything have started getting overly simplified I've actually started to kind of miss it. At least with Aero there's something for you to visually take in, it feels like a fleshed out style. There's something so distinctly incomplete feeling about the more recent aesthetics going around. They're easily recognizable but lack all their former personality, like a zombie.

I was born in 1989. It was such a interesting time to grow up. I'm glad I got to experience it. Before things changed to how they are nowadays. There was a sense of Retro-Futurism mixed with vintage vibes. McDonald's had Nintendo 64's, Blockbuster/Hollywood video, you could preview music before buying it. Magazines would come with demo discs for new games coming soon. There's so many reasons why the 90's ruled. Because it had a bit of a 80's vibe and attitude. Such awesome Aesthetics all over in such diverse ways. Nowadays, it's like they completely got rid of any "fun, goof off, odd stuff." It's like everything is all modernized, minimalism, contemporary, bland, repetitive and if it doesn't make money 💰 then it's gotta go.. Nowadays they've gotten rid of most of the old houses, odd shops, drive in movie theaters, Arcade's, roller rinks, obstacle courses, bouncy houses, indoor fun zones with r/c speed boats, mini golf ⛳ with loops, bumper cars, ball pits, just weird random stuff. Random weird cartoon's/commercials. A time when we could play halo 1 on CRT TVs and link up LAN parties. Towns still had older run down sorta house's, duplexes, just unique "lower income living options ya know?") where I live they have literally gotten rid of all of that and just put in cookie cutter type places to live and everything costs ridiculous per month and everything is so bland and stale. I just miss the creativity, the quirkiness that's all. Being born in 1989 I was lucky to get to see the tail end of these things that aren't around anymore and I can't help but wonder what it must be like for kids that never got to experience the stuff the 90s kids got to experience. I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. Getting to be a teen when wild Boyz, jackass, CKY was a big deal 🤘🏻 a kid when Steve Erwin was literally my idol! Growing up on magic school bus, bill Nye the science guy, captain planet, X-Men the animated series, all the animated series tv shows. All the classic animated movies. Like it was the best time to be a kid and a teenager. It had such a Vibe. I was a big "X-Men the animated series" fan growing up. It was so well made. The story of mutants was universally relatable. They touched on difficult topics yet in captivating ways. (That's what the 90s is to me) Growing up in the 90's there was such a wide range of Stories, art styles, topics they touched on, unique Character's, creatures. They embraced the weird, odd, macabre things. I loved how things used to embrace these things, the difficult things. Good stories used to be told, in very creative intelligent ways. Nowadays everything feels or comes off like this cheap cop out, shallow live action version nonsense. I miss the Era of creativity, of animated series, or use of Practical effects, filming techniques and use of miniatures. Things used to make us utilize our intelligence, tap into parts of the human condition that abstractly connects us to any character no matter what kind of character, creature, specie's, talking object they are. There is so many stories we could be telling and art that could be created but we are treating our entire audience like they are 2 yr olds that just need shiney keys waved in front of their face for entertainment.. But at the end of the day, the way things currently are is a very shallow way to entertain.. That's how I look at a lot of modern day media. The most frustrating thing is that I know that we could get right back to creating masterpieces like the lists of things made in the 80's-90s-00's. Maybe some people who are in charge of creative projects need to sit down and watch footage of those things to refresh their memory. Maybe then they could see, just how well those things stand the test of time and age. Even in our current era. Here is a quick list of things I still go back and watch to this day: (Pretty much anything created by Don Bluth or Written by Roald Dahl) Little Nemo and the adventures of Slumberland, My Brave little toaster, James and the giant peach, The never ending story, Beetlejuice, Addams family, Batman, Batman beyond, Jumanji, Hook, The secret of the Nimh, Sword and the stone, black cauldron, beetle juice, Alice in wonderland, Rock-a-doodle, Captain Planet, He-Man, Thundercats, Spawn, power rangers, Dinosaur's, TMNT, Matilda, The BFG, Ren and stimpy, courage the cowardly dog, magic school bus, Dexter's laboratory, pinky and the brain, rocko's modern life, Ah! Real monster's, goosebumps, are you afraid of the dark, pee wee's playhouse, she-ra warrior princess, Flintstones, the Jetsons, Reading rainbow, Thundarr the barbarian, Cow & Chicken, IR Baboon, the animaniacs, Tom & Jerry, Land of the Lost, Gumby, G.I. Joe, Hey Arnold, She-Ra, Gargoyle's, Toxic crusaders, Felix, Conan the adventurer, the tick, Powerpuff girls, angry beaver's, cat dog, wild west cow boys of moo mesa, skeleton warriors, tales from the crypt keeper, wild c.a.t.s, galaxy rangers, ultra force, mutant league, kablam, action league now, celebrity death match, all that, wild Thornberries, freakazoid, Ed, Edd and Eddy, mXc, Recess, Johnny bravo, MAD, Bobby's world, fairly odd parents, Legends of the Hidden Temple, jimmy newtron, invader Zim.

You have put everything I love about the 80’s and 90’s in words I could never describe! Thank you! I really do love that era even though I was so unlucky and now I have to suffer being from around the 2010’s (I’m not comfortable sharing when exactly). You are so right, everything these days are so bland and it lacks the quirkiness and creativeness, I live everyday wishing I was apart of the 80’s-90’s. You guys had the coolest thing! Nowadays I’m so intrigued and jealous of old tech because it had personality! Comparing my wii to my switch, like come on where is the music?! VHS and Cassettes sound so cool and your fashion was so quirky and colourful! Even music was so diverse instead of the same cliche “Arianna grande break up song” . And you are so right about the movies, Disney here is shovelling us trash and attention spans are terrible. Every movie has the same lesson and is so bland, they try so hard to Appeal to the modern generation with the “quirky I’m not like other people high school placeholder kid”. Don’t get me started with the horrible power of friendship trope. I hope I didn’t annoy you with this essay hehe, I just really resonated and loved what you wrote, hope you have a good day!

I was born in '88, and agree wholly with everything you've said. A lot of the movies you listed really brought me back, and it explains why I stopped watching TV and movies mostly. It all feels like the same recycled trends, and everything these days is flat, simple, or minimalist. It feels devoid of life, like when Taco Bell went from being this super colorful place with fun and wild art to, well, gray and stone. Walmart went from having a smiley face and blue colors to an asterisk and gray stone. I don't find many movies these days as memorable as they used to be. It really was special to have grown up during the times these aesthetics thrived, and it's so interesting to venture into these spaces and see mostly younger people and even kids who never experienced them (and it is weird because I feel like the only person in their 30s in spaces with aesthetics I grew up with!) As for liminal space stuff, it's all reminiscient of styles from houses I actually grew up in during the 90s and early 2000s. It is just so interesting to me how so many in later generations latch onto that stuff, but I am glad younger people brought it all back. I just feel a little awkward often being the only older adult in the comment sections reminiscing.

Specially since i moved out of my childhood home. a lot of my arrival to my new house was filled with these dark streets and parking lots that just have a specific feeling to them. i was still moving in my new house, starting a new relationship, finishing high school, becoming an adult, abandoning my childhood. i guess i was in that transitional state between my old life and my new life, my childhood and my adulthood. i couldnt help but feel nostalgic for those 17 years i had lived in my old home. my old home felt like a “liminal space” once it was barren from furniture, the old home that i grew up in and was once full of furniture and scattered clothes and toys. it was like a beautiful mess, and then it was gone. Frutiger aero also has such an interesting feeling to me, while not as deeply personal, it brings me back memories of watching youtube in my old phone (anyone remember the completely black layout with the old logo?) or just the old earlier “smartphones” (quotations because they were not smart at all they just had a touch screen) i had or messing around with my moms lg shine phone. also using my moms huge dinosaur ass pc which had windows 7 on it, i played sonic.exe there for the first time lol

Frutiger aero is the aesthetic I grew up with, and my favorite aesthetic. I loved the Wii and Xbox 360, I loved the 3DS, and I often used an Apple iPad or Windows 7 computer. I remember Windows 8 coming out and feeling flat, and boring. For me, the aesthetic reminds me of all my childhood games and experiences, and when I would be able to go outside and participate in fun activities more often. I can't remember the last time I went on an egg hunt. In my opinion, it is not outdated. If everything was suddenly frutiger aero, I would actually be happier. Not because it's the past, but because I prefer a more bubbly, vibrant, and fresh looking aesthetic over the soulless flat colors of modern graphic design. I mean look at the Firefox logo. It was a great looking frutiger aero globe with a red fox on it. Now it's a stupid modern swoosh. Now look at the Internet Explorer logo. Same thing, except they also rebranded it to Edge.

05:20.I know that feeling. Must have been 13 or 14 years ago. I was about 17 years old, at a party in Oberau (Bavaria). My phone was dead. I had missed my last train. And I just wanted to get home. So I decided to walk and, if possible, hitchhike my way home. I was shit out of luck. There were no cars on the road. It was about 2 o'clock in the night when I started to walk home. And about an hour after I left the house, it started to rain out of buckets. I was soaking wet when I was half way home. Then, just outside of Murnau, I saw that there's a light on inside the local gas station. It was 6 o'clock in the morning. I was soaked and ice cold. And that place was my save haven. No joke. I still remember the taste of that fresh hot coffee and the smell and taste of that cinnamon roll. That brought me back to life again.😊

It often makes me wish I could go back to my childhood and relive those fun times when those aesthetics were still prevalent everywhere. I mean, I have very fond memories of Windows 7 in particular, it was until around 2017 or so the OS I tended to use. I still have very fond memories of Windows 7 in particular, it was until around 2017 or so the OS I tended to use. The feeling of liminal spaces to me is that of danger. I feel like its more primal. Imagine if you will, you are early human who wanders around territory that you know well, and one day you go there and notice its dead silent, not even birds chirping. That would probably indicate to you that you might not be alone and that everything else left because that area is now dangerous for some reason that you arent aware of yet.

Amazing video, you did a great job explaining, but oh man i knew you would explain weirdcore incorrectly, many people get confused between weirdcore and dreamcore, and that's understandable, both are different aesthetics, but they overlap alot. "Weirdcore: intended to be nostalgic and/or unsettling to a degree, uses a style of imagery similar to early 2000s, commonly associated with liminal spaces Dreamcore: Meant to depict imagery in dreams/dreamscapes, emphasis on surrealism, tends to have characters and narratives grounded in theme Common weirdcord elements: disembodied captions, orbs and voids (lens flares), censor boxes, compressed/low resolution images Common dreamcore elements: eyes, objectheads (and characters in general), angel wings, clouds, pastel colors Both are fully capable of overlapping, and more often than not an edit can fall under both weirdcore and dreamcore category"... Most of the edit you showed in the dreamcore/weirdcore section were dreamcore, i suggest reading the weirdcore wiki and watching this video https ://youtu. be/XpgddVUidq0 (remove the spaces)

I think Craig McCracken, Gennedy Tartakovsky and Lord & Miller are to thank for that because it’s so nostalgic to me as a gen z adult. Great video BTW, I'm nearly twice as old as you are, and yes there is a strong nostalgic feel to it all. Reminding myself of being a kid in a family that is no longer living. A simpler, less lonely time. Like these images I'm defying time simply by still being here. Being a lone survivor, these images feel normal, a normality I never thought would end up reality. With these aesthetically themed photos you get to stare into the abyss a little, it's kind of addicting. You get a strong sense of mortality, both for ourselves, and times we live in. I also love to explore different music genres, both before and after my time. Many times the footage associated with various "wave" music looks like a Peter Gabriel video, with the stark difference his videos were the most cutting edge thing of their time. Music speaks of it's own time and you can feel long gone generations through it, as well as what makes us all human, it's something old as time and constantly reinventing itself.

abandoned means COMPLETELY forgotten about, they have their own niches and that's the point, they're supposed to be underground type aesthetics, not out in the open in your face type stuff. Also these ALL fit under the Vaporwave parent genre. They are all subgenres of that. its also not all associated with music like people think. It was an aesthetic before it was music, remember that. Also it needs to be stated what people think of the backrooms as is WRONG. It is NOT some 1000 rooms that lead to one another, its just the one original room and that's it. The original post said "rooms" but it wasn't referring to the 1000 rooms, but essentially different sections of the original. We don't even know if there were any entities in it either considering the ACTUAL lore only just barely hints at it. Kane pixel is the one that started the 1000 rooms lore which completely and utterly undermined the whole point of what it actually was.

It also makes me kinda bother that nowadays is so praised, because at the time, it was considered too corny. Also, I'm pretty sure that in 10 years, people will be nostalgic about minimalistic style and logos. Nostalgia is really a cycle that blinds the past.

There is a restaurant in my city that has been closed for almost 20 years and for whatever reason it has stayed in the same condition that it was with the exception of overgrown grass and plants. Because it's on a main road I have walked by and looked in the windows so many times and they're still flatware and cups on the tables and even then use at the hostess podium. One of the creepiest things is that there is a list of names and the corresponding sections next to the restaurant layout that is at the hostesses podium. Wake it seriously looks like they were just open even though it's been two decades. Places that were once filled with tons of activity and people that are all the sudden empty is always going to be very interesting to me for some reason.

15:25 honestly Weirdcore reminds me of a mix of looking back to when you were younger even if “younger” wasn’t that long ago and feeling so sad yet joyful? Like you know e we’re glad about everything only a few years ago and now you look back and just want to cry about how you wish those around you warned you better to appreciate exactly what you had but also the feeling of remembering that ur younger self wasnt Always happy, and the feeling of being told “don’t cry it’s nothing” or being pushed down in a embarrassing manner because u felt low mentally or was crying about something. Or discovering / feeling something new that seemed like something bizarre but normal now like being more sick than usual and thinking ur about to die. Weird core kinda balanced the idea of nostalgia from ur own pov and reminding urself of all the bad that happened like going to a park you liked and having fun just to remember ur parents fighting in the car on the way home or crying at the super market because ur mother told you something rude.

I do love these aesthetics in particular, as those traits of isolation and permanent disruptions of my status quo stretched for further than just the pandemic for me, my late teens faded into various weird philosophical realisations about my sense of perception and maturity, and my adult life is built on these. I had my mental health denied a lot, I could only confirm that I was autistic once I saved up enough money and did the mental labour to have a professional say it. Surreal, weird, visions of the world and fixations that are unfixed to the expected template of maturity are my life, and I feel very seen by the media in these aesthetics. That common neurodivergent feeling of being in a foreign world and social culture that makes no sense, these aesthetics can feel like what I imagine mainstream media taken weirdly more familiar and affirming worlds would be like. Y2k also gives me the same feeling, as I too am a 1999 kid who had older siblings and a financial class that meant I was raised primarily with secondhand clothing, toys, and media. The Y2k and 90s worlds feel simultaneously like time travelling to my childhood and a period before I was born/conscious. 2000s throwback trends always feel either incredibly old or incredibly new to me, and it's appealingly strange.

Remember being a teenager in the late 90s, this whole video brings back so many memories, thank you. Im a soldier that joined after 9/11, so seeing those twin towers with that music, it hit me hard.
