As someone who has ghost-written several books about the early history of Islam, this is actually a very well researched and thoughtful documentary. All too often you see widely popular theories about Islam by people who don't know even the most basic facts about Islam, Islamic history, Mohammad, or the Arabic language and those are extremely frustrating. Dan Gibson does actually know what he's talking about. Whether you agree or disagree with his conclusions about Islam it's obvious to me--as someone who has studied and written extensively on the topic--that he does know the subject matter and cares about it.

Even as a non-Muslim, a Christian, I am appalled by the burning of so many books. It seems to me to be a terrible act of vandalism and a complete destruction of many, many historical texts. How our modern historians would have loved to have pored over so many pieces of historical writings! To say it took many months to burn all those books shows that an absolutely enormous amount of irreplaceable historical texts, of immense importance, were burned - for fuel! All the work of the scribes, the many years it would have taken them to painstakingly write out those texts, which must have been precious to them - just gone up in smoke! This is truly very sad.

An amazing documentary. I am so grateful that there are people who dedicate their lives to unraveling such unanswered mysteries. I thought it was a brilliant documentary regarding Islamic History, pure and simple. Why do you have to give it a political twist? I thought it was a brilliant breakdown on Petra being the true Islamic Mecca. It has nothing to do with the current state of political upheaval. Please, appreciate Mr. Gibson's hard work for what it is - a brilliant, thoughtful, well-explained, mind provoking possibilty of the original holy Islamic city - nothing more, nothing less. Have you viewed or traveled to the City of Petra? It is magnificent. For myself, as an Anthropologist (I drop all political ideas/thoughts), and simply appreciate the history and culture of an ancient, and most beautiful, city.

The history of that area is, in fact, possibly the most studied region in the world. There’s already supporting archaeology and has been for for many years. You obviously just have an ace to grind that has nothing to do with historical fact.

This theory was proposed by Dan Gibson, a Canadian amateur archaeologist, who claimed that early mosques face the modern direction of Petra rather than the modern direction of Mecca⁴. He based his argument on his own measurements of mosque orientations and his interpretation of historical sources. However, his theory has been challenged and refuted by many scholars who have expertise in Islamic history, astronomy, geography, and architecture. Some of these scholars are: - David A. King, a professor of the history of science at Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt. Not really. Historians are notoriously known for dogmatism and assumptions. See Clovis First and you'd understand. I'm going to keep watching and questioning but I'm highly skeptical of this because the narration chains in Islam are second to non. See Marijn van Putten, a person given two million euros grant regarding studying Qur'an and he came to the same conclusions about Islam as we're taught in mosques.

The internet has shown Islam is false, as a former Muslim it was hard to see the truth, but it’s very important.

The video suggest we all muslim to research, study and show more fact in form of evidence rather than just telling story that easily could be another lie or false statement make by the elders or powerfull person. This video should encourage we, the muslim to study more and tell them the story with fact and studies, not just a word, speeches or writing form that easily make the muslim argue to each other and confiusing. We should change our ways to tell the people about the truth in islam more effective ways with fact and proves that will bring a big impact that no one can argue. Surely this video is a theory, but just look how some of the muslim react on this video. How big the effort it take to makes muslim unite into one if there is certain arguement which is not base on fact that all muslim will accept. If there is a strong prove or evidence we show, there is no arguement needed. Read, study, examinate the fact and prove it in more effective ways are needed to prevent any doubt in many claims we makes. Its hard, but surely someone should do that and spread the truth or the claims we make with fact and proves. Thats it for now. Sorry if there is any mistake from this comment, and also for my bad english. Im just taking the good moral value from the video, not to argue to anyone about anythings. Maybe im not the only person that want a clear explaination about certain things. The Quran says the Earth is flat, that's also why they tell you to face the Kaaba. You can only face the Kaaba if you can see it, from any other location in the world it's impossible to face the Kaaba because the Earth is round.

Another very important place is Medina(Madinah/Yathrib). Should try to relate this to Petra. Prophet Mohammad travelled several times between Mecca n Medina. Surely there will be records in term of directions.

We learn at school, twice a year, Sun will align directly above the kaabah known as Istiwa' A'dzam. We can determine the exact direction of the Kaabah by placing a wooden stick vertically in the ground; the direction of the Qiblat will be the exact opposite to the stick’s shadow. It's easier for us facing Makkah Al-Mukarramah, Alhamdulillah.

First thing we have to do is ban non Muslims from entering Petra. They're not allowed in Mecca and shouldn't be allowed in Petra either. I hope king Abdullah will watch this and immediately ban all non Muslims from entering our holy city.

Surely it's more important that all Muslims are facing the same way, since they don't pray for the Kaba, they pray for God. The direction is to unite. Also, if it's the wrong place why are the other holy sites (like the well and the mountains) all in the vicinity?

Ridwan ᮯᮂ I read the King’s ‘Petra Fallacy’ and found that he is actually using the text of Abbasid time which are not presenting complete picture. King appeared to be more emotional rather than factual. King ‘s article appeared baseless and is not presenting wholistic pictures including archaeology, timeline and depiction in Muslims and contemporary literature. By the way Dan Gibson has responded to King’s article, go and watch you will be more enlightened.

Even THE PROPHET MUHAMMED (PBHM) has once talked about that Black Rock to his followers saying--Do not concentrated so much on this Black Rock that you think is God, it is just a symbol,

this is the opposite of what I read, in Quran it is explicit that the tribe who "carves houses into mountains" is refering to somebody else called "Thamud". Also prophet Muhammad was explicit about the minor sign of End of Days; that there's be tall building around Kaabah, which meant Kaabah in Prophet Muhammad's time do not have tall structure like it was in Petra.

@@Nehmi yes, so it is the same direction. The kaaba was destroyed during the second fitna. According to Gibson's theory the black stone at that time was transport to Mecca and a new Kaaba building was erected there.

@@Nehmi No it is not. It is stuck on one of the corners from the outside. It can be touched by pilgrims from outside. The black rock is not what Muslims face during prayers. The black rock is not a part of the religion and it is not mentioned in the Quran. The black rock was placed in the Kaabah before Prophet Muhammad gained prophethood. The black rock used to be revered by the Arabs during pagan times and placing it in the Kaabah was an act signifying unity. Even today the act of facing the Kaabah by all Muslims during prayers is an act of unity. Unity is huge in Islam. Beware of the many so called religious historians who try to belittle the Muslims and their religion. Don't get confused by them. They have evil intent but will never succeed. Islam has very strong foundations. Prophet Muhammad transformed and adopted Judaism, which was at that time was a racist and tribal religion and made it universal. He believed everyone is equal and everyone is of a 'chosen people'. He accepted all the Jewish prophets as Islamic prophets and also adopted all the rituals and religious practices of Judaism including Namaz. He also accepted Jesus as a prophet and accepted his virgin birth.

I'm a devout Muslim and believe that indeed Petra is the true City of God. In that case, we must immediately ban foreigners from entering the holy city. In Mecca, non Muslims are not allowed to enter so this rule must immediately be put in place in Petra. I hope King Abdullah of Jordan will do so immediately.

Good to know that. Do they usually change the cloth. I even read that the Saudis captured the place from the Yemenites. The rock was said to be a shrine of the Yemenites. In north africa they don't call a mosqe "masjid", they call it "jame3" and jame3 means gathering, hence the confusion I guess.

Am sure before the mosque is guoing to finished Muslim leaders during those time are consulted about the exact direction because that is Muhammad instructions where to face direction in time of praying.

Yet, those who are mentaly religious still often claim that Adam and Eve exists and that is much more believable than scientific research and should rather rely on it instead of science in order to understand where we all came from. His theory that the first kibla was facing Petra was already debunked by Prof David King,Johann Wolfgang Goethe University. You can google and download his paper. To say Islam started in Petra instead of Mecca, Dan Gibson need to find Hira Cave, Zam Zam well, Location where the first mosque was constructed, location for the Battle of Uhud, Badr etc and need to prove the reason the Petran abandoned Petra for Mecca. Unless he can proved this then his theory can never pull any traction.

The zamzam water is in mecca rightnow. Can't move that zam zam well to another location.

There are few flaws for this theory. First thing is Cave of Hira location where Muhammad SAW first met Jibril. And second is how the hell did they miss Zam zam well? Also what is this black rock? Do you mean Hajr Aswad? If that is the black rock, we don't pray at it. Ka'abah is just a direction we have to pray towards. The Black Rock was said to have fallen from heaven and the patriarch of the Jews, Abraham placed it in the Kaaba. I don't believe what this man is saying is that Muslims pray to the Rock but they felt that rock was special. I'm not Muslim I am just interested in the world's religions and history. It seems to me that this man knows exactly what he's talking about and can place what he says in historical terms

In my place, Indonesia, Java, the mosque does not actually face the Qibla, but faces west, but when praying, of course it is slightly tilted by a few degrees and facing the Qibla, maybe when building a mosque there are many aspects that must be considered, such as location, road access , gps technology that did not exist in the past, not everyone can know the accurate direction using stars

Modern research has shown that the idea of a collective ‘all the knowledge humankind have ever had’ library in Alexandria is mostly a myth, though it’s known that there were several major libraries existed. There are proven accounts of the first fire in 47-48 BCE by Caesar (mentioned by himself) and some others in following 2-2,5 centuries by Roman Empire. For further reading I advise Gibbons on this issue.

Do u know ancient times does not have satellites to set accurate measurements, just slightly 1 degree can changes hundreds of KM. and you took sample of several mosque . there are hundreds of mosque out there, and also, ur fact is all about after the death of Prophet's Muhammad, did u know that Kaabah was there before Muhammad?, Its been there since Prophet Abraham (Ibrahim AS). Miraculously the surah (2:125) simply change into the reading of latitude 21°25' is the exact location of the Holy Kaabah. And thats is where the Miracle of the Quran took place, even the Quran is 1400+ years old without satelites God tell us to prostrate on this Ancient Kaabah long enough before Prohpet Muhammad PBUH is born. Even is you change the latitude into minutes reading which is 21°42' on the Kaabah. It still comes to the next sentence about the Qiblah , Surah (2:142) "The foolish among the people will say: “What has turned them away from their Qiblah which they used to observe?” Say: “To Allah belong the East and the West. He guides whom He wills to a straight path.”.. There are hundreds of Proves in Quran even scientific findings that is less than a hundred years are there 1400 years ago. The only Holy scriptures that strenghten my faith until now.

Dear sir, we muslims are teached, how to find the kibla the direction for prayers. It Is very simple that's by looking at the our shadow with the sun only. Early morning from 6.00am to 12.00 noon we have to face alone the direction of our shadow. And after 12.00 noon till night ,we have face opposite to the direction of our shadow. This shadow of ours should be only with the help of the sun. Which gives only one direction. Due to time passes or earthquakes if the direction changes. this is the only way to identify the true direction. If iam wrong pls correct me.thank you❤

@Willful Mystic Hate to be the bearer of bad news but, Arabs were in a primitive technological group by the early Islamic age. They mainly started with maths and geometry and other such during the Baghdad House of Wisdom. Mainly because they got access to the Ancient Persian, Roman, and Indian scholars and documents. And no Arabs did not make the English language, I believe they influenced around about 1-2% of it. But mainly through other languages that were influenced by them like Spanish or Portuguese, which the English borrowed a few words from.

When Moses brought the Israelites out of Egypt he gave them a sign to wear indicating they would go on the Hajj to Mecca. However, due to their taking the calf as a god to worship they were punished and never allowed to go to the Kaaba. Mecca was far south of where the exodus and wandering in the wilderness took place. ---- The Kaaba was built by Abraham and Ishmael. Other Prophets including Jethro (father in law of Moses) went on the Hajj. If it is true what was said that the origin of the Kaaba is not in today’s Mecca but in Petra, why are Saudi Arabia and Jordan been decidedly muted on this issue? The Organization of the Islamic Cooperation also been noticeably quiet. Why aren’t they speaking out? And haven’t you wondered why over 98% of the Islamic historical sites in that Kingdom have been destroyed since 1985? Even the Prophet’s house in Mecca, signs in four languages warn visitors and say that there is no proof that the Prophet Muhammad was born there, so it is forbidden to make the place specific for praying, supplicating or get blessing. The house of the Prophet’s first wife, Khadijah has made way for public toilets. A Hilton hotel stands on the site of the house of Islam’s first caliph, Abu Bakr. It’s not just in Mecca either. Over a year ago, the split in Mount Uhud, north of Medina, where Muhammad was said to have been carried after being wounded in the famous Battle of Uhud was filled with concrete. A fence went up at the base of the mountain, warning visitors that it was just like any other mountains. Six small mosques in Medina where Muhammad is believed to have prayed have been locked. The seventh, belonging to Islam’s first caliph Abu Bakr, has been razed to make way for an ATM. Isn’t this odd to you? Only time will tell.

Since a few degrees cause a big error at long distances, i wonder how accurate themodern buildings face towards Mecca

the easiest way is to use the sun. know when the sun is right above mecca, then calibrate the direction using the shadow. this method is still used today to recalibrate the direction especially in places where there are not enough resource to calibrate with modern technology

I'm sure using GPS wil show a more acurate direction. but even if we miss the kiblat, it doesn't matter. muslims pray to Allah alone. ka'bah is a symbol for unity, seriousness, and more importantly is where Prophet Muhammad was facing during his prayer, and we follow how he pray. even if the direction of masjid is calibrated to the minutes or even second, the way we stand is not always perfect. at home without compass is even more. muslims have to try their best to follow what has been told to them (in the Quran and hadith), that's it. if we are wrong, it doesn't matter as long as we try our best. Islam is easy but not to be taken lightly, Allah will not make it hard for his people unless the hardship is within the persons ability.

It really is magnificently amazing that all most ancient quiblahs point so accurately to Petra, given that we are always told there was no way to map such things before compasses were invented in the 17th century !!!

These locations can be confusing. In Jambeez the prayer “Mekaleka hai mekahainy ho…mekaleka hai Mekachonny ho” is quite explicit. Most scholars agree with this

None are taking precedence over another. They're parallel to the A to B line that you get from Petra to Mecca. I think you're overthinking it.. Since by that time there was contention as to which was the holy city to pray to (the original holy city in Petra or the new holy city in Mecca) the builders decided the way to give them the same deference was to build them facing the direction that's parallel to both cities.

It is truly amazing that the Qibla of Guangzhou could direct to Petra thousands of km away at that time.

@@mohdnazirismail2024 Not saying this hypothesis is the truth. But I do believe there would be no requirement of qibla if they don't have the way to chart the exact direction in the first place. Besides, how do Arabic merchants navigate their way in the remote desert and oceans? They could lose their lives if they mis-calculate.

And please remember it is God order. Not human being. Turn then Thy face in the direction of the sacred Mosque: Wherever ye are, turn your faces in that direction. The people of the Book know well that that is the truth from their Lord. Nor is Allah unmindful of what they do.

I don’t know how a scholar that claims to be a professional could miss the glaring evidence of Zamzam in determining the location of Mecca and the Kaaba. The well has been there for about 5000 years and is still there today.

30 years ago, when I was introduced to Islam, it was made clear that the quibla direction had changed shortly after the founders moved their base from their original location because of persecution. It was no secret, although the previous direction seemed less relevant. directions on a global surface can be misleading : great circle or straight line?

this is insane to compare the qibla direction in degrees using latest gps devices with 650 AD methods of finding directions :)

One theory is it is Petra in Jordan. Changed to another place to protect Petra. Early Mosques faced towards there in some reports. I hope this discussion mentions such ideas. It makes more sense it was Petra.

There seems to be a disagreement about if Caliph Omar really told Amr to destroy the Library of Alexandria , as Bar Hebraueus lived in the 13th century AD long after 600 AD , it doesn't seem that Caliph Omar would be so careless about libraries and books

its not a good research, Dan clearly and intentionally left some facts that don't support his theory. for example, he said that mecca was greenery but the Quran says otherwise: "O our Lord! I have made some of my offspring to dwell"in a valley without cultivation", by Thy Sacred House. In Ibrahim 'sura' he prayed to god after leaving his wife and son "Ismail" at place without cultivation! so how can this "Sacred House" be Petra which we know that it was filled with trees which conflicts with the Quran.

The reveal of Petra was like the commercial showing the krabby patty
