The must-have MDrive Retrofit DIY for BMW E9x M3s[ENG SUB]

The #MDrive feature (option code or vehicle order: #2MD) for the BMW E9x M3s has an additional Sport Plus Mode for engine power control, an additional M Dynamic Mode for traction control, an additional Sport Mode for power-assisted steering and an #MDrive menu in the #iDrive interface.
#MDrive is optional in some markets so some #E9xM3 do not have this feature. The key part is the steering switch cluster, the #SZL. The #Mbutton on the steering wheel is optional because the original multifunction switch will be coded to work as the #Mbutton.

The M Button: sold as in the whole switch cluster. The aftermarket ones are available on the Internet.
For the #E9xM3 without #iDrive, or the single-hump version, #MDrive is also retrofittable. There will be no #MDrive menu for customizing the combination of modes of electronic damper, engine power, traction control and steering assist.

T10, T20 Torx bit: airbag, SZL
16 mm hex socket: the steering wheel
torque wrench (60 Nm): the steering wheel
NCS expert&NCS Dummy: Coding
Tools 32 or ISTA: Calibrating #LWS
INPA or ISTA: Clearing fault codes
===The retrofit process===
1. Disconnect car battery.
2. Remove the steering wheel.
3. Replace M Button (optional)
4. Replace the #SZL
5. Restore everything.
6. Change VO.
7. Code DME.
8. Code CAPPL of iDrive.
9. Calibrate steering angle sensor, the #LWS.
10. Clear fault codes
11. Enjoy the MDrive!

    Excellent video! I wish this had been around when I was fumbling with the coding on my car. I have one problem that you don't however - I have a non I-drive 6 speed car. When I enable M-Mode there are some default settings that I can't change(steering, MDM enable, power levels), as I don't have the I-Drive interface. Do you see anywhere those defaults are stored? There must be a place outside of the I-Drive where non I-Drive M mode defaults are stored, as the non-I-Drive + M-mode configuration was sold by BMW. There is some feature in the business radio relating to M-mode, and I did enable that as far as I can remember, but that didn't change anything.

    Hi nodemgr thank you very much for your comments! I had been fumbling too at the very beginning. I remember that you sent me DMs on M3post, thank you again for the inputs! You are the successful DIYer I’m referring in the video! First of all, the owner’s manual only mentions about setting up the preferences via iDrive. And I do not have any information about the other places we can set our preferences. I think iDrive is the only user interface available. Please refer to page 20 of the E92 M3 After Sales Training, the junction box JB/SV is responsible for sending signals to DME, DSC and EDC-K via the PT-CAN bus. I think the iDrive/business radio, CCC/MASK, do tell the JB/SV what signals to send when the M Button is pressed. I used NCS Dummy to look in the JBBF module but just couldn't tell which options are related. What are the settings you wish to have for the M Button? I can send you my trace files of iDrive and jubction box or other modules related to MDrive, for you to study with NCS Dummy. Please feel free to mail me at funcarsgoodpeople@gmail.com !

    @@funcarsgoodpeople Ah great to know it's you! Actually I got many ideas from this video...I realized I had not coded the non-US MDM correctly, so I just fixed that. Also I didn't even realize how to use NCSdummy to that will be helpful! Thanks for the tip on the JBBF, I believe there are one or two items in there I need to investigate. Will report back if I find where to set the settings for the M-mode. Right now when I enable M-mode I see power and EDC with 1 LED...not sure what setting the steering is set too.

    My pleasure to share something useful! So your default EDC for Mdrive is normal(one LED) and at this moment the MDrive menu in the business radio does not work. I get it. Please see the options DC_DC_DIAGNOSE, BISTABLES_RELAIS_JBBF2 and PIA_EDC in JBBF2 module. They are the only ones I could find related to MDrive. (I’m also interested in the MDrive menu in the business radio. Could you please send me some pictures?) Try to drive around curves consecutively and switch on MDrive to see if heavier steering force input is required. Sport power-steering mode should make your steering wheel heavier and it’s obvious(but not super obvious lol.)

    @@nodemgr i also have a 6mt non-drive and about to do this. did you figure out how to change/select your M-Mode activate to change the steering/mdm/power? I guess my question is, 1) when you turn on M mode, does it change steering to stiffest, dsc to MDM, and power to sport plus? 2) how did you code your multi-function button to turn on MDM AND not change the audio input? thanks

    Hi Kangxi thank you for your comments! Yes MDrive is essential to the M3. If you are the OE guy, don’t roger to put on the EDC as well 🤗 and if you are crazy like me, get your M3 the Individual Audio and rear window sun shades 😂 Stay tuned!

    Hi Arjun thank you ❤️ I am an airline pilot actually 🤗 Before this career I was a student in physical science and I love troubleshooting and DIY. But I couldn’t have done all these projects without the information and knowledge shared on the internet by other DIYers.     後門遮陽簾、電吸門一定要的 💯 我查好那兩個按鍵是什麼了;自動啟停,還有下坡輔助。但後者不是M3的功能,因為動態輔助模組DSC是不一樣的。 所以M3最多只有5個按鍵而已 🥹
