The Mummy Returns (2001) Movie Reaction - THIS IS SO MUCH FUN - First Time Watching - Brendan Fraser

Ойын-сауық

Hey Knights! Come join us as we watch and react for the very first time to The Mummy Returns (2001) with the incredible Brendan Fraser. We hope you enjoy our movie reaction to this classic. The Mummy Returns was such a fun time filled with thrilling action and adventure with some hints of horror. As a sequel we think it definitely succeeded in capturing the essence that made the first movie The Mummy so successful whilst also keeping the dynamic fresh and new.
The electrifying chemistry between Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz as they reprise their iconic roles also returns with an energy that leaps off of the screen. This time facing a new wave of danger, ancient curses and the return of the terrifying Imhotep, brought to life by Arnold Vosloo who killed it in all the scenes he was in as the imposing Mummy!
We hope you enjoy our commentary as we unravel the film's intricate plot, examine the evolution of the characters, and marvel at the seamless blend of heart-stopping action, breathtaking visuals, and witty humor.
The Mummy franchise has become a timeless classic and we hope we get to bring you a little bit of that 90's and early 2000's nostalgia. Thank you for watching this with us ❤️

The Scorpion King (2002) // prequel to the mummy and the mummy returns, but it's just starring dwayne johnson, no branden-frasier/o'conner and no rachel-weis/evie and no etc characters like her brother and etc, either, but it's still really good, and it is the prequel, of the mummy story/lore/trilogy

This was Dwayne Johnson's first role, that "heroric contract" wasn't a thing yet (I personally think he would excel at playing antagonists/villains). He was probably at the height of his wrestling popularity as "The Rock". The whole thing even spun into his wrestling career at the time, creating the "Hollywood Rock" era of his wrestling persona. He got his own, cool spinoff movie, "The Scorpion King," soon after due to his popularity, which I totally recommend, thus the big, Hollywood Action Hero, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was born...

@@mishiara5499 Correct. True love, in the Biblical sense, is selfless by definition. It is not merely a feeling, even though it can be felt. It is sacrifice. Imhotep and Anck-Su-Namun might have shared some types of "love" such as desire and passion, and maybe they even cared about each other to a degree, but ultimately it was about what was in it for themselves. Not that that is bad in and of itself, because all healthy relationships should be reciprocal rather than one-sided, but true love requires that they love the other at least as much as themselves, and would sacrifice of themselves for the benefit and well-being of the other.

Johnathon gets a bad rap so often but I think it's important to point out the timeline of these films. While Rick was in the Foreign Legion and ended up part of the doomed Hamunaptra expedition, Johnathon also served during World War I (most likely in the trenches of France). It's true he's a shiftabout scoundrel type, but he's also a former soldier likely dealing with the same soul destroying trauma that poisoned pretty much every trench soldier in that war. His way of dealing with it seems to be just going whole hog on being irresponsible, but at the moments it counts most he shines.

But they fell even shorter than DC, because DC at least had a roster of characters that are almost universally beloved. Most of Universal's monsters aren't critically acclaimed in recent years, so there wasn't as much investment going in. Honestly it's not terrible for the time, faces were still really hard to do at the time, and it didn't help they were trying to make the face of an existing person. CG was better at environments, particles, and objects. If you look at the tidal wave face, the face itself is pretty bad but the fluid simulation of hte rest of the wave, especially as it crashes against hte canyon walls, is pretty decent for the time. Regardless, the CG gets across the idea well enough, the Scorpion King's face isn't really the focus, it's the fact that he's a giant scorpiontaur, and that's rad.

I think the difference in the two couple's love for one another is demonstrated really well in that final scene (though it is built throughout the two films). Rick telling her to go, save herself and their son and she doesn't listen, racing out to save him. Imhotep, on the other hand, calls for her to save him and she decides to save himself. I think he really did love her but even he had a desire to live even at the risk of her life. Love this movie, the two together tell a great story with good characters. Is the CGI a little rough in place? Sure. Is the overall plot and story sometimes a bit cheesy/campy, yes. But it all works so well overall IMO.

That's a great observation you made about the two different kinds of love exemplified by the two couples. Rick and Evy's love for each other was sacrificial and genuine, while Imhotep and Anak Su Namuun's love for each other was more self-driven. When both men were trying to come out of the chasm after fighting the Scorpion King, their hands were shown. Rick was wearing a wedding ring--a symbol of love and commitment. Their love was legitimate. Imhotep and Anak Su Namuun's love was built around murder and disregard for the lives of all who stood in their way. It was never legitimate.

If Imhotep had truly loved Anck-Su-Namun, then he wouldn't have wanted her to risk her life to save his, like how Rick told Evelyn to get out of there and save herself. And earlier, Anck-Su-Namun, despite desiring power for herself as well, had begged, implored him to forget about all of this and just happily live with her instead. That was when she learned that he would no longer have his Mummy powers. Before they were taken away, he would have defeated the Scorpion King easily, so sure, go for it, take over the world for us, but without his powers, he was likely to be killed instead. But he didn't care about what she wanted, he'd rather risk it all to dominate the world, which was something that didn't need to be done. Rick only did what he did to save the world (it needed to be saved, either way, but Anck-Su-Namun wasn't thinking about that, only that she wanted Imhotep to live and be with her). I think Imhotep really did love Anck-Su-Namun in some ways and to some extent, and we can see how her unwillngness to risk the ultimate sacrifice for him, as Evelyn had done for Rick, absolutely crushed him. In his mind, theirs was an epic love for the ages, and it really did span thousands of years, in a way. They did fight hard to be with each other, but that was driven by passion, not true love, after all, because true love is sacrifice, meaning that you care about each other more than your own selves, not mere desire (there is nothing wrong with desire and passion, but ideally there should be more). I think Anck-Su-Namun also loved Imhotep, but apparently not enough to risk her own life to save him, especially after he had ignored what she wanted for them, putting his greed above her, and then expecting her to risk her life to save him. She wasn't feeling it anymore, and took off to save herself.

This is what caught my attention as well. People diss on Anck-Su-Namun for leaving him dying without realising if Imhotep truly loved her, the way Rick loved Evei, he would never have asked her to risk her life for him. That's why I never really felt that bad for him. They both deserved each other in a way.

Man, I'd kill for a TV show of the first 2 movies that goes into detail about their past and present lives. It feels like there could be so much lore there to explore, connecting both timelines. One of the rare cases where I think a sequel is just as good as the original, and doesn't just feel like a cash grab.

  • @rodgill9376
    @rodgill9376 Жыл бұрын

Such a great and fun sequel. It raises the stakes a bit more too with Rick and Evy's son being caught in the middle. The horror while still there, kind of toned down a bit. It kind of also brings questions from the first film full circle in a way. Things we didn't see the first time within such context. Like there was more going on with Imhotep and Anck Su Namun, with Nefertiri watching it from the sidelines and seeing what's going on. Its like the moment when one of your parents remarry and you kind of have a disdain or contempt towards your stepparent and seeing something is not right with them. It also explains why Evy acts different here. She might be one of the few characters to have gone through such an interesting development. Hell, she kicked so much ass this time around too! Also, the musical score in this is just as good as the first one. Kind of picks up where it left off. The only real issue I have is what they did to the Scorpion King in the end. His CGI face still looks like shit lol.

How about those twists with Evie’s and Rick’s characters! Absolutely brilliant no one saw it coming lol! Btw Those fighting moves are real btw it’s an ancient Egyptian form of defence art called “Tahtib” which is derived from stick fighting and Stone shaping and in combat it was made into Egyptian Sai Swords like the ones they faught with. This is a lost art I have learned it from a few whom are left who still practice it but it’s mostly now made into a folklore dance with sticks with or without music to accompany it. Anyways back to the fight scene I’m a huge fan of that particular scene as well as it really makes me feel like I’m back to my ancient roots ❤

That was fun to hear moments before you saw the Scorpion King xD Actually this is one of the those movies which make people think that early 2000s VFX used to suck. Back in 2001, the VFX team apologized with Brendan Fraser for the final cut, because they didn't have enough time, but Brendan Fraser, being just awesome as he is, comforted them. Anyway, this movie is still great and lot of fun even today.

Difference between the couple-Rick tells Eve to just leave because he loves her and he doesn't want her to get hurt or die by falling debris, Eve goes anyway risking her life (again) to save him. With the other couple, Imhotep calls out to Anck-su-namun asking her to save him disregarding the potential risk to her life, after spending hundreds of years in hell, it seems she doesn't love him enough to risk dying and going back there again. In the end, i think what they had was not true love at all.

Corridor Digital did an episode where they had the guy who was in charge of something for the CGI with the Scorpion King, I don't remember if it was art director, or lead animator, or what. Basically, it wasn't necessarily the time this came out (it was 2 years after Star Wars Episode I and the same year as the first Harry Potter, though obviously not as advanced as today), but mainly time constraints. The studio didn't give them enough time, so something had to be cut somewhere and it ended up being the scorpion king. So it wasn't necessarily the best they could do at the time, but more the best they could do WITH the time.

yeah, this movie was rushed out after the success of the first film. 2 years is just not enough time for what they were trying to do. it did have a slightly larger budget, $98m vs the mummy's $80m, but they were doing over twice the effects and much larger scale.

Hahah we had heard a lot about the CGI but we weren't prepared for the Scorpion King 😂 To be fair though, it didn't take away from the movie for us at all, in fact it sorta even added to the charm 😂 You are so correct!! So many love subplots seem to resort to breaking the couple up before they even get together, or just after because... Drama? It would be so much more interesting if we got to see a couple be functional and healthy whilst putting actual conflict in for them to resolve together instead of basing the conflict off of some miscommunication - you know, when one half of the couple overhears the other say or something but it's completely out of context so they decide to not communicate and just break up? This was so refreshing!! We need more on screen couples like this!!

In many ways, I like this film even more than the original. However both were so much fun and a joy to watch just like your reactions to the movies!! I've seen a couple of others mention the third film being bad, and I agree. The biggest problem with the third movie is that they got rid of Rachel Weisz and recast Evie. It felt like there was no chemistry at all between Brandon Frazier and Maria Bello, which made the film feel like it had no heart. That plus the fact that its just not as good of a script doomed the movie. So, probably best to give that film a pass. Regardless though... Thanks for the reaction and keep up the great work as you 2 are amazing!!

This one was definitely what a sequel should be! It kept the elements that worked in the original and expanded on them in such clever ways! Thoroughly enjoyed it! Such a shame from what we’ve gathered not a lot of people that enjoyed these 2 enjoyed the third one. The main thing we keep getting is the fact that they recast Evy and it makes total sense…seeing the chemistry these two had and then taking that away strips the movie from a lot of the things that made it work in the first place. Especially if the script was also not that good. Thank you for your kind words and for the support ❤️

@@OfficialMediaKnights Yeah, the biggest problem with the 3rd movie (from a chemistry standpoint) is kind of hard to explain without spoilers. On the chance that you check it out, even if just on your own, I'll say this... There is something that happens to Rick in the 3rd movie that could have been every bit as emotional as what happens to Evie towards the end of this movie. The fact that there was no chemistry there ruins the moment, which is a shame because it would have been really great to see Rachel Weisz' version of Evy reacting to that scene. I wouldn't be surprised if that is one of the biggest things that cause most (including myself) to dislike the 3rd movie.

Interesting! Goes to show that your actors and the chemistry they built across a few films is everything to an audience that is engaged. Such a shame they decided to move on instead of waiting a little to lock down Rachel Weisz.

I cannot even be upset about what happened to imhotep because he had both of them alive and still was power hungry. She asked him not to go and he still ran in. Man still had his immortality and such. He could have just vanished into the world if he truly wanted to be happy with just her. That man wanted power also.

I feel bad for Anuck Su Na Moon - she killed herself to save him, he let her rot in hell for 3000 years. After his second attempt at resurrecting her he was too obsessed with the book that he let her get stabbed to death again after she called out for him TWICE. She reincarnated to bring HIM back only to get her soul briefly before her life's at risk AGAIN.

Though Imhotep did love Anack su namun, it’s worth noting that, unlike Rick, he asked her to risk her life to come help him. Whereas Rick wanted Evie to save herself and not risk it coming back for him. Imhotep have loved her, but it was selfish love. Rick’s love was selfless.

i remember when i first watched this, i was like: Me: i wondered when Anubis was going to show up. Egypt had some of the coolest Gods: Horus (sun and sky), Anubis (Underworld), Osiris (Dead, afterlife and resurection), Isis (afterlife, wife of Osiris), Sobek (God of the Nile, my personal favourite), Seth (God of Chaos and Storms), Geb (God of the Earth)

I really think Brendan Fraser is a great actor and from what I understand he is like Keanu Reeves a real sweetheart and really cares about the people he works with and seems to get along with pretty much everybody I really feel bad that he was injured so bad making these movies trying to be the acting star but it doesn't seem to have stopped him career-wise and there was a reason that he got a standing ovation at that awards ceremony

Technically, Jonathan was accurate on the sacred "ground" part, since the pygmy didn't touch the ground. And to answer your question, they were Scarab Beetles, the same as were in the sarcophagus in the first one. Still debating whose "love" was more shallow. You seen Rick's reaction seeing the danger coming to him would've been... telling Evie to get out vs. Imhotep, telling Anuk-su-namun telling her to come help him.
