As tanks fill a war-torn cityscape, they are accompanied by a fearsome sight, a third-generation BMPT Terminator following closely behind. The recently introduced tank support vehicle from Russia enters the battlefield, replacing, by some accounts, up to 40 soldiers and six other vehicles.
As it joins the fight, troops are forced to take cover from its twin 30-millimeter cannons, firing hundreds of rounds in a few seconds.
A fortified bunker ahead is quickly eliminated by the remote-controlled missile launcher turret.
Incoming rockets are no match for its ERA or explosive reactive armor on top of its already heavy chassis based on the Soviet T-72 tank.
Armed to the teeth and well armored, the Terminator has reportedly reached the frontlines of Ukraine, though there are rumors it may have found its match in the unlikeliest of enemies…

One thing I've learned from this awful war is all this supposedly invincible technology isn't invincible, especially vehicles. They're big fat targets and vulnerable to infantry, mines, long range artillery and drones. The bigger they are the more lives and money is wasted when they are taken out. If nothing else comes out of this debacle, I hope superpowers who have invested so heavily in these tanks, planes and ships realise the futility of wars where they'll be relied upon.

  • @cheekarp2180

All they learned is that small fast drones are super effective and will be produced in mind boggling numbers for future wars, the tech will also rapidly evolve into killing machines we only read about in sci-fi right now. Also long range precision artillery and missiles have proven effective. But you are right that tanks, short range arty and ships seem a lot less useful. Maybe the tank as we know it is obsolete and will be considered the same we see battleships, they just became useless with the rise of the aircraft carrier.

@@chrishayes5755 drones have their own weaknesses. The Russians have developed some decent jammers and the US army has developed three effective hard kill counters to go along with some amazing jammers. The first is a laser that can kill 32 drones, in clear skies, with no smoke, and given enough time. The second uses conventional explosive rounds but it is hyper accurate. The third basically EMP's everything in within a certain range to kill whole drone swarms at once. I think the laser is a gimmick that might defend HQ units far behind the front lines, the other two are going to become mainstays of our forces.

The few that get close to the Ukrainians seem to self destruct when a Bradley swings is 25mm cannon towards it. They do make a spectacular kaboom able to shatter windows from a fair distance. And 40 Russians and a handful of vehicles lasts less than 15 minutes. Surprisingly about as long as these Terminators. Until some sort of effective defense against modern drones I don't think anything from any country will achieve real combat effectiveness. G'day Dark, Since WW2, military history has repeatedly shown us that there is no such thing as a 'universally protected AFV'. One armoured vehicle can never prevail over every type of threat that can face on the battlefield. The best that can be done is to include a variety of specialist AFVs, with specific functions, together in an composite Armoured Fighting Division. Even then, as we saw, a conventional tank was 'knocked out' while attempting to salvage a damaged BMPT Terminator. Again, as was proven in WW2, the urban environment is the most dangerous battle space for any AFV, although there have been exceptions to this general rule. During both Gulf war’s there were isolated cases of the Abrams M1A1 and A2 MBTs surviving repeated, varied attacks which damaged the vehicles yet protected their crews who lived to fight another day in another Abrams. The comparatively recent introduction of armed drones and small 'top down' missile systems have changed the game by concentrating on what was, for many years, (and still is) the most vulnerable part of nearly every AFV; its upper turret and engine bays. Every AFV design must have engines that can 'breath', also allowing rapid ingress and egress for its crew. 'Full on', heavy armour in these upper sections would demand highly complex designs and construction while substantially increasing the vehicle's weight, fuel consumption and cost. While I hate to pay Putin's forces any compliment, the BMPT Terminator is a good looking AFV and an admirable attempt to achieve the, probably, unachievable. It is good to know that they are, apparently, being knocked out by the Ukrainians while further depleting Russia's resources and military credibility. Finally, Dark, I've got to say that I know you have to 'pay your bills' but, hey, such a long 'commercial' for a computer game is going over the top. I was sorely tempted to 'switch off' as I am sure so many other viewers would have been inclined to do. Cheers and Slava Ukraini! Bill H.
