I appreciate this exercise so much! I am recovering from spinal cord surgery and it really had a negative effect on my dexterity in both hands, it was like learning how to play from scratch.... Though ive been playing both guitar and bass for 37 years... I almost decided to sell off my guitars and basses rather than go through the agony of trying to re-train my brain & hands to reach my pre- surgery abilities especially this late in life (turned 50 in Aug.) Ive since recovered my playing by practising 2 hrs / day and i needed this kind of exercise technique to carry me further and stay inspired. I thank you so much for this one!

Get well man, I like that you didn't give up ❤️
I wish Scott would have mentioned about this being a 1 3 5 7, from the scale out of the modes of C
Best exercise I’ve been shown in quite a while. Thanks for this Scott!!!
Incredibly useful. Learning this increases your capability so much. Especially the descent
What a great one Scott. Fantastic lesson. I definitely need this one. Really enjoying it too.
Hey Scott! I’ve been doing this exercise for years now and I can attest that it truly works wonders with agility and technique. Keep on groovin’!
Awesome exercise, it will help me so much! Thank you, you’re a great teacher.
Thank you SBL ✨ 🙌
6:52 Busted! You said you wouldn't use the B String! Great video by the way, I'm going to try these exercices for sure!

Haha same thoughts actually! It's inevitable to not use the extended range of your instrument ;) feels great
Great exercise. I need to go back to practicing this. Your bass sounds sweet.
So needed! Thank you!

Excellent lesson. It has always been my contention that a dash of reverb makes practising bass so much more appealing and satisfying. This video proves it

Why do you chose to make a big jump to a major third interval on the same string as opposed to the next string?
For some of you guys, you might wanna try out - and might find it easier to start the root C with your middle finger and and play the third E with your index > 5th pinky > 7th ring. I know typical bass hands are root with index but I play bass and all the other guitars basically and that's how I run through these arpeggios on all of them and I have a 6 string bass as well a 4. But of course also work out starting on index too. that's how you really keep your hands fresh and have no limits. work those pinky and ring fingers out lol don't avoid that. your hands will thank you later.
Oooh this is a fun one. To make it challenging, name the chord in your head, play it, think about the seventh, the flat five, or whatever is called for in the chord/arpeggio . If you memorize all that and do this exercise, you'll be an improvisational god in any key.
Good. Very good. Thank u Scott

Thanks for checking out the video dude!
Not sure where I got it from, but one of my warm-up exercises is kind of similar! Starting from C major, I'll go up each scale along the fretboard, then come back down, repeat with the arpeggios, then finish with an alternating pattern eg. 1,3,2,4,3,5,4,6,5,7 then on to the next scale
Great exercise. I like to do this with the major, and then its relative minor using the jazz melodic minor scale (aka melodic minor scale but the same descending as ascending). If I have more time after the major arpeggios I play a jazz blues in that key, then do the melodic minor and then a minor blues in that key.
One of the best exercise 🎉🎉🎉
good exercises.....thanks for the inspiration Scott :-)

WoW!!!! Great
hi, the link to the pdf file isn't working for me. ps: I remember the second exercise from years ago 😅
Quick question for anybody that's tried this or similar exercises: are you aiming for consistency up to a certain BPM or do you just use it to warm up at whatever speed it feels comfortable?
Reverb on the bass? Sounds so beautiful
Scott, and all the other amazing people at SBL. Thank you for the amazing videos! I would love to see you post a video featuring the microtonal bass used by King Gizzard the Lizard Wizard. Seriously check out the album Flying Microtonal Banana. So much fun, but the microtonal bass is hard for my ear to pick up. I would love Scott or Ian to do a breakdown. #1peace1love
Any chance you havr this in tab? I don't read the fence and golf clubs.
SBL member. Playing in a band. Done all the foundation courses. Practice regularly. Nothing like an exercise like this to bring you back down to earth with a bump! Now, how does that descending m7b5 go? 🤣
Thanks Scott. You were using reverb, l'm sure this enabled you to play faster ! 😜

¿Quieres saber saber cuáles cuerdas funcionan mejor? La pregunta sería " What kind of strings work best for my ESP B10? Vale la pena investigar "Scott's Bass Lessons", es buen maestro. Espero que esto le haya servido. Que la pase bien.
Nice Scott but it would be helpful if you labeled these clips Beginner/Intermediate/Advanced. These major scale fingerings I taught in the first week (4 year bachelor of music program). Our students had to know 25 standards just to get accepted into the school, and that is typical of any music school, jazz dept. nowadays.
What brand of bass is that? It's awesome.

Yo! That's an F-Bass BN5 in Butterscotch Yellow 😉💛
I can’t get the PDF download. I’ve followed the link and entered my email address twice but I didn’t receive any email with a download link. It’s not in my junk folder either.
on the Cmaj7 chord i dont get if the "9" represents a "B" or a "F", beacause a thought that in sheet music that would be the "F" but 9 is a "B" right? idk im so confused
@devinebass

Hey Maria - The "9" of the Cmaj7 chord would be a B, make sure to download the free workbook which shows all the tab & notation :) 🙌🏻

@@devinebass oh ok thanks :)
I was not able to download this workbook. I have had an issue with downloading workbooks for quite a long time. It appears to be random - I can download one, and then not be able to download the next two or three. Has anyone else had this issue? It's been happening for quite some time for me.

Hi John - Apologies for the inconvenience here. Would you be able to try the download using a different browser? For some reason certain browsers have issues processing the workbooks, this is something we're working on internally. Failing that if you can reach out to our support team via support@scottsbasslessons.com they'll be happy to help.
What kind of glove is on your left hand is that latex?

Thanks for enquiring about the gloves Scott uses. Unfortunately he has to use them as he suffers from a neurological condition called 'Focal Dystonia'. So... before you run out and buy a pair of black gloves - save yourself the money. If he didn't have to use the gloves he definitely wouldn't be using them. If you do have a similar condition - they are simply tight, thin woolen gloves that you can find in most camping stores or on Amazon. www.amazon.co.uk/EDZ-Merino-Wool-Gloves-Red/dp/B009S4QJOA/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_1?s=sports&ie=UTF8&qid=1375953899&sr=1-1-fkmr0&keywords=woollen+gloves+merino+redl Hope that helps.

I really wish someone could help me with my new five-string. Both the b and the e string sound completely dead... No brightness, no harmonics. They have a dull and pitiful toneless sound that sucks the Joy of having a new hobby out of me. It's an ESP b5e, and I would not have expected it to sound so bad on its low end, but it does, and I can't understand why.
What bass is that?
