I am Canadian and remember the Guy Paul Morin case quite clearly. Even when he was convicted, many of us thought he was innocent. I am glad he got 1.25 million for the 10 years he lost in prison.

⁠@@flyinthebug35”sitting in jail” you make it seem as though it’s the equivalent of just being unemployed at home. This is prison we’re talking about, labelled as a child killer no less. Stripped of freedom and privacy for 10 years, and labelled (wrongly) as a child predator and killer, the worst thing you can be labelled in prison as other inmates are known to never look upon them kindly, and they could be killers themselves. Not to mention the man wasn’t even a criminal beforehand, just an innocent guy suddenly thrown into the ruthless world that is prison. $125k/year is not worth being locked up for 10 years in a highly hostile environment, exacerbated by his child predator and killer label.

The amount of these cases that could've been solved so much sooner were it not for police incompetence or corruption is absolutely infuriating

Agreed. Sometimes I wonder how they even solved crime before DNA and cameras being literally everywhere. So many times I’ve seen the cops just give up if there’s no DNA match or just label all missing persons a “runaway” and go to brunch. Their methods and culture is baffling at best and criminally negligent at worst.

The second case was infuriating. They didn't want to investigate anymore and put all the blame on Guy. Glad his name was cleaned. And the third one was sad and unfair. Rest in peace Kendra. Agreed. I am just glad that he got out and was compensated for it. I once heard of a case in which a person spent around 30-35 years in prison for a crime he didn't commit

Not to mention the absurd trial process he was forced to go through. He had already been deemed innocent, but somehow the prosecutors talked the state into believing the judge "hadn't done a great job explaining 'reasonable doubt,'" so they hauled him back in for another trial... just to have some spineless buffoon convict him of murder based on the fact that she felt he "didn't show enough eye contact?" Are you kidding me? What the hell is wrong with these absolute buffoons?

First, law enforcement frames an innocent man for murder because, once again, they're too damn incompetent to do their jobs correctly... and then, as if that weren't enough, some heartless, brainless, and spineless juror convicts him of killing a young girl because of "a lack of eye contact?" What the hell is wrong with these people?

I didn't want to believe the small town movie stereotypes, but damn it is true. Now that I'm living in one, I can see how and why. Everything spreads like wildfire. It only takes one person with some kind authority or respect to change the entire towns opinion. It's just a matter of days.

I happened to be May’s landlord right after she moved out of the pool house where her mother lived as she was arranging witness protection. She lived in a neighborhood and in conditions where she knew her mother would never venture. The argument about Benji’s will was that her jerk of a mother was going to exclude Mays children who Benji doted on. When I met her May was terrified, but also kind and understanding. She held no real malice toward her mother but knew what she was capable of and just wanted to get away from the situation while ensuring that Benjis wishes were respected. To me she described him as sometimes difficult, not perfect and a bit odd, but that he had grown to love and respect her and her children, something her own mother would never do.

Amazing, what a small world! Thanks so much for the added insight. As unwitting victims of her mother's greed & narcissism, I can't begin to imagine the torment May & her children suffered. Having to live with the fact that your own mother & uncle conspired to have you murdered would be devastating on levels that just can't be described. What a horrifying realization that must have been! The emotional/psychological weight of carrying such knowledge would be immense! In spite of the damage inflicted by her mother, I just hope she's been able to recover & move on; lead a productive, enriched & successful life; and provide a proper, nurturing environment in which to raise her children. Wish her all the best.

Kendra was in several of my university chemistry courses. I didn’t know her well, but I can attest to the fact that she was incredibly smart (she did far better in OChem than I did), very kind, and had an infectious laugh. If the people who know them best say something is wrong and their loved one would not just run off and disappear than maybe the police should listen! I feel like taking money for murder at any time in your life should mean you’re closely watched forever no matter what, Because that woman is unlikely to end up in a situation where she could murder a millionaire husband again but he will very likely end up in a situation where he could accept money to murder a stranger. I’d say her crime was worse, but if we’re talking about public safety he’s the bigger threat

The Jessup case was so poorly handled from the jump. Such a travesty for so many. Especially an innocent man that lost a decade of his life, though compensated, that doesn’t change everything he went through. The fact he was deemed a “child killer” in prison & those inmates have it the worst - as they should - IF actually guilty.

One thing I've noticed in all the interrogations I've watched is that hardly anyone ever asks for a lawyer! I've seen a few where guilty people probably could've walked if they would've stfu and asked for a lawyer. Guilty people seem to always talk their selves into cuffs. It makes no sense especially since they tell you "You have a RIGHT to remain silent, ANYTHING you say can and WILL be used against you!!" Guilty or not the police are not your friend or therapist.

The interrogation ends if they ask for a lawyer so all the times they ask for a lawyer, there is no interrogation so no video.

It’s actually most often a vanity thing in violent crime cases like these. They like the attention and thrive off feeling smarter. However some r just scared and make a bad choice. And the cops use tht against them. As they warned them. Some r overwhelmed and some r just plain stupid. Just watch cop arrest videos. Theres more stupid ppl than you’d think in the world. I’d wager more stupid ppl exist than evil ppl even.

Kendra was my good friend’s cousin, they even look a bit alike. Crazy that one of the crimes on your video deeply effected someone close to me! Thank you for covering it. Glad they caught Brenda, I have some words for her but the victim’s mother did a good job laying into her.

Jesus christ, imagine deciding someone was a murderer based purely on eye contact. And how on earth did clarifying reasonable doubt make a jury *less* likely to acquit?! I think Guy deserves way more than 1.something million for everything he went through. That's barely more than lost income.

I live in Ontario and remember this well. Guy Paul Morin was released and given a paltry 1 million from the Ontario government after spending years in jail known as a child killer. Really sad. Seems like a solid great guy, even Still.

Both absolutely upsetting and mind-boggling that being "weird" is enough to convince investigators that they've got to be the perpetrator. This isn't even the first time I've heard of that being something that was hounded on to try and convict someone. People like that are just the bullies from high school that never grew out of that mindset. To any current police or police-to-be that could be here in the comments section, I hope you take this story to heart and do what you can to prevent this sort of thing during your time as part of the authorities.

1984…when being a young latchkey kid was really not ok. I think we all have near-miss stories and anxiety. Also “dude convicted for lack of eye contact” no. That needs to stop being a thing we judge people on.

I can either look at someone’s eyeballs, worrying if I’m doing it enough but not too much, or not too little, OR I can actually pay attention and hear what someone is saying by finding a focal point and fidgeting with my hands or something. I cannot do both. LOL

I have ASD and eye contact is more than just awkward and uncomfy for me, it’s an outright trauma thanks to a particularly awful teacher I had in my school days who would refuse to let anyone in the classroom and start class until I made eye contact and shook his hand for at least 7 seconds every single day. This did not help the fact I was bullied by every single person in the school (tiny private school, not big public school) and I was often in tears for a couple hours and would spend every waking moment in that day trying to scratch the sensation off my hand til I bled and even then kept going. Now, even as an adult, I go full fight or flight if anyone tries to make eye contact or physical contact with me in any way shape or form for any amount of time, usually flight. That typically takes the form of immediately leaving and locking myself in the nearest bathroom to have a 4 hour panic attack and permanently ghost the person. During the pandemic, I have fully leaned into agoraphobia and have only left the house for therapy and medical appointments for me and my cat for nearly 2 and half years now, and have, quire frankly, done even less than I did before the pandemic. Beyond all that, eye contact in court is actually suspicious behavior. Look at the current case between depp and heard. The abuser is making eye contact with everyone every chance she gets, the victim of her abuse is recalling genuine memories and trying to communicate them effectively. I mean, think of all the times in your life you have been telling a friend or family member about something crazy that happened to you. Where were your eyes? Not making eye contact, I can tell you that much. Now imagine trying to do that in a serious court case, it is suspicious as all get out to be making eye contact in those circumstances. People recalling and communicating memories aren’t going to be making eye contact, it’s not a natural thing for our bodies and brains. People reciting a set of lies and making things up, however, are likely to force eye contact. They will also have a set of lines that will be nearly verbatim every time they say them, and a set of details they cannot keep up with that they keep flip flopping on, as well as mismatched body language. People making eye contact in court, ESPECIALLY TO THE JURY, are displaying highly unnatural and extremely suspicious behavior. TL;DR a judge who bases a guilty verdict off a lack of eye contact should not be a judge, because that is a very basic thing that anybody in a courtroom worth anything knows that MAKING eye contact during a court hearing is the unnatural and suspect behavior.

Because they couldn’t have gotten her back to the States from Mexico if they gave her the death penalty. The video mentioned that. Avoiding the death sentence was the only way she could be tried for the murder at all.

These guys are unique in how they detail the cases while also not wasting time and moving on with the timeline of each case. If more true crime docs were like this, I would probably be more interested.

I have seen several shows about the Ben and Narcy case but this was the first time I've heard the detail about his dad going bankrupt and him possibly being involved in his father's death! But this is always an example of how a fool with money will find the worse woman possible because he's usually looking at the T&A rather than for true love. I'm glad Mae was able to take her mother down. She was truly evil. Narcy HAD to be short for Narcissist

There was a lot more to it especially the part about her daughter’s attempted murder but this gave all of the most relevant parts. So Narcy killed her mother in law, her husband, and tried to have her daughter killed. I think Hulu had a documentary about it. It painted Ben as a little eccentric seeing as he grew up in a hotel and he only had the kids of guests to play with every blue moon.

Okay, the second case really feels less like "a killer blending into society" more like police fucking up and not interviewing him.

The law enforcement knowingly accusing and arresting (innocent man) Guy Paul for murder and having multiple lawyers, forensic analysts and multiple law enforcement officers falsifying evidence and testimonies is absolutely disgusting. They should be sentenced to life in prison or worse. They are supposed to “serve and protect” the community. Absolutely disgusting and a true let down

"Lack of eye contact" that Juror is awful. A lot of antisocial people do not make eye contact because they are just uncomfortable in unfamiliar surroundings.
