Adrian Gonzalez hit over 300 home runs, won four Gold Gloves, and played almost every single game, every single year. So why the heck did no one want to keep him around?

The A-Gon trade may not have worked out for the Padres, but it did work out for the Padres GM. Jed Hoyer targeted Rizzo in that deal because he was involved in scouting him as the Assistant GM in Boston. Then Hoyer left the Padres for the Cubs less than a year after the A-Gon trade, and his first move with the Cubs was to re-acquire Rizzo.
Kenny Lofton was traded 6 times 💥

Lofton had a 68 career war. Sheffield 60. Lofton definitely belongs on this list and was a superstar table setter for most of his career.
You know what's kinda weird, Adrian Gonzalez hit 40 home runs while driving in "just" 99, but a few years later, hit just 18 home runs while driving in 108. That's kinda wild to me

Park/team productivity factors make it a little less wild when you consider how bad and how good some of these teams were, as well as their strange home park dimensions
I love Jolly’s videos. I took about 10 solid years away from following baseball after 2004-2014 and he always covers that particular era.

Life long Dodger fan and Gonzo is still the jersey I wear whenever catching a Dodger game. Was perfect for LA but had he not got injured in ‘17 , we may have not called up Bellinger!! Glad he works for the Dodger TV crew now
@cesarcabrera97

Bellinger was called up before A-Gon hit the IL, and he was playing LF before moving to 1B to cover A-Gon; the way Belly was hitting meant that he was staying in the roster regardless of A-Gon's health. However, Belly's success did make A-Gon expendable after the season, so he was traded, and coincidentally, it opened to door for Max Muncy to be called up the following season.

Gonzalez was amazing during his career, I don't think he's a Hall of Famer but he and Matt Holliday (who you honestly could make a case for him being in the Hall) at least should've gotten more votes on this year's ballot

a gon is one of the most underrated players in the 2000’s and the 2010’s. so consistent and reliable for many years
The Oh Hi Mark cameo was phenomenal.
My favorite player growing up. Those late 2000’s early 10’s padres teams were miserable but A-Gon made going to the park worth it

Would love a Gary Sheffield video. Literally just last night my friends and I were talking about how we miss cool batting stances and we all started imitating the hand motion he would do with the bat while in the box. Also it seems like whenever I watch your videos I'm reminded of how much better hitting was 20 years ago 😢
Red Sox fan here, I was initially ecstatic about the Gonzalez trade, but he didn't quite meet my lofty expectations. While he did put up good numbers, it became apparent (as you said in the video) that he wasn't a great fit in the video. A defining moment for personally was a crazy extra-inning game against Baltimore in 2012 where the Orioles ran out of pitchers and needed to have a position player pitch. Gonzalez came up in a huge spot against him, and...struck out. Just felt like to me at that point like he wasn't a dependable clutch hitter like Ortiz and that perhaps the pressure was getting to him. Nice video by the way, and I like the Mario music at the end!
I thought about Gary Sheffield for the whole video. Then you brought him up as a supplement at the end! Yes, do a video about his story as well.
Great video, I was a huge Sox fan and kid when he got traded there and when he got traded away, easily one of my favorite eras of baseball
I remember the day Gonzo was first put on the IL, it was insane to wrap my head around. Being a Giants fan, I was getting sick of seeing him during the regular season. Then it was just bizarre to see him as a Brave.
Before Boston pulled the trigger for the A-Gon trade, they had a condition that they can negotiate a contract extension with him. They already have the outline for a contract extension and only finalized it during Spring Training (I believe). Also, the trade to the Dodgers were contingent only on A-Gon being part of it.
I remember watching MLB Network around the time of the trade, and they were showing just how many homers he was losing due to Petco. Ironic that he'd never even get to 30 homers again after leaving San Diego.
Love the vids man. You, fuzzy and rgs are like my favourite baseball youtubers. That said I have a sneaky addition. John Olerud also played for 5 teams and while his last 2 teams were well forgotten he still got traded round 5 times I am pretty sure. And I think Many Ramirez was traded 5 times unless I am mistaken and his forgotten Rays stint was just a signing. Also as a mets guy I would love to see you cover Brian Lawrence or other forgotten talents that didn't last long. Cause I feel like the sport doesn't pay homage enough to players who had a sneaky good shortened prime. Whereas someone like Alek Manoah gets covered way to much when he will probably fall under the same tale of a shortened prime with 3-4 good years to boot.
literally my favorite video every week, thanks Jack
Incredibly consistent player it is surprising he got traded as much as he did. Great content as always jolly.
As a Padres fan, this kills me. He was beloved here. Should be a Padres HOFer. It’s a travesty he was lowballed by ownership and basically forced out of town. And then thrived with the Dodgers. Hard to see him as a Padres HOFer now…miss those days.
Oh my gosh Jolly you made a video about my favorite player of all time. THANK YOUU
Really nice QotSA like clockwork poster! Nice content about Gonzales too
I was too young to remember Gonzalez as a Ranger, and definitely don't remember his tenure as a Met. Glad I got a refresher on his great career!
I attended the 3 homer game against Cashner, and it’s a core baseball memory for me! Always loved A-Gon, only wish the Dodgers could’ve gotten him sooner!
Love the fact you've used Soleanna New City so much. One of my favorite songs in that game.
Thanks for tne wonderful content Happy Grape!
When I saw the "5 times" I checked out Gary Sheffield's page and said "yep, this is about him."
UNDERRATED BEAST MAN
Jim Thome was traded 3 or 4 times as well, but a bit more of the Nelson Cruz effect later though.
Shea Hillenbrand I guess was a jackass but I thought his John Gibbons stunt was righteous.
EL TITAN, A GON , MY FATHER Watching this guy was so amazing words can’t explain how much he’s an inspiration for me, my batting stance and even my career love agon to death
As a padres guy! Thank you for showing A-gone some.love
Only three trades, but I was always surprised with how often Greinke switched teams in his prime
A-Gon always reminded me of Ernie from George Lopez
Oh my God AGon was so good. Loved him for the year and change he was on the Red Sox. Thank you for the video Happy Grape :)
Gonzo seemed to always get traded for pieces that helped teams win world series, yet he was a great player that never played in the fall classic
By my count Fred McGriff was traded 4 times and “sold” once (Braves to Rays) and kept up pretty consistent production the whole time. If you find all that interesting I’d love to see a series on the massive trades Randy Smith used to pull off between the Astros and Padres and later when he was GM of the Tigers with both those teams.
One of my immaculate grid heroes
I remember Gonzalez was the first player I remember watching back when the padres had nothing but him and Peavy
Loved the Braves jersey swap.
Everyone loves sheffield definitely do that video
Dodgers legend
Nice Queens poster.
The excited mango strikes again
I hadn’t heard of Adrian Gonzalez until more recently when I found out he went to high school with my aunt and my mom. Then I found out he was a Padre… Then I found out he hit a bomb off my English teacher when they were in high school.

If possible. Please make a video on our third major leaguer from Tijuana. Freddy Sandoval. I gave up the go ahead home run in our little league championship game to him. He is now an author and also played with Adrian in the mexican league and world baseball classic.
Young Adrian Gonzalez looks like the love child of Johnny Damon and Ichiro
The most consistent MVP in MLB 12 the show
Fub Fact: I was at that Red Sox game when they traded Gonzalez to the Dodgers. A lot of people were confused because of the lineups being shown on the screen and then it came out that he was just traded.
Life long dodger. I once sat next to his family at a game and they are the nicest folks ever.
Make a video on Julio Franco please. Man quietly had a top tier career and played forever.
Carlos Delgado only got traded 3 times but still worth noting I think.
Money was literally the only a thing that WASN'T a factor in Soto getting traded to the Padres lol the Nats threw a ton of money at him but with zero player development coming down the pipeline he had no reason to believe the team would be competitive
The name I thought of first when you said players similar to A-Gon that have been traded as often was Dan Haren. Haren is a pitcher, but played at the same time as A-Gon, accrued over 35 bWAR, and was traded 4 times. That's on par w A-Gon when you consider that Haren was an actually productive piece in every trade, even though one was at the end of his career.
“If you have a really good player, do everything in your power to try to keep them” 👀 Pete Alonzo
He was always underrated playing in SD who at the time wasn’t the power franchise they are today. The Boston trade was a big deal at the time and AGon was excellent there but in the end they never won anything with him.
A Gon was almost traded to the Orioles early in his career. Unfortunately, Angelos vetoed the trade.
If we let the best teams draft first we'll have more career team players
Grew up my draft year. What he did in HS was just stupid and he's a nice guy too.
Jose Altuve laughs at the idea of playing for multiple teams

Jolly olive: the choice is yours
You mentioning superstar players more and more unlikely staying as a face of the franchise made me think of my jersey collection. I chose players based on that likelihood and wound up with this Colorado Arenado traded to St. Louis Cleveland Lindor traded to NYM LAD Seager signing with Texas Arizona Goldy traded to St. Louis Atlanta Freeman signed with LAD NYM Degrom hurt and signing with Texas Oakland Chapman going to Toronto Cubs Bryant traded to SF And worst of all Jose Fernandez dying....talk about bad luck
The cheerful cherry does it again!
agon on the dodgers at first was perfecto
What about Curtis Granderson? I feel like he was pretty good overall player and he has played for many many teams
Makes me wish my Brewers locked up Corbin Burnes (who even in just 4 seasons is arguably the greatest Brewers starter in team history, and I mean that) but all will be forgiven if we win it all this year
