The A-Gon trade may not have worked out for the Padres, but it did work out for the Padres GM. Jed Hoyer targeted Rizzo in that deal because he was involved in scouting him as the Assistant GM in Boston. Then Hoyer left the Padres for the Cubs less than a year after the A-Gon trade, and his first move with the Cubs was to re-acquire Rizzo.

Bellinger was called up before A-Gon hit the IL, and he was playing LF before moving to 1B to cover A-Gon; the way Belly was hitting meant that he was staying in the roster regardless of A-Gon's health. However, Belly's success did make A-Gon expendable after the season, so he was traded, and coincidentally, it opened to door for Max Muncy to be called up the following season.

Literally just last night my friends and I were talking about how we miss cool batting stances and we all started imitating the hand motion he would do with the bat while in the box. Also it seems like whenever I watch your videos I'm reminded of how much better hitting was 20 years ago 😢

Red Sox fan here, I was initially ecstatic about the Gonzalez trade, but he didn't quite meet my lofty expectations. While he did put up good numbers, it became apparent (as you said in the video) that he wasn't a great fit in the video. A defining moment for personally was a crazy extra-inning game against Baltimore in 2012 where the Orioles ran out of pitchers and needed to have a position player pitch. Gonzalez came up in a huge spot against him, and...struck out. Just felt like to me at that point like he wasn't a dependable clutch hitter like Ortiz and that perhaps the pressure was getting to him. Nice video by the way, and I like the Mario music at the end!

Before Boston pulled the trigger for the A-Gon trade, they had a condition that they can negotiate a contract extension with him. They already have the outline for a contract extension and only finalized it during Spring Training (I believe). Also, the trade to the Dodgers were contingent only on A-Gon being part of it.

Love the vids man. You, fuzzy and rgs are like my favourite baseball youtubers. That said I have a sneaky addition. John Olerud also played for 5 teams and while his last 2 teams were well forgotten he still got traded round 5 times I am pretty sure. And I think Many Ramirez was traded 5 times unless I am mistaken and his forgotten Rays stint was just a signing. Also as a mets guy I would love to see you cover Brian Lawrence or other forgotten talents that didn't last long. Cause I feel like the sport doesn't pay homage enough to players who had a sneaky good shortened prime. Whereas someone like Alek Manoah gets covered way to much when he will probably fall under the same tale of a shortened prime with 3-4 good years to boot.

The name I thought of first when you said players similar to A-Gon that have been traded as often was Dan Haren. Haren is a pitcher, but played at the same time as A-Gon, accrued over 35 bWAR, and was traded 4 times. That's on par w A-Gon when you consider that Haren was an actually productive piece in every trade, even though one was at the end of his career.
