This and The Road to El Dorado are the type of films I would love to see DreamWorks return to and the closest we have gotten from them is probably their shows like Voltron: Legendary Defender, She-Ra, Carmen San Diego, and Cleopatra In Space with a majority of those containing Avatar and Korra staff who left Nickelodeon after Legend of Korra was cancelled.

I think anyone who grew up Christian or Jewish in the 2000s had this movie as a significant part of their childhood, which still holds a special place even for those of us who aren't religious anymore. An absolute blessing having this masterpiece be a part of what made me who I am

7:13 juxtaposing the mistreatment of slaves and the high-living of their masters works really well for this film. It shows the great divide between them, and it shows the cruelty Moses' adoptive family posses. I have no clue what the critics were smoking when they complained about that intrro because it's not making light of a bad situation - it's driving the point these injustices are horrendous.

Disney gives critics the royal treatment, critics give Disney good reviews, Disney uses the reviews to market their stories. Any critic that's too critical gets blacklisted by Disney.

The movie made more than 200 million back in 1998, was nominated for 2 oscars winning best original song, song that’s still pretty popular and more than 20 years later it spawned a musical play, so how could someone on earth call this magnificent movie a failure?

This movie is still one of the greatest non-Disney features ever made. Hans Zimmer’s score is beautifully haunting, Stephen Schwartz’s songs are absolute bangers (scoring him a 2nd Oscar), the voice cast is beyond excellent & full of heart and of course the animation is stellar; the Red Sea parting alone is still breathtaking

he's not saying the movie itself was a failure, the concept was a failure. if you compare any dreamworks movie to the prince of egypt, no other compares to its ground of seriousness. when shrek was made, it was the game changer for dreamworks. they didn't have to make serious animated movies to be successful.

This is easily Dreamworks best work. I really miss the 90s era animation style that was mixed with computer generated landscapes. It worked so well, I hope they bring it back!

I’m an atheist, hate musicals, and this is hands down one of my favorite animated films. I hold it up there with things like Princess Mononoke, Secret of Kells, Mary and Max, etc of must watch animated films. It really showcases what makes animation so unique and its strengths in storytelling. Its breath of size and use of color are astounding. The scene where they part the Red Sea….seeing it on a large screen is a joy

But she's a hypocrite that never clues into the fact that she should take her own advice. Honestly, if she was cut out of the film and someone else brough Ash*taka to the Lake, I think it would have better. If they went into Lady Eboshi's story and how she became corrupted by power, I think that would have been more interesting.

In my country this movie is a staple during Easter. Everyone knows it, loves it and watches it every year. Is even used as a reference for children to learn biblical stories.

In truth it was historically inaccurate considering the labourers that were contracted to construct these temples and pyramids and all the other construction projects we are highly skilled paid labourers because you needed the equivalent of modern day structural engineers to plan these ambitious buildings together considering you needed a decent grasp of geometry and physics

That is a strange argument I have never heard before. They never said that Egypt was the only one that performed slavery. But slavery was usually done to other nations, so being enslaved had to happen somewhere. In fact, I visited an Egyptian coptic church, and they were very proud of being Egyptian, even claiming that Egypt was blessed by the Bible (they were almost too proud haha). They claimed this based on some Bible verses and how Jesus spent some of his childhood in Egypt to escape genocide.

This and Anastasia were my favorite animated movies of that era. It was geared towards older audiences, who typically don't watch animation. So that was always going to be a tough hill to climb. Comedy is a much easier means of achieving that, thus Shrek's success. Pretty much content kids can enjoy that has humor geared towards adults.

I remember the whale in the Red Sea being such a cool scene as a kid!

It's actually a shark. You can tell by the way it's tail moves. It also has the upside tail fin, like sharks do. Whales and dolphins have their tails the other way.

“Failure”? This was a childhood classic for me! But, I get it now

This movie will forever be in my top list of animated movies. Back then, it was rare to see animation depicting such serious aspects as religion, slavery and human conflict and I think this is what stuck with many people, myself included.

The best DreamWorks picture ever! Imagine if DreamWorks produced an entire animated franchise of biblical Musicals, that would raise the standards for faith entertainment.

Prince of Egypt is an absolute masterpiece. Animation, voice acting, story telling and music score, nothing compares

I would argue that the How to Train Your Dragon series is pretty close to this one tonally. There’s still a level of comedy to it that Egypt doesn’t really have, but those three films could get pretty mature and emotional. Great spiritual successors on DreamWorks’ end, and I hope they continue to make more films in that caliber

I also love The Road to El Dorado but can see why it wasn't embraced, it was mostly to appeal to tween/teen boys, which I was then but most (as well as adults) dismissed traditional animation in general until Shrek was more overt.

Prince of Egypt is a splendid film. I still become emotional listening to the lullaby, the animation is spectacular, and it transcends the need to be religious in order to enjoy the movie. A true masterpiece.

This movie is always broadcasted every year in the Philippines national tv during holy week.

we are the failure

Grew up Roman Catholic and in Catholic schools until college. This was legitimately the only religious movie that I enjoyed because it didn't feel so preachy, like everything else. It's a good movie. End sentence, full stop. Every time our teachers would roll in the mobile TV and VHS stand we begged for this instead of those stupid ass vegetables.

Im 21 years old now and i was raised as a seventh day adventist christian. I remember watching this with my sister growing up so many times we still qoute certain scenes till this day😂. We still have the original dvd till this day so we've been rewatching it at least once every year. May God bless all whoever was responsible for this piece of art cause nothing can be "failed" if God works on it. And hopefully dreamworks pick ups more biblical stories like Christ, Paul, Job or Daniel etc

Job would certainly be step up in demanding the maturity of the audience. It would probably stamp out any kind of child audience, but I still fully agree with you. An animated Job movie would hit hard.

This was one heck of an epic animated film. I watched this with my Mom a year back... And woo! What an experience!

They had this VHS in all the sunday school rooms at my church and wed love watching it while our parents had to do stuff

Here in Israel, this is a household movie. we watch it almost every year at Passover at some point. not to mention the amazing voice of the Israeli singer Ofra Haza, who sang many of the songs in most of the languages. Here, we remember it for the masterpiece it is! and also, the darker and serious tone is quite fitting to Israeli audience - especially now. for us, it is our story.

Can we stop making “failure” synonymous with “not enough profit?” It got made into a stage musical. That sounds successful to me. 🤷🏻‍♂️

How is the box office a problem? Going off of the budget x 2.5 rule, the movie needed $150M to break even. It earned $220M. Huge win, huge award collection. Not a failure in the slightest and a masterpiece we remember

Screw the box office…those first 3… prince of Egypt El Dorado and Joseph were and still are classic

If I have learned anything in history. When you see an underappreciated masterpiece, know that it is not yet time for that piece of art to shine Just look at all the paintings in the museum. They were worth nothing in their time. SO To the all artists, be proud because your name will be remembered in history

@@kernowpictures2002 They followed the perspective of the Israelites who wrote the Torah (later included in the Bible) and highlighted the injustices they suffered. It's just this time the story is told by the people at the bottom not the people at the top so the perspective is focused on how harshly you have to treat a population who outnumbers you when you want to keep them so afraid of the alternative that they will just obey. This is the only way to keep a population of free labour to make your society wealthy. Ancient societies relied almost entirely on manpower to improve their economy so the larger the workforce and the less you had to pay them the more wealth you have in your economy. If you're not motivating your workers with the promise of reward (pay) you must be motivating them with fear of punishment which has to be worse than the alternative.

My five year old daughter LOVES this movie! She loves the emotional tension between the characters and the ethereal and sometimes eerie music.

Prince of Egypt is AMAZING and still holds up!

When You Believe is DreamWorks’s answer to When You Wish Upon a Star.

I still remember the time I watched it for the first time as a kid in 1999. I just got home from my very first day at school, and my parents gave me the cassette as a gift. I was shocked back then, and I absolutely loved this movie. As I do now, as I will forever. What a masterpiece in every way it is!

The Prince of Egypt gives me chills in half of the scenes. The music and artistry is incredible

This and Joseph king of dreams are two fantastic masterpieces. They are beautifully done, and I love them both.

I saw this movie in the theater when I was 9 years old. I was absolutely blown away. Not just by the production value and the music, both of which were amazing. But I knew the story from Sunday school, and while there were differences, this was the first Bible story adaptation that I had seen that didn’t feel like it was talking down to me. It felt like it was aimed at kids, but also didn’t seem to shy away from the tougher parts of the story.

What a perfect time for you to post this I’ve been obsessing over this movie for the last week after remembering it exists

I first saw it as a kid, I remember I was blown away by the story and animation, and it stayed with me well into adulthood.

It made a profit saying it's a failure is a stretch, I doubt even Katzenberg would consider it a "failure".

Yeah I don't think Katzenberg really expected that it would suddenly change 40-50 year old perceptions and expectations of animation, it didn't majorly stand out as Shrek or Finding Nemo later did but it was at least considered good solid start for new rival animation studio.

Prince of Egypt is my all time favorite animated film. It simultaneously speaks to my faith and my inner child.

its crazy to think there was a time in hollywood where a biblical film could even get a nomination , let alone an award.

​@@trikyy7238 Not exactly. There were multiple consultants who weren't Jewish who sorted out the theology in the film. Unless you mean the studios who were supporting it?

My cousin worked on this movie. I was so proud

It definitely didn't fail, we watch it every year and the cast is amazing!

Prince of Egypt: *Fails to complete with Disney* Shrek: "Fine, I'll do it myself..."

Not to mention in 2017, Prince of Egypt the musical started. So now more than ever, the Prince of Egypt is seeing a resurgence :)

I loved this movie so much, the animation style was beautiful and the soundtrack was gorgeous,. It was an extremely bold move for a new studio to start off their career with a religious film.

This movie makes me cry purely by it's grandeur. It's absolutely a spectacle for anyone lucky enough to see it. The animation is exquisite and every single song is a banger.

I realized recently why animation with a movie length budget looks SO impressive, they're able to refine stuff and get such good quality that it almost looks like a painting come to life, it's a really cool effect

The late 90's and early 2000's really gave us some underrated gems a la the Prince of Egypt, The Iron Giant, Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Treasure Planet etc.. Man, I miss this era of predominantly 2D animation with measured CGI usage. And then CGI completely took over with its ease of use, and corporations got greedy.

I love that this movie painted Moses and Ramses as best friends. Every other ad patient paints them as bitter rivals and enemies and you end up rooting for Egypt's fall. But this tugs at your heart and makes it all the more tragic!

This is one of my all time favorite movies

I remember watching this for the first time on Cartoon Network during Easter weekend. That won't happen on CN ever again.

Prince of Egypt was perfect...my favorite animated movie growing up.

When my friends dad saw it and we asked how it was he said “very tan”

The animation, songs, and story were beautifully done. Still one of my all time fave animations (Emperor's New Groove is another)

This movie will always be a SSS Tier animated movie

To this day, I'm still so glad that my child self randomly picked up this movie at a video store. A truly gorgeous film, much like Disney's Treasure Planet.

Treasure Planet, Iron Giant and Prince of Egypt are the flops that I still rewatch to this day. All of them are underrated

The art, music, and script of this movie is timeless!! Loved it as a kid and love it now as an adult

This movie still holds up in 2024 so darn well.

That's an insane take. Critically acclaimed, a commercial success, still loved decades later. What more do you want?

It's almost like letting an egomanical lunivtic create a studio out of sheer spite and then constantly trying to copy what your opponent is doing is not the best way to be creative and appear unique and surpass them

Just watched the 4K version - it's very awesome. Even the background paintings look amazing.

This film will always have a special place in my heart. As a lover of film and someone who has studied and created film, The Prince of Egypt was the first film I ever went to see at the cinema. It kick started my love of the movie going experience, so although it may have failed on its original mission, to me, it is an incredible success of what the medium can be.

WATCH THE FULL VIDEO…He’s not saying the movie was a failure. Probably not the best title tho!!!

I freaking love this movie!! It's so good! I was a little too young to appreciate it in theaters, but on VHS i watched it constantly

The Prince of Egypt has underestimated competition with Balto.

Any movie that becomes a Broadway adaptation is successful in my book. The soundtrack is GOLD.

This was so good! See the awful live-action version Gods of Egypt. Not the worst movie but not the best

I've only watched this movie a couple times, and I remember not understanding much of it's themes as a kid, but I remember that I've loved this movie back then

Love your channel, so thank you for reviewing one of my favorite animation classics of all time. Prince of Egypt got a special place in my heart for a number of reasons, but it think the most notable one is it really treats the viewer as an adult and it transcends beyond time because it take a biblical story and make it layered so perfectly there is no chance in the world you won't be invested in it. Bloody hell, now I'm going to watch it on my 1000th time for Passover.
