The Most RUTHLESS Church Father and Why He's Important
St. Jerome- God’s Crotchety Saint
History tells us that Jerome had a nasty temper, not to mention being strong-willed. He complained and quarreled with a bunch of other Fathers, including St. Ambrose, St. Augustine, and St. John Chrysostom. He even accused Augustine, arguably the greatest Father of all, of being proud, insincere, and conniving. One of his quarrels even resulted in a brief excommunication.
However, like all saints Jerome wanted to be holy more than anything else. So he often fasted and prayed for strength to overcome his faults. St. Jerome's personality is, ironically one of the traits that makes him so endearing. But it's his biblical scholarship that makes him legendary.
Jerome spent years studying the Sacred Scripture under the empire's greatest Scripture scholars. And while living in Rome, Jerome became a trusted aide to Pope Damasus the First, who commissioned him to make a new, more accurate, translation of the Scriptures.
Not long after Athanasius made his canonical list in 367AD, St. Jerome began correcting the Latin translation of the four Gospels. Then, in 390, he began translating the Old Testament into Latin, the language of most of the Christians of the Roman Empire. We call this Latin translation the Vulgate.
Jerome eventually set up a monastic community in Bethlehem, where he continued translating and writing extensively. He was already a master of Greek, but he learned Hebrew from Jewish teachers in the Holy Land. And it was those teachers who led him to question whether the Church should retain the Old Testament books that the Jewish rabbis had rejected in their list of the canon.
But in 393, while Jerome was still in the midst of his massive translation project, a synod met in the North African city of Hippo where St. Augustine was bishop. The synod declared the 46 books of the Old Testament and the 27 books of the New Testament as the official canon. A later synod in Carthage in 397 A.D. said the same thing. Then, Pope Innocent I confirmed the list in 405.

My favorite of his writings and perhaps of all the Church fathers is his introduction to his refutation of Helvidius which concludes with “Helvidius who has not yet learnt to speak will at last learn to hold his tongue “. Maybe too harsh?….. but he was defending the honor of Our Lady.
A tribute to St Jerome for overcoming all the obstacles to get the Word out to all.🀄
He is also the saint we need to clean up the many sins in the hierarchy now. St. Jerome, pray for us!

I watched the video series “The Bible and the Church Fathers” from St. Paul Center (this video is a clip from it) it comes with a workbook and then the text that accompanies it is that one. It’s all really great info!

I love St Jerome. He didn't suffer fools gladly and yet was very sympathetic to women friends he had. His letters to them are very interesting reading. He was loved by them and maintained a high moral standard all his life.

Never quote anyone , even Peter was rebuked by Paul . Peter was not perfect, Paul admitted he was the least of the apostles.

Ambitious, too. Quasten says Jerome expected to succeed St Damasus as Pope. In open-air preaching at Speakers Corner and in apologetics work, I find Jerome to be the premier Father to whom protestants seek to appeal when challenging us on the Deuterocanon. Not his fault, of course.

Isn’t Jerome the saint who went to the Pharisees for the Old Testament cannon ? Pharisees were apostate and not following the commandments of the Lord according to Jesus himself. The true keepers of the law and scripture were exiled. The Levites specifically the line of Aaron were to be high priests and the line of Judah was to rule. This was not the case during this time period which makes them apostates. The high priests (line of Aaron) wouldn’t change or allow the Hellenistic views in so they were exiled and the Pharisees and Sadducee’s were put in charge as was Herod who was not from the davidic lineage or even a descendant of Judah. Zachariah was a high priest most probably of the line of Aaron as Gabriel spoke to him in the temple and sent his 5 year old son John (the baptist) to live in the desert. Where John preached was only a couple miles from Qumran, odd?? No where in the dead seas scrolls do you ever see the word essene. Why is that? Because they were not essenes they were the exiled high priests and that is how they refer to themselves in the Dead Sea scrolls. John the Baptist was sent to the dessert to live with the exiled priests were he learned the true commandments and law of the Lord to prepare the way. Seek and you shall find.

Worst translator, he clearly didn’t have the Holy Spirit because he fooled Catholics for a thousand years that Moses had horns 😂
