The Most Powerful Steam Locomotives - Yorkshire Dales Model Railway

Ойын-сауық

The Most Powerful Steam Locomotives
I give my five biggest and most powerful express and mixed-traffic locomotives a run this week. I also finished the station building, goods shed, signal box and station signs for the new layout, but that’s for a future video!
Locomotives featured include:
46256 LMS Princess Coronation 4-6-2 (Hornby)
70007 BR Standard Class 7MT 4-6-2 (Hornby)
60862 LNER V2 2-6-2 (Bachmann)
6029 King Class ‘King Edward VIII’ 4-6-0 (Hornby)
34081 Battle of Britain Class ‘92 Squadron’ 4-6-2 (Hornby)
As always, thanks for watching.

    Great one Lewis, I enjoyed seeing Britain's finest on display. Missing was a 9F but no complaints. The star for me was the V2, a loco not designed to be amongst the most powerful but which proved more than adequate for it's designed purpose and capable of a stellar performance when filling in on express services. A few more inches in drive wheel diameter and they would have taken their place among the race horses. Regards, David.

    Nice theme this week, and delightfull video as usual. Good idea to have put a V2 and a 4-60 with the 4-6-2, it is a variation on the theme well chosen. On a modelist point of view, I am appaled by the use of fixed axle and flangeleess wheels on all the Hornby 4-6-2 for the rear truck. Can't they do a proprer truck on a real front pivot for those engines ? Even the sliding axle of the Bachmann V2 is better ! That is what prevents me from buying a Britannia and a Battle of Britain, what a pity ! About the V2, the new one announced for the end of the year is, uh, a little pricy : GBP 195 at Rails of Sheffield, to give you an indication. I really hesistate because it would be a great engine in LNER guise on my layout.

  • @MouldyRaspberry

    @MouldyRaspberry

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thanks Olivier. I completely get that. Strangely my BoB doesn’t actually have the fixed axle like the Britannia and the Coronation do. I’m not sure why they didn’t use that same design on the later two. You’re right though, the V2 is better. The new ones are sure expensive, but I really like the look of the BR back version!

    Lewis, what follows is not a criticism of your excellent model layout. Nor, even of your impressive investment, even burgeoning plethora, of your vast range of model locomotives and rolling stock, that entertains me and weekly watchers of your YT channel. Neither am I a ‘rivet counter’ in connection with modelling and models. But todays entertaining episode also made me think. Whilst the scale 1:1 Coronation Princess Pacific’s were undoubtedly powerful, they were either classified as 7P (LMS) or 8P (when absorbed into British Rail). So, to see ‘Sir William Stanier’ 46257, a model of the only example of the class directly introduced into service ‘post nationalisation’ (your model also displaying a BR badge on the tender), to be hauling goods traffic - rather than a rake of passenger coaches was well below the lofty aspirations of the designer(s) and most known practice. I acknowledge that you had a BR Standard class 7MT, 70007, named ‘Coeur de Leon’, drawing the other goods consist in todays’ show. On a similar bent, your excellent rake of Bulleid Southern coaches looked out of place, when attached to the ‘LNER’ V2 that was carrying the telltale sign of BR ownership. Meanwhile the Bullied designed ‘Battle of Britain’ class of Light Pacific ‘Spam Can’ would be more at home with the Southern coaches - than the mixture attached. You know that I thoroughly enjoy your productions and your work and effort in sharing. Your Yorkshire Dales Model Railway today literally exceeded my recollection of the mixture & inter-regional exchanges seen on the SDJR, at Bath Green Park, in my youth. Keep up the good work and entertainment. Peter

  • @MouldyRaspberry

    @MouldyRaspberry

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thank you Peter, always appreciate it. That’s an interesting point about the Princess Coronation. From videos/photos I’ve seen they were sometimes used on parcels/fitted freight workings (regardless of what Sir William thought!). Some good photos of them working those services below, but as you say those jobs were surely below what he intended for them! pin.it/zusoAzy pin.it/301kpXw www.national-preservation.com/threads/stanier-princess-coronation-class-b-r-era-46251-46252.1291473/ Another interesting (and very true) point about the mix of locos and stock. My thinking has always been, if I’m going to run huge express passenger locos on a little branchline, or Southern Bullied Pacific’s and GWR pannier tanks in Yorkshire, then it almost seems a bit nonsensical to draw the line at mixing carriages and locos that wouldn’t have run together! I guess I get tired of running the same locos with the same coaches, and like to change it up! You’re spot on though, it does almost feel like the SDJR with all this going on! Thanks again 👍🏻

  • @Pjs75

    Lewis, I knew that you’d have researched the options. Obviously, once the Coronation/Princess class couldn’t run the Expresses London to Scotland, particularly when their height precluded use under catenary, they were at a loose end. In the last days of steam, on the mainline, they were just trying to use whatever was available as the older stuff, pre-war, was worn out from overuse... how the mighty are fallen. From late 1930’s streamlined star, diminished to 1960’s parcel van puller. All in 30 years. Some of them were hardly ‘run-in’, compared to turn of the century stuff. Enjoyed the links to the pics. thanks as always. Peter

    ¡Hola buenas tardes Lewis! Wow - soundtrack was brilliant today. Had the headphones on and, short of the smell of hot steam and, smoke, it was real! My favourite shots were at 9:45, emerging from the tunnel and 10:25, racing through Buckdale, with the camera view overlooking the coal yard and station. How's the planned additions coming along? As ever, stay safe and well Un saludo. Gary

    Thanks Gary, glad you liked the sounds. It’s going well, I’ve been working on the buildings but have tried a few laser cut kits this time rather than plastic. Pleased with them though. I adapted one of the spare signs you sent me with the new station name so that’s ready to go as well! Hope all is well with you.

    Hi Lewis, Always late to the show me, so I sat watching your latest wonderful video over breakfast this morning. You have a great line up of motive power there...........Was it deliberate to have one loco from each region plus BR or just accidental? The Ivatt pacific looks amazing, even though I prefer ECML steam, V2 V2 V2 snap out of it Dave!!!!!!...........I wondwered as well how you imagine the layout, as a BR line operating in different regions or as a preserved line running anything, I'm just curious? I was going to ask as well what your next project will be layout wise, but reading the comments it seems you have a new project, so I guess that kind of answers that? Anyway, great video, look forward to next week. Best regards Dave.

  • @MouldyRaspberry

    @MouldyRaspberry

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Dave - accidental, but I guess that worked out well! I guess as a BR line, although I’ve not worked out a justification for all the inter regional trains yet! I suppose I almost run it as a heritage line every now and then as well. The new project is a separate layout, which will be a end to end terminus station. Almost a continuation of this layout though, or at least I’ll try and film it so it looks like part of this layout.

    What a splendid mix of locomotives, my favourite in this line was joint between The V2 and The Coronation. Very well done and can't wait to see more. By the way do you now what the yellow strip on the side of some steam locomotive cabs mean? I know it has something to with electrification but I'm unsure. Regards FSS

    Thank you. I love the V2 as well. Someone will know much more about this than me, but I think you’re right - the yellow stripe in the late 1960’s meant the locomotive couldn’t work any further south than Crewe due to the electrified lines.

    The Merchant Navy Southern engine is the most powerful of that kind. The Battle of Britain Spam Can is nowhere near as strong. I'm very disappointed in you for not showing off Mallard. She's the most powerful LNER engine of the lot. The V2 is strong, yet she'll never match the power of the A4.

    Try playing these mouldy raspberry videos on an iPad or phone while running trains. It is possible to coordinate some video with real oo trains and simulate a sound layout. However 🎉non coordination can still fill the room with railway sound and the eyes and ears can be fooled into believing those trains running are making the sound. Every now and again a minute or two will be coordinated for more pleasure, so, what the hell! Tryitout. Alan Rowlands
