A Full Trip on the Yorkshire Dales Model Railway

Ойын-сауық

This week marks the first full return trip on the extended Yorkshire Dales Model Railway.

One of the best layouts on KZread I watch... Less is more I think for model railways. Too many try to cram too much track and buildings in. Fantastic that you have lots of long space so no need for tight corners and you haven't filled it with too many tracks and busy scenes. Lots of nice open space and single line working 👍

I like the way the railway is very clearly the same railway (consistent) all the way along. The same Civil Engineer, the same Station Architect, the same Track Gangers, common ruling speed limits and grades… the same types of farming. It’s subtle, but the consistency is what’s so convincing.

Congratulations! The very best model railway I have ever seen; an amazing job, Have been watching you for some time (saw you first with Andrew Ditton) and am so pleased you have now "completed" the project (yes I know - never complete). This takes me back to the inter-war and post-war years and the era of Mr Herriott in "All Creatures Great & Small". Love the narrowboat addition. A labour of love; a thing of beauty and a work of art, plus a deeply fascinating and nostalgic piece. Excellence way-beyond my expectations of what is possible.

Nice variation the "bunker first running" you show us here. It was prototypical in situations like the one in your layout (no tank engine available/suitable and no turntable at the station), and it adds a nice variety in you layout's exploitation. I have noticed that british modellers had invented the art of terminus station in model trains, I love it, and not only for practical reasons ! You can get something very lively and nice on a small surface and with a basic budget for the trackplan. And it have this specific touch british modellers have developped and cultivated through the years. For your end station, you made it with nice and specific personal touches that are unique. Always worth the show, even for just sit, relax, and watch the trains go by.

  • @MouldyRaspberry

Thanks Olivier, appreciate it. I never thought of terminus stations being a British thing, but thinking about it you’re right, I haven’t seen too many continental/American terminus layouts. Maybe it’s because we had so such a dense network of branch lines here, maybe they were more common.

Absolutely stunning job - looks fantastic. Slightly sticky chassis on the 5 - more running in or a gauging or perhaps quartering issue? I have a few stunning locos which are a little 'sticky', but my 5 isn't one of them - super smooth and perhaps the quietest locomotive I have as well. Brilliant and thanks for sharing. Al.

Thanks Al, appreciate it. Yes you’re right. Funnily enough I stripped it down yesterday to see if I could sort it. Seemed to be something with the gears that were a bit stiff/tight in the chassis, but I didn’t have any luck fixing it. I’ve had three black fives over the years and they’ve all been like that! I must have just got three duds because many people have no issues, like you!

@@MouldyRaspberry I've one of those R2323 '5000' LMS ones and have 'created' my own drains as well - real stunner. The one I have which 'sticks' is my 70k Britannia - even fitted a Westinghouse pump to the front. Straight 'out of the box' it's sticky at slow departures until 'a certain speed' then its super smooth - and fast if needed. After a while it seems to smooth out ... put back into storage, then removed again, it's the same - just one of those things. Some you just have to live with, or spend days. I've not given up on the Brit - I suspect several things - perhaps it's binding valvegear, perhaps its inconsistent moulding of the gears, perhaps .... one day!!

Truly stunning! Do you have a camera small enough to fit through the tunnels if strapped to a wagon? That would make for an awesome video!

Thanks! I got a cheap Chinese GoPro from eBay that made it through the tunnels but it was a bit too dark in my loft for it to get a decent picture. It might work on the new layout though as it’s much brighter - worth a shot!

Oh how cool to show both layouts in the one train trip. So I have to ask, did you move the new layout into the attic or bring the train down to the new layout....................If so I should watch the video again to check you marshalled the coaches the same on both layouts! Great video as always and another brilliant idea. All the best Dave.

Then it may be time to subtly hint to wife and family (if any) that they need to move along...you will be foreclosing shortly upon their allotted living space to add to your miniature world! I trust they will endure eviction in good spirits, as is only right! Someone will have a spare room where you can stay when you get tossed out.
