The Most Powerful Handgun Round Vs Human

In today's video we look at the most powerful production pistol round in the world, the 500 S&W. Typically this round is used for self defense against large animals in the back country but today we'll be trying it on ballistic dummy torsos.

If you think about it. That 4 bore of his gives off 200lbs of felt recoil. If he wasn't as big of a guy and I don't mean that in a bad way, he's just taller than average and built. But anyone less than 200 lbs would have a hard time shooting that. A 3.5 inch 12gauge has 62 lbs. of felt recoil for reference. It's insane to really think about. Even crazier thing is I did some research on how much those 4 bores and ammo go for and I almost died on spot seeing those numbers.

The “dad advice” you guys give has opened my eyes more than any advice from my real dad, my football and wrestling coaches, or my sergeants in the Army. As a father, who works as an x-ray technologist 12+ hour shifts 3-5 days a week, the last episodes hit me hard. “The only people who will remember all your overtime is your kids.” I may have 100% VA compensation and a decent-paying job, but even myself being 29 times, are tough. Yet I realized my kids don’t have me around as often, and with a third on the way, I decided to change that. I may not have real money in the bank or a very popular KZread channel with sponsors making me able to work my hours and afford all the nice guns and things I want, but I at least do what I can for my wife and kids. I know Garand Thumb most likely won't read this, but I want you and the guys to understand your content has helped me to step back and view my life and goals with just the dad's advice alone. Again, thank you guys for all the workand content. And from one vet to another, thank you for your service!

John Ross (RIP), author of the absolutely EPIC gun-culture novel "Unintended Consequences", and who has his own limited edition run of S&W 500s (Google it if you dont believe me) was probably the first, and maybe the only, guy to ever consistently carry a 500 concealed. When S&W first released the 500 he had a gunsmith cut down TWO of them to snubby length (2", or maybe 3", I forget), and he carried that matched pair (BOTH of them at the same time!) in a Thunderwear holster. I have personally witnessed this, and held one of them in my own two hands. Later, he developed a handload for the 500 with a *700* gr flat nose solid bullet. I once shot one cylinder of some of his personal, HOT, handloads thru a 6" 500, and darn near broke my wrists (or at least it sure felt that way at the time). His philosophy was "carry the biggest gun that you can shoot effectively, and for him that was the S&W 500. Needless to say, anyone that would have been insane enough to endanger his life would have been obliterated like this ballistic dummy.

Surprisingly the recoil impulse is not terribly different when firing .454 compared to .460 polymer tip from Hornady. Last time I brought it to the range the ammo went from $35 for twenty to $97.65... Thanks inflation.

The weird thing is that 500 S&W was one of the first things I shot and... maybe my grip wasn't great? But the high bore axis on revolvers means it mostly flips rather than punishing you, and it was a pretty heavy gun to begin with so... actually didn't hurt at all. Unlike my friend's XDS in 9mm. Now with a decade of experience shooting I wanna go back and shoot it again and see if it hurts more lol.

First gun I ever fired was a 500 mag with an 8" barrel. The concussion broke the mounting points for the plexiglass windows at the range lol.

Oh lord....that recoil must have suuuuuucked. Usually you feel more recoil with longer barrels on these revolvers. Granted my S&W Model 29 has a 8 3/8" barrel and I don't find it terrible at all.

@@jacksonthompson7099 it was gnarly, I fired 20 shots and by the last round my hand was sore and it actually bruised my trigger finger through the trigger lol.

@@jacksonthompson7099It’s actually not as bad as you think. I have the 8 3/8” 500 magnum and recoil is fairly tame given the ft lbs headed down range. I’ve heard the 2” and 4” version are much stouter in the recoil department.
