    I have to say your slow mo footage shows a very good example as to why you would want to start with one round in the cylinder for beginners on these big bore guns. That “consistent hold” of the trigger back when riding the recoil is demonstrated easily to see and understand. Awesome educational video!

  • @nickverbree
    @nickverbree Жыл бұрын

    10:03 moments exactly like this are why this channel is so important for so many things. Imagine being an animator or VFX artist and having this as a resource for making hyper realistic gunshot effects. Or being an ammunition supplier and seeing what the rounds hitting different mediums do and having an AHA moment and figuring out some way to design better munitions. The fact that he keeps it goofy keeps enough of us in love with it so that it's at all feasible to do.

    My ex father in law had a S&W .500 MAG with the 3" barrel. We loaded many dif rounds for it. We've shot it each well over 1k rounds. We LOVED it ! We were shooting pretty accurate at 70 yards once used to the recoil without the anticipation of its power. Our buddies would always back out from shooting. Limitless America in Washugal, WA has the exact same gun. Used for $1149. I've been looking for every excuse not to get it but after watching this then, I'm getting up early to go get it tomorrow! Our loads where Star line brass, cci large rifle primers, hot loads where 54.2 grain or 52.4 grain of Unique or Hodge 110 powder and light loads where 46.2 to 48 grain powder. Bullets where always Hornady XTP 350 grain. I'm so excited to go get this thing tomorrow that I'm not sure I'll sleep tonight! Awesome vids as always brother! Keep them coming!

    It depends on the bullet. LOTS of bullets expand at subsonic speeds, but these were clearly not designed for that. Since most .50 bullets are intended for .50 AE and .500 Magnum, which throw 350-grainers at 1300+ and 1800+ fps respectively, using these bullets in the subsonic Special was either lazy or stupid on the ammo maker's part.

    It's one of the most versatile rounds, there's rounds that are more manageable than others that don't seem like extreme overkill for certain applications, but some pack enough punch to take down a bull, they're no joke. 45 ACP is still going to be best for use against humans overall for most people but definitely isn't nearly enough for other applications. I suppose a gun that can fire 45 Colt, 454 Casull, and 410 is going to be more versatile yet if I could only have one handgun.

    If you're using bullets designed for the 500 magnum in the 500 special loading that's probably why you're seeing so little energy transfer. Those bullets are designed to expand at 1,500 fps, not 1,000 fps. Same sort of thing happens with 10mm auto, most loadings use bullets designed for the much more popular .40 s&w, and the extra speed causes much less controlled expansion. Anyway since the .500 special is so uncommon I'm betting that they just used a bullet designed with .500 magnum velocities in mind.

    I initially assumed that .500 Special would be equivalent to .454 Casull. Nope. .454 will launch a 360-grain bullet at 1400-1500 fps, halfway between the .500 special and .500 magnum with 350-grainers. .50 AE does 350 grains at 1300-1400 fps. Standard-pressure .44 magnum fires a 355-grain bullet at 950-1050 fps, so .500 Special is right on par with .44 magnum. The problem is that those bullets were clearly made to expand at supersonic velocities like you get from .50 AE and .500 Magnum, so the .500 Special just couldn't make them pop. Bad design on the manufacturer's part.

    The .500 Special is basically a fatter Colt .45, about same muzzle velocity but with a projectile that's ~50gr heavier. I've always liked it, it won't blow out your ears on the range, and for target shooting up to 20 yards you really can't tell a difference in accuracy, except there's >50% less recoil and you can get away with using regular safety muffs w/o plugs.

  • @Bacteriophagebs

    Standard-pressure .44 magnum fires a 355-grain bullet at 950-1050 fps, so .500 Special is right on par with .44 magnum. .45 Colt +P is almost exactly the same as .44 Magnum, and you can get 360-grain loads that go 1100+ fps. Regular .45 Colt is the same as .45 ACP and will only throw 230 grains at under 1100 fps. The problem is that those bullets were clearly made to expand at supersonic velocities like you get from .50 AE and .500 Magnum, so the .500 Special just couldn't make them pop. Bad design on the manufacturer's part, but I doubt there are any .50 bullets made for such low velocities on the market.
