The Most Neglected Reptile in the Pet Trade

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Turtles and tortoises are one of the most common animals people buy, adopt or find for their home, but I would argue they end up with some of the worst treatment of any reptile in the pet trade. From their long lifespans to hardy lifestyles and misunderstanding of care, today I go over all the details. I also show where I'm housing my red eared slider, Franklin in my current home.

It's sad to see people not care because they're just small animals. Hermit crabs slowly get poisoned and suffocate to death, either because they aren't given water to fully submerge themselves, or they are given those horrible painted shells. Goldfish can live upwards of two decades, but because people keep them in tiny bowls they end up dying in a week.

@thecasualtrollingpuma Goldfish need 20 gals for the first fish, 10gal for every added on fish (fancy goldfish) and 50 gal per fish for the other type. And they need filters 2x the size tank they're in. Bettas need a 5+ tank and don't need as strong of a filter. Goldfish are more abuses than bettas although both have it bad.

Hermit crabs join the battle as the secret fourth member! You can get them for five bucks some places here, nice man at petco says they’ll do fine together on aquarium rocks with a water dish and some hermit crab kibble and nothing else when in reality they need a few inches of substrate to burrow, and places to climb, and hides, and both freshwater and saltwater and really high humidity or else they’ll choke to death, painted shells poison them, too many in one tank leads to fighting, not enough food leads to fighting, each one likes different food and it’s a total pain (ive never had one that likes the processed kibble stuff) Cherry on top? Every single one is wild caught because they have yet to be bred in captivity! Hermit crabs are cool, but also I don’t recommend them because they’re a lot of maintenance (and cleaning, lots of cleaning)

Hamsters are probably the most neglected pet I know of. People keep them in those dumb crittertrail enclosures with no enrichment and shitty food, which is the exact opposite of how they should be kept. Ideally one should have a custom built enclosure for a hamster as they're actually rather mobile.

@@moekitsune You and brianna have a point but similar happens to hermit crabs They’re sold at tourist traps in a lot of tropical and subtropical places, as well as some pet stores, for dirt cheap prices and put in tiny little plastic carrying cages less than a foot long with nothing but multicolored aquarium pebbles and a single water/food dish (Obviously there’s exceptions and a lot of factors can lead to their deaths but I have seen that stuff being sold in a tourist trap). As a result they usually die within a few weeks to a few months, when in the wild some can live 30 years (it varies wildly). It’s *possible* to have hermit crabs live that long in captivity but extremely difficult since they’re pretty high maintenance Goldfish/Bettas 🤝 Hermit Crabs 🤝 Hamsters (honestly most rodents) 🤝 Turtles Garbage care leading to premature deaths or permanent disfiguration

But a less justifiable charge is monthly pet rent that will charge 25-50 extra dollars for every pet you own.

@@rociosilverroot2261 thats crazy. Here in Germany the law basically states that landlord doesnt have any right to control/know about what a tenant does within the apartment. They have to be told about dogs (and cats if its more than 1/2) beforehand but they can only deny them if someone who lives in the house has a severe allergy/phobia and only that person can order that. Not the landlord. With smaller animals (so all rodents, reptiles and aquatic animals) the landlord doesn't even have the right to know about them. And no pet fees/extra rent... only in some cases with very large dogs or dogs with a certain history they can make the tenant get extra insurance incase the dog damages anything.

My parents bought a sulcata tortoise at a reptile convention when I was a kid (for reference this was probably around 1998-2000) They had no idea how big she would get. The convention was selling them as tiny babies in small plastic containers. We named her Max, because for a long time we weren’t sure whether she was male or female. Eventually she got way too big for a tank and we just turned our sun room into a big enclosure for her. She loved spinach and strawberries the best. We would also take her outside where she had a fenced in area. We had her for years until she got too big for us to legally keep her, and my dad found a lady that cares for them in Florida so he drove down there with her and left her with the lady. We still get pictures and updates from the lady and max is doing great and is super healthy, but she is now an enormous dinosaur 🐢

You can pass an animal in a store and think it's cute and realize that you can't have it. Or that you don't want to put in the work becuase you aren't interested in them. That's how I look at it. This is _so incredibly true._ Somehow people assume that turtles are "easier" pets as far as husbandry goes, perhaps because they appear less intimidating than other reptiles, and like you said, are resilient tanks. But literally anytime you add gallons and gallons of water to the equation for an aquatic animal, it gets a heckuva lot more complex. I'm literally uploading a video to my channel right now about how expensive it actually is to own these animals...once you factor in filters and lighting, you're not going to want it to be an impulse purchase. And my aquariums are BY FAR the enclosures needing the most maintenance, compared to my other reptiles. Not to mention sliders get enormous. Perhaps a wider availability for turtle species that stay smaller, like mud or musk turtles, that might actually thrive in a tank size that's more reasonable for people (like a 40 gallon) would alleviate the pressure from all the red eared sliders who get too large and the owners can't care for them anymore.

Tortoises are pretty easy maintenance wise, the issue with them is setting up their enclosure and having the space for it but if you can do that then they are pretty low maintenance pets after that (unlike turtles and their water). I would say the main issue with tortoises is also their best asset: thier life span. You better make sure you want a tortoise before you get one cause they will EASILY live 50 years and could very likely live into their 70s and 80s!

We just wanted look but the guy said these quarter sized turtles could live in a small plastic container with water off of 2 food pellets a day and wouldnt get much bigger. Because it was cute and sounded simple, cheap, and easy maintenance mom decided to get us one. The turtles were originally $20 each but he gave us one free so that me and my sister had our own and the first turtle wouldnt be alone. He didn't mention light, heat, or filters for them either. Luckily, once we got home, we did some research and bought UV lamps, heat lamps, heaters, and filters. They're still alive and well today and they seemed to have formed completely fine and healthy. They kept getting bigger and we kept feeding them more because 2 pellets didnt seem to be nearly enough. We bought 3-4 tanks because we had to keep upgrading, they just wouldnt stop growing. They were yellow-bellied sliders and got up to nearly a foot each (luckily they were both males). We kept them in a 75 gallon but it just wasnt nearly enough room for them. We ended up giving them to a friend because the care was too much. Impulse buying is so bad and it's crucial to know who you're buying from. This guy straight up lied and me and my sister were too young to know any better.

I have two russian tortoises that have been rehomed at least 5 times to my knowlege. I took care of them at my school, they were in a tiny terrarium with no lights and were fed this medicore tortoise food mixture. For intersession i wrote a paper detailing why the tortoises were under treated and why i could treat them properly. Now ive had them for 5 years and there moods theve changed 100% and are so happy now.

Awwwww! So happy you were able to rescue them--aren't they just the best?! Hopefully you now are housing them separately though! They live solitary lives and unless their enclosure is huge w/ many places for each to hide/not have sight of each other, it's actually very stressful for them. Sadly, there have been too many instances where ppl come home one day to find one dead from the other finally killing it.

Someone in the family bought her as a baby and kept her in a circular tupperware filled with water and with one rock, and we had an aquarium that was too small as a replacement. We had her in a pond during the summers, which she absolutely loved, but ultimately I regret that we didn't know more and have the resources to give her a wonderful life.

It took me some time to build up the money but I got there and my lil man is thriving and super happy with all of the huge improvements. Bigger also is “easier” to keep the water clean and quality better. You still obviously have to do often water changes but more water = more dilution of waste. Maybe that’ll help convince your father. Hopefully he can get the basic care he deserves - I know it’s not your fault, but regardless no animal deserves to suffer, maybe see if there’s a local rescue to surrender if you’re not leaving soon and aren’t able to give him better care than a rescue might. :(

My mom decides the turtle is now stinky and has a genius idea to buy a kiddie pool and put the turtle in that outside. Now the turtle has a filter and a kiddie pool and after only 2 days of living outside the turtle has “escaped” sending my brother into a wreck to find it when everyone knew that the turtle was stolen by an animal and eaten.

Sad to say me and my mom were guilty of SEVERE turtle neglect when I was a kid. We had an Amboina box turtle kept in a large but very bare-bones enclosure. The only thing we did right with that enclosure was the UV light. There was no appropriate soil (only tree bark shavings), only a small water bowl, no humidity control and we had no idea how and what to feed the poor little creature. It ate mashed bananas about once a week, which was all we could get it to eat. The rest of the time it sat in a corner of the enclosure looking lethargic and shriveled up. Sometimes we'd find it upside down in its water bowl, having struggled to right itself but being unable to do so. Its limbs would hang limply at its side, its head under water yet it was still somehow alive. We eventually found a local school with a sizeable biology department who were willing to take the turtle off our hands and nurse it back to health. If it survived for long, I do not know. Mind you this was 20 years ago and good care advice for tropical semi-aquatic box turtles wasnt as readily available as it is now, but man I still feel guilty about it to this day.

I think this is a really important topic, I’m I’m glad you’ve covered it. I don’t think people realise: getting a companion/pet isn’t about “aww, it’s cute.” It’s about whether or not you can take care of the pet, and if they’re suitable for your lifestyle. And it’s about whether or not you’d be willing you take care of them as long as they’re alive. If not, DON’T GET THEM. I strongly believe that people should be taught that they should only get a pet if they’re capable of caring for it.

I simply made my turtles their own pond since I could never have enough tanks to give them the proper space they needed. It’s like 400+ gallons with a fenced in area. I only bought one of the 6 turtles I have, the rest were given to me for free by an exotic pet shop (two my dad brought home one day saying they were a breeding pair, he was dumb enough to get them). None have ever escaped, and I kept them out there all winter long. They have plenty of gold fish to snack on and a whole homemade rock wall and logs/dead trees we put in their water to climb and bask on. Might have some eggs this year but I just won’t let them hatch ig. Don’t need a million turtles and I don’t want to have to go through finding actually non abusive homes for each one since that’d be nearly impossible.

I convinced her to get a betta fish instead(since they're more sturdy tbh). She then wanted 3 betta fish in a cheap bowl tank. I said get 1 and put it in an appropriate sized tank. And then made her buy everything it needed(via a quick google search no one seems to want to do for fish like it's so easy). So now the fish has been with us for a year and it's fine but at first she, like everyone, was very stubborn abt it not needing good care. She only wanted to spend like 20 dollares on it and I kept putting her down with facts abt the reality of caring for fish. She did get the fish in the end, but I made her do it right instead of half assing it the way ppl always seem to in pertains to fish.

Honestly if there were just some more regulations for pet stores, i think a lot of animals would be better off. As it is now, pet stores are just kinda allowed to do/say whatever they want & sell products that are genuinely harmful, like fx. hamster balls. I don’t fault them entirely because it’s the job of the distributor to educate pet owners but I know in my experience, I had to do all the research myself & I wish others would do the same before taking them on. We have both a tortoise and a turtle, both were rescued from neglectful homes. The Sulcata Tortoise is 130+ pounds, and was kept in a small outdoor dog pen, maybe 15 feet across, and has some pyramiding and shell problems. The turtle was in about an inch and a half of water with no filter or circulation and fed maybe once a month. They're both thriving and very spoiled boys now

I got three turtles like four months ago. I didn’t know anything about it. I got all the things I needed to take care of it but I still needed research. Everyday I still research about my turtles so I can make sure they’re safe and healthy. I hope my turtles can live a long life

I did lots of research before getting my two musk turtles. I went to a horticulture and animal college where we had to take care of and learn about turtles and other animals so luckily I had a good idea about them! There's so much info and knowledge people can miss out on which is why it's important to know what you're getting into beforehand. The guy in the store I got them from told me this small tank is enough for them to live in for the rest of their lives but I ended up getting them a really long big tank when they got bigger so they could have plenty of room.

met a guy whose son(? i think) has a bunch of reptiles and birds at his house and recently he had a baby red eared slider and two tiny soft shelled turtles in ~10 gallon tank with just rocks and barely any water. no heating, no light, and they were also left in a car all night and then in the cold rain later in the day. it broke me heart and a lot of the animals there were equally as neglected and it was just so sad to see all these poor animals in too small enclosures with barely or no accommodations or enrichment.

"I guess I do know where I'll be in 150 years..." ⚰️ LoL, Alex. Awesome job explaining a lot of the reasons why turtles have such a hard time in captivity. We love our Eastern Box Turtle, who certainly gets treated like family because he is, but I've seen a lot of what you're talking about, and it sucks, because they're such nice animals. I hope you're well. We really enjoy your videos in this household. Thank you for all of your time and effort. Tell Franklin I say hello. 💗🐢

This is so sad but so true. I have 7 aquatic turtles that take up a lot of space, time and money. Their habitats, if done properly are costly to setup. Keeping their water clean is a chore, so a giant canister filter is a must. They require so much more than people realize because most of the time research is not done beforehand.

I think about 3 out of 5 times that I confront a stranger at the pet store about turtles, bettas, gold fish, or most pets.. They either change their mind on impulse buying until they do research or they change the setup with my help.. One time I actually helped this moment and her 10 year old son get all the stuff for a betta fish. When he was 5, he wanted a betta but she said to wait until he's at least 10. Well he was still interested and so I met them while they were looking at the fish. I kept in touch with them and saw the set up they had after a week of introducing the fish. I'll never forget them 🥺

I was incredibly lucky with my red eared slider. She was a class pet that got passed on to me in 5th grade. By the time we got her she was already to big to humanely house in a tank. We kept her for about a year and tried to do right by her by giving her outside time and gave her live baby fish for enrichment. However eventually we found a nature center that releases them back into their natural habitat.

Another problem is that people don't know how to tell a turtle or tortoise apart. I have seen before that someone threw a tortoise 'back' into the sea. Was able to save it - but that is something I keep seeing - even when it comes to housing them (wrongly).

I rescued my red-eared slider out of a community chlorinated pool that he couldn't get out of and he had to have been maybe 2 weeks old. But he is my priority animal. I went from general knowledge of turtles because my grandparents owned several to learning new thing all the time and eminently change it for his better. I think that's thanks to this channel educating me on the abuse of turtles. Even though I didn't want him and I just happened upon him I play on keeping him through the whole way. If your wondering he's just been upgraded to a 35 gallon because he's getting bigger he has a basking spot on top of the tank, with a UVB heating bulb and water heater and I'm using a 50-100gal canister filter so i can continue to upgrade him

I'm glad your spreading the word about this, unfortunately chelonia are abused to often, I've gotten abused, injured, and one that was almost dead, I love them to death, I've gotten turtles that people can't care for due to them getting to big, I wish I could do more, but I'm doing what I can, hopefully we'll be able to stop the animals in key chains one day.

I clicked on this video really fast because I have 2 turtles rn in seperate tanks. I agree with you saying theyre really dirty animals. I live in an apartment where they don't care that I have turtles which is nice. Whenever we need the maintenance guys to come or the ladies at the front office come by, they always stop to say hi to my babies and even know them by name. I really want a diamondback terrapin turtle but with how close they are to being endangered and with all the laws in my state I can't get one which sucks. Thank you for educating people on this though since I've seen so many neglected turtles with no basking areas.

Being from the UK, the red eared slider is such a stunning looking turtle, I'm surprised people aren't keeping them in large ponds. We don't have any invasive turtles here in the UK as it is cold here (down to -10°c in winter) Just acquired my first turtle (a male golden thread) but he was fairly hard to acquire, as I had to find a breeder in my local area as there are no reptiles sold commercially near me. But they are fantastic and I look forward to the next 30-40 years with my golden thread 👌

I have a black-bellied slider that my parents gave me when I was 6. Today he is 16 years old, and I am not proud of how I treated him for the last 10 years. We neglected him, and knowing the things I know now, I dont know how he even is alive. He has a pulmonary problem (not pneumonia, but probably caused by one) that makes it hard for him to swim, and he makes the whezing sound when he stays too much in the water. So we are currently alternating between a provisory water space and our living room, where he have access to direct sunlight whenever he wants, and his shell is getting better, little by little. We did this becaus he actually didn't like to stay at his aquarium, he would not let me sleep since we started taking him out sometimes to put him on the living room. Today we can see that he is happy with his new lifestyle and we are looking for ways of doing a new terrarium that would fulfill his necessities

A automatic water change system is most likely what you are looking for or possibly a gravel vac that connects to a sink. Basicly go ask fish keepers how they make water changes easier.

i just took in a res that was severely neglected, shes six years old but only one inch cuz she was kept in a 5 gallon, no uvb, no calcium, etc. now shes in a 55 gallon with tons of stuff to do the right diet and a basking spot with uvb. she may never grow but hopefully shes happy now. turtles are SO much more work than you'd think. they're also so messy, even with a good filter I have to do so many water changes.

This is so sad...I adore my tortie, Morla, more than I ever imagined possible! And imagining her or her brethren suffering neglect breaks my heart! But yes, torties are a LOT of work to KEEP RIGHT! Morla needs fresh veggies and great variety. Not all the grocery store veggies are actually healthy for them, so it takes work to research, locate, and constantly go get them (darn produce doesn't last very long--and it's not cheap either!) She needs a lot of space (which means a lot substrate, amd cleaning day is a production!) and to keep humidity and temperatures correct, get enough UVB coverage across the whole enclosure, and do the daily spot cleaning (because I don't like having pee and poop sitting there, so I completely remove it/all affected substrate/wash her up too), takes time and is a constant expense $$$. And because she was a rescue from (I believe unintentional) neglect, she ended up costing me almost $2k in vet bills within the first year of having her in order to save her life and deal with the issues her prior owner's ignorance caused. Though (hopefully!) most ppl won't start their tortie ownership this way, finding a truly competent vet experienced with your specific species of reptile is a MUST! Remember: THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A GENERIC TURTLE OR TORTOISE OR LIZARD/SNAKE/ETC. Each species of tortoise (or other animal) has its own dietary needs, habitat conditions, and characteristics/expected temperament. It's vital they truly know them!)

Literally this is the best case scenario for impulse buy, they’re happy healthy and growing

i think a reason people think turtles are easy to keep is because in media turtles and tortoises are portrayed as slow moving animals that dont do anything. and therefore people probably think since they dont do much, that the person themselves wont need to do much either.
