Mat’s finally had a chance to get his hands on the Mercedes EQS SUV!
That’s right, Mercedes’s range-topping all-electric saloon is now available as an SUV, and Mat’s about to see if it has what it takes to compete with class leaders like the Tesla Model X!
So does it have what it takes? Well, let’s take a closer look. For starters, it looks relatively smart from the outside, although it doesn’t have much of an imposing presence for such a big (and expensive!) SUV. It looks a bit nondescript truth be told.
Thankfully though, the inside is super luxurious and more than fits the big price tag! There are high-quality materials throughout the cabin, and it comes fitted with the same hyper-screen infotainment system as found in the EQS saloon. Passengers in the back even have the option to adjust their seats, and there’s even the option to add a third row of seats if needed!
There are two editions of the EQS SUV available, with the range-topper being the 580. This comes equipped with two electric motors that can deliver 544hp and 858Nm of torque. It’ll also shoot you to 60mph in just 4.7 seconds!
Here’s the thing though, the price starts at £130,000 in the UK!! So is it worth it? You’ll have to stick with Mat to find out!

EQS is definitely NOT the most luxurious Mercedes. It ha ONLY AIRMATIC suspension. NO E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL ! GLS is far more advanced in this and MAYBACH GLS is also LUXURIOUS.

There is something about the EQS I can't help but really really like. However the white paint colour really doesn't do it any favours, looks so much better in other colours. Really enjoyed the off road section too.

I agree with you, I would buy one in red or black or orange ... orange but I absolutely cannot afford one on my life.
The hyperscreen and ambient lightning are so incredible in modern Mercedes-Benz models. Seriously so cool

This is much better looking than the EQS sedan, but honestly looks more like a GLC level vehicle than an S level. I wonder if you can opt to not have a 3rd row and get more legroom in the rear seats?

They're most likely waiting to release a EQ Maybach that has no third row and the special backseats, so this EQS is just normal. My theory Edit: autocorrected to mayback, don’t want to get flamed

I would say that it look like a scaled-up GLA - it has more of a crossover feeling than SUV. New GLC looks better than the EQS SUV in my book. GLA is a good looking car, but for a compact crossover, not for a full-sized luxurious SUV

This is one of the best Mercedes reviews I have ever seen. Mat, much respect for that off road route the people from Mercedes America took you on. I would have said, "No, no, thanks, you get us out of here." That was a fantastic route Mercedes America's team chose because it highlighted every advantage in that Mercedes off road design. I'm a Mercedes hating snob but that Mercedes SUV is a damn nice vehicle. Inside and out. Dammit Mercedes, you make your suv's too nice!

It looks cheaper than it really is though.
Andreas has done a very good job getting that American look, but the accent is still unmistakable. I hope he's enjoying his stay in Colorado. :)

He's got an interesting accent, the mix of unmistakable German pronunciations with the obvious little bits of American pronunciations cropping up every so often we're really cool, definitely a cool mild hybrid accent

Seriously, the materials of the seats I don't see much leveling on the part of other Premium ones... that's where my impression of the difference starts, because it seems to me the most luxurious!
It’s all features and tech . I don’t see anyone having an emotional love to cars as it was with old beautiful cars beautifully designed

wow its cool to see Matt in the US again. Im 7 months late lmao but I remember watching him review the Tesla model S Plaid in LA, and he drove north on the 405 through the valley from the Sherman Oaks area; When I watched that I went out with my bf and we drove the same route. we drive a '22 model Y. It was fun to think he drove the same route in a Tesla, thinking back on his critiques about the drive, while experiencing it myself was nice.
For your car selling thing , does it work internationally or only in the UK ?
Carwow, could you do a video one day where you test electric off-road cars (Rivian etc.) around your off-road testing area and compare how bad the range drops while off-roading.
Man this is very impressive. Not an easy trail. Now I'm curious how it would perform on snow. This is really good. Only thing I'm worried about now is range.

It's all in the non-factory tires. Car itself had little to do in clearing that trail other than having a shorter turning radius.

It's definitely not ugly... But like Matt said it doesn't have the presence of other luxury SUV'S.... Same as the EQS imo.

For some reason, Mercedes has forgotten that once you go over a certain price point customers care more about how the appearance of the vehicle makes them feel than anything else, so styling a vehicle at this price in order to prioritize range is just stupid. These people have more than enough money to have fast chargers at their homes, and value image and projecting status over all else, they'd happily take 30 miles less range for a more imposing look. Trying to be efficient is for people who have to manage their costs (aka poor people), the customers that can afford these vehicles don't want to project the image of someone that has to spend carefully.

It really is... its so annoying that they won't back it up with a nice and clean design on the outside. There is no agression on those electric models while they got cars like Glc coupé that look like beasts

Great video as always Mat! One note: 157 miles with 53% battery left means ~334 miles total not ~297 miles (17:04). It would be 297 if 53% was spent and not remaining, thus the mistake I presume.

What is that creeking sound? My car makes it when it's on the park brake/electric brake (you have on an EV) and when you go out of it and brake you dont get these sounds. I think it's special to that traffic light/ temporary wait braking?

Gorgeous and capable SUV..... for more than twice what I paid for my Model Y. Yes.... envious of the EQS interior.
Lot's of cars shows their speed and Pro reading 10% higher than actual, them as a motor journolist you should also check that for electric cars, at least for range testing videos.

@@LP-fj6sr They don’t really look that much cheaper than those in EQS, and the rest of the cockpit looks much better and more expensive in the GLS But then also I’m the guy that likes to have a few buttons in my car🤷🏽♂️

The EQS screen is far better in person , it looks considerably better and has higher res.. Also, this car has superior fit/finish and ambient lighting compared to GLS.
As a Tesla cult member... I must say this Merc is incredible!

@@Talha9M That's the right thing to do. Wait until the EV market has stabilised. Much of the EVs on sale today will be outdated 5 years from now, because every baboon and his uncle is making EVs that will not stand the test of time.
I actually think the exterior styling looks like a million bucks. Especially the rear for some reason - it looks so elegant and expensive. The profile is a bit Mazda CX-9, but at the same time it has a presence on its own. And the interior is just impossible to match. I really think this is going to be a huge success but it is rather expensive.

I'll be honest , I'm not big on electric vehicles because most are doing the same thing. Since no grill needed they all tend to be bland. Rear ends tend to be bland as well. This one i really like. They put character in the grill. The rear no exhaust but at least a little styling. I love the interior and was really impressed with the off road capabilities. Not hardcore but capable if you need it. I like it..
