    Thanks for covering the show Thomas! I was there 2 days and didn't make it to half of these rooms. It was my first show and I have to give a lot of credit to reviewers like yourself who can explain the nuances of these systems. In most rooms it felt tough to get more than a general impression and often that impression was "do you think bass is all I care about?" I commented on Jay's video but the Galion was a great pairing for the Typhons. Maybe it had a little less authority than the Norma, but it made up for it with refinement in the treble and it felt like it wouldn't give me listening fatigue whereas I wasn't so sure with the solid state amp. Great work!

    23:54......Canton baby!!! That's cool that you gave them a listen since you had the reference 3.2. Here is what's so surprising to me. I own their Vento 890.2's and my friend has the 3.2's like you had. We each think the Tweeter sounds fabulous. Lots of detail yet smooth and not bright. Then you just said in this video that lots of your listeners feel that the Canton Tweeter is super bright. Then my buddy Eric listened to the reference 9.2 bookshelf speakers that I have in storage. He thinks the Tweeter is dull. From what I see online the consensus is the Canton ceramic Tweeter is very special. Lol! I'm just going to sum it up with everyone has their own particular flavor of sound that they enjoy. What was your opinion on the tweeter of the Canton 3.2's you used to own? Do you regret selling them at all?

Unfortunately, I did not get to hear your amp and I went into that room three times over the three days just to make sure I wasn't tripping the first or second time I heard it. Edit: For the Dynaudio room with the C50. That to me was the most outstanding price to performance room. Those speakers were outstanding.

    Thanks for your report from the show, Thomas. I like it very much when audio youtuber share their experiences and impressions, and when I see films of several colleagues then always more a whole picture emerges. I was not there, live in Germany and will visit the Munich show. One thing I found a bit unfortunate. I know you like Klipsch Heritage Speakers from one of your videos, I think it was about a LaScala back then. Also I really agree to how you describe the Khorn sound at the show. So I had so much anticipation about what you would have told about the new Heritage Jubilee, especially since I have an Underground Jubilee (now Roy Delgado's official name for it) since 15 years with K402 and TAD 4002 drivers. I haven't heard the new Heritage Jubilee yet but I would have been very interested in your always very eloquent description of sounds. Thank you very much. BTW please keep up show impressions, I really like how you capture it.

    A continent away from me, this video is the best alternative to 'visit' the show anyway 😊 Good to see Estelon made it across the pond. I had the same experience listening to their entry-level model, I can only imagine how the top of the line sounds. I also like the Luxman room and the Korean speakers. That design could also be used for other components than speakers. Imagine two of the Korean 'horizontal' speaker constructions flanking a third in the middle that holds amplifier, DAC, streamer and CD player. Much better to look at than a standard dull HiFi rack.

    I was there, met you, and enjoyed meeting you in person! I actually did an interview with you regarding the Typhon speakers (which are excellent). I mentioned to you that the Kimber room (room 1118) was doing a speaker cable comparison A/B - which my friend and I both found startling. We have performed our own speaker cable AB tests at home and were able to tell a difference, but with the down time between turning off the amp, swapping the cables, getting everything back on, volume matched, etc. the difference was noticeable but subtle. We actually spent quite a while talking to the guy from Zu audio regarding the setup. I ran into you again the next day and mentioned the room again. Did you stop by it? I feel like this room should be getting a lot more attention than it got. I am absolutely not affiliated with Kimber in any way, don't own any Kimber cables and in fact, don't care about the specific cables at all. What I thought was amazing is how easy it was to discern a very distinct difference between the cables in that room - even in the, frankly terrible, listening environment.

    I like the current format. Question for Thomas and his subscribers. I'm looking at 300b tube amps, my room is 17x25 with tall ceilings. Is a 300b tube plausible? 2. I'm auditioning sonus faber's sonota (5-7k) what other speakers should I audition to pair with a 300b?

  • @ThomasAndStereo

    @ThomasAndStereo

    Жыл бұрын

    Well, in theory it depends on how sensitve your speakers are. Sonnetta are 90db but it does not mean it is easy to drive because even if you can get loud volume, you might not be able to get the microdynamics. If you had a Focal Kanta 2, those are easy to drive but they are a bit light on the bass and bright. So in your case, 50% chance it will work if you bought a Willsenton R300 for example.

    Hi Thomas

  • @mimofi
    @mimofi Жыл бұрын

    Hey Thomas, I actually own the size down from the Reference Canton 3k you listened to .. ie the Ref 5k (2 x 7" woofers vs. 2 x 8" woofers). Previously I owned the same config Canton Vento (896.2 if memory serves with 2 x 7 " woofers) and prior to that the Canton Chrono SL (these had 2 x 6" woofers, ie same as the mid driver). Clearly the step from the Chrono was big and the tweeter material and woofer cone material was different (the ones you reviewed had aluminum like my Chronos). The Chrono set was on the bright side for sure, but the Vento newer series I replaced them with were far less bright. That said, the Ref 5k is another league altogether and again the cone and tweeter material, and crossover, were different. I would qualify the Ref 5k as very neutral and natural from mids and highs with very fast and well extended bass. Even though they have roughly the same cabinet size as the Vento and the same 2 x 7" woofer size there is just no comparison. I'd say the level of improvement from the Vento to the Ref 5k was dramatically more than from the Chrono to the Vento. In CDN $ the Vento was about $7k for the pair or 2x the Chrono, and the 5k Ref was close to 2x the Vento. Where I had some brightness issues with Chrono and some tamber and bass issues with Vento, the 5K is just great. I had heard B&Ws at much more than the 5Ks before buying and to me they had very good mids but a bit bright and the bass was not even close. All that to say that if you felt the Canton's you heard were much better than what you'd reviewed I think it is because the speakers are better than they were. Thx for the enjoyable and informative non grumpy old man review ;-)

  • @mimofi

    @mimofi

    Жыл бұрын

    I did some checking and the Ref 5k tweeters are aluminum oxyd ceramic, Vento is ceramic, Chrono SL aluminum-manganese. As for Woofer and Mid driver cones the 5Ks are ceramic & tungsten treated aluminum, Vento is titanium treated aluminum and Chrono SL all aluminum. The Ref 3.2k DC you reviewed used aluminum-oxide/ceramic tweeter so similar/same as my 5K, but they used all aluminum woofer and mid cones (like the Chrono SL 590 DC). I assume this made them brighter as this was my experience (I had same electronics, incl. McIntosh MA6600 amp, as I progressed through from Chrono to Vento to Reference series Cantons).

    Jay designed those??? CSS has been around and doing the DIY kits, for a while now. I don’t believe Jay could design a first class speaker, let alone crossover by himself, anymore than I believe you designed the Galion’s circuit. I have spent years working on learning how to design this stuff, and I’m still nowhere near world class (obviously it your fault). However, I find it irritating to hear someone say these KZreadrs came and beat all of the professionals. NO- that didn’t happen. That’s like going to an artist, commissioning then to paint something, and then saying “Look what I painted.”

  • @ThomasAndStereo

    @ThomasAndStereo

    From my understanding, Jay came up with the concept and CSS implemented it. A bit like Jay was the architect while CSS was the Engineer. You will have to watch his video to see the whole story. He did play with the crossover. Without Jay's involvement, that project would never have seen the light. For Galion, I insisted on "Designed by Mr. Liu" printed on the back of the amp. Everyone who follows me knows my involvement was simply to voice the unit and improved it with the help of multiple exceptional engineers. I have made that clear in multiple videos. Without my involvement, the amp Doge designed would not have reached a level of performance where owners are comparing it to their own amp that cost twice. $10k to $20k(You can read their testimony on my website)

    @@ThomasAndStereo I know you have been clear on the Galion, and I am not saying that having an idea and funding it’s development is NOT extremely valuable- because it is. I vote on shareholder issues, of stocks that I own, but I am not the one engineering things at Microsoft. I have listened to Jay talk, and he is not exactly Andrew Jones. Of course, he does not have to be Andrew Jones, either. However, to say that Jay is ‘David’ beating out the ‘Goliaths’ of the professionals like Andrew Jones, is hard to wrap my mind around. Maybe I just took interpreted it wrong. I have been trying to find mentors that can teach me how to make amazing speakers, but beyond The Loudspeaker Cookbook and the parts express forum- it is hard to find people who can coach you to the level of DIY speaker building of Troels Gravesen. All that to say that I am sensitive about seeing ppl get credit for building speakers that they didn’t engineer. For example: Paul McGowan spent decades trying to get PS Audio some nice speakers. The new FR30’s are great, but that’s not Paul’s creation IMO- it’s 100% Chris Brunhaver who had the knowledge and skill to make it work. Obviously, Paul’s money, manufacturing, logistics, and marketing was necessary, BUT all of those things had been around for decades, and no FRS30. Chris is the person I credit for that speaker.

    @@ThomasAndStereo I don't see it really! you have a fixed price and that's it why should that be so complicated for accounting? All you need to know is volumes of sales and your percentage. I was wondering if jay actually use your amplifier for tuning the the speakers? do you know!? tuning a amplifier to a speaker is the best way to go to get synergy between the two and to sound very good. Jay didn't like it when I started telling him about why didn't you sell it as a kit for two and a half thousand less he said he couldn't do it for $2,500 less wouldn't be any profit?? I said that's nonsense most of the cost is in the materials cabinet if you're not supplying the wood "MDF" just stick on blueprints that people can use to cut out material, all your left with is the drivers and crossover parts and speaker terminals stuffing if needed, what should be under $180 per -speaker. that's when my comments got deleted 😆 Have you thought about designing a speaker to work with your amplifier it should only be small tweaking is needed I'll look at the seas kits For a bookshelf loki Mk lll two-way speaker concentric mid-range and Twitter good for digital playback another speaker that probably work well with your amplifier is Excel bifrost kit I change the second inductor from 0.4mH to 0.7mH extend the port another 28mm you get down to 30 Hertz then. Not sure how the driver will handle that probably be ok 90 dB efficient or contact sees and work with them send them an amplifier they're probably build your speaker matcha amp the amp you can sell the kit for $1300 or a complete speaker for 2 and 1/2, I'm sure you can find a local workshop that can build your cabinets? Or falcon acoustic say really good quality speakers and cabinets kits, birch ply fairly cheap is there a good company probably not as cheap as Seas tho. Or Madisound in America night design you speak? That make some good stuff. Another speaker might be worth checking out seas cx 871 90db with a concentric mid-range tweeter, I've heard it's a very good speaker the kit is ready for assemble at 1,590 dollars complete you got some friends capable? a little bit of tweaking and you can match it to your amp very easily. Through madisound. That's the one I would concentrate on as a flagship speaker for your amplifier nice looking speaker Great specs a bit of tweaking should be able to match it perfectly. might be worth your while trying to get one and see what it sounds like. They have DIY audio shows you can see one there.

    @@ThomasAndStereo The filter comes in many types of implementations. Including a camera that track your head (to know where the ears are). The whole system (gear, room, earshape, head) is calibrated with two earphones that actually is two microphones. And doing a frequency sweep. The cool thing is that what it is microphones then you can do a (live) recording and then reproduce it. You can enable/disable the "filter" and do comparison, and what you were present at the recording then it is easy to compare! We kan have a guy going 360° around you and clapping and whisper in one of your ears.. Better testing is hard to get! Something you NEED to look into this is next level and all other technologies is old school.
