    @@stefpichette7742 I have owned the Totem Signature 1, Forest, Metal, and Sky and one thing they have in common is they are really revealing. Some are on the bright side, so if you like that kind of sound, then the TS Voyager is not for you. If you are however looking to explore other types of sound, then it would make sense. Yes, it will feel 'veil' compared to Totem but after a few songs, you might be surprised. All a question of taste. I don't recommend this to Focal fans.

    Seldom does a KZread audio presentation get my attention and as well, make my excitement audio-O-meter float up into the positive green zone but.... this one did. I could detail all of the boxes this speaker checks for me but I won't. I have to think that for me this speaker just might pair fabulously well with a decently powered Class A or G amp. Musical Fidelity, Schiit Aegir or Adcom all come to mind but then a Hegel H95 might fit the bill as well. I know the sweet sound of the Harbeth line but to be honest .... way too expensive for my taste. If I could find a speaker that brings on the mid-range as you describe and do so at mid-low to mid volume then my search would be over. The price was a bit of a pleasant surprise as well. Good God Thomas... what have you (not done) but brought to light?? This engineer is brilliant. That waterfall graph (showing wasted energy) was almost perfect. Never seen that before.... almost hard to believe. Super congratulations on this one Thomas! ( a transmission-line version yet to come?🚀)

    Thanks a lot and the best part is, there is a 15 day trial period so you can be sure you made the right decision...or not :) The transmission line one will be in 2 to 3 weeks BUT it is very different. The transmission line was designed to be use in a big room so the midrange is buttery smooth, I mean with extra butter, which is different than this speaker where the midrange has more texture. Also, you cannot use the transmission line nearfield, it has like 3x the bass of this speaker. A completely different experience.

    The RF7 midrange is excellent, just that it does not have the resolution of the Klipsch Forte. Meaning, if you want to hear the exchange of breath of the singer, you would need to put more effort in. You can argue the RF7 is 'smoother' so you don't hear as much information in the midrange. It is not bad at all and some people might prefer that. We tend to exaggerate in a review when comparing but if you have nothing to compare to, the RF7 midrange is just fine.

  • @ThomasAndStereo

    @ThomasAndStereo

    6 ай бұрын

    I asked the designer and let me just copy and paste what he said. "The capacitors and inductors are all custom made. If you notice the value of one of the caps is 11uF. A very non standard value. Even the 4.7uF cap was made for this as the manufacturer doesn’t hold onto large inventory of parts. They are made when the XO is ordered. The resistors are standard values and probably stock items but also made by same company. " Yes, we use Dayton RST28F-4 tweeter and DC130A-8 woofer. They were chosen for smooth response, and low breakup modes below the XO frequency and the woofer has natural falloff at 5kHz which allows me to place an electro-acoustic 4th order low pass filter using a 2nd order electrical filter. The woofer also has a nice pincushion shape bezel for a distinctive retro look. The tweeter is quite advanced with a large magnet, a low resonant frequency, a damped rear chamber, copper pole pieces to reduce distortion, and uses ferrofluid cooling to handle higher power. It compares well to much more expensive Scandinavian offerings and I actually prefer the smoothness of the Dayton (cost no object). There is a “phase spider” mounted under the metal mesh grill to give a smooth polar response. I like the mesh grill - it protects the tweeter and smooths the sound. There aren’t many dome tweeters on the market with a mesh grill. The tweeter also has a thick aluminum front plate that feels solid and looks clean. "

    Thank you for the great reply. I surely suspect you will sell quite a few of these once you offer an mdf or birch cabinet like you mentioned, at a slightly lower cost, I suspect. I'm a big fan of the dayton classic woofers myself. The aluminum reference or even the aluminum classic series just don't do midrange for me very well. I wish you the best with these and your other ventures. I'm planning on buying one of your amps next year. I can't wait.

    Hi Thomas, I really like the way your designer found a driver that allowed him to push the crossover frequency to 5KHz, it makes a lot of sense to me. Too many designs crossover way too low and that also means needing tweeters that can handle much more power, which also has some major disadvantages. When paired well, a two way design should be very hard to detect which part of your signal is coming from the tweeter. Far too often, loudspeakers give fatigue because we are too aware of the different drive units and focus too much on the sound from the tweeter. Well that's what experience has taught me. Good luck with this new project.

    Chario crosses at below 1600Hz, because according to them, it's more difficult to detect phase at such frequencies. Many times, tweeters are detectable due to dispersion mismatch - wider dispersion than the woofer, in those mid-high frequencies, so you hear "more tweeter" in your room.

Any way the demo is sounding GOOD ! So one should not compare those two different speakers ........both are what they are ! The woofer of the LS3/5 is mounted at the rear of the front panel.....that changes the dispersion and charges the speaker different than a front mounted speaker. Wish you succes with the new speaker...and excellent synergy with your Galion amp... I can in theory send you 3 pairs. My only concern is shipping because in the USA, I am only charging $39 for shipping so it makes it a good deal. Shipping to the UK is going to cost an arm and a leg. Email me at thomas.tan@galion-audio.com and we can perhaps figure this out to see what is the best decision for you. I have set international shipping to $95 for now.

    Well you have to keep in mind this speaker sounds best nearfield on a desk so you are not playing at loud volume. As long as your volume is not too too low, it is ok. Off axis, based on measurement is normal. On my desk, I usually have it almost pointing forward anyways.

    Those drivers look like from Dayton Audio. Personally I am not so sure about crossing that woofer at 5kHz and from the simulation it shows the drivers are not summing that well between around 2.2kHz to 4.2kHz. In fact that tweeter can be crossed much lower with no problem.

    I have been playing with crossover for over a year now and I also thought, how is it possible to crossover at 5khz, I get distortion trying to cross over at 3khz already with my other speakers. @@ThomasAndStereo I am currently still tuning the crossover of my DIY speaker after 2 years of listening, so I know what you mean 😄. Not only theoretically, practically it shows there is phase issue between 2.2kHz to 4.2kHz, that's why the drivers are not summing properly. If it's me, I will not cross higher than 3kHz. BUT if you like what you hear, that's what it matters. 😉

    @@ThomasAndStereo crossover has nothing to do with distortion. Such a high crossover point will impact directivity, or sound dispersion. Woofer will have narrow dispersion at 5k, and when tweeter takes over, it will have wide dispersion, so it's a mismatch. Also like someone mentioned, at high frequency drivers go out of phase easy because of short sound waves and comb filtering. For example, two tweeters is generally not a good idea. Some tweeters just can't be crossed low enough, but Dayton rst28f is super happy at 2k crossover

For a Proac speaker more akin (but better) than the BBC you should look at the Tablette 10 Signature. One of the last of the late Stewart Tyler designs it is magical in my opinion.
