This is great to hear as a newcomer to bjj. A lot of times I get frustrated or embarrassed that I have been hand fighting for a while and I just attempt a fruitless trip or sweep without prioritizing getting good grips. It’s the equivalent of sitting in traffic with cars behind you and feeling compelled to pull out in front of an oncoming car because you feel like you have sat in place for too long: Dangerous and stupid.

Awesome :D Please keep posting more concepts about BJJ and Grappling. I find that I learn heaps faster when I am taught why or how it works as opposed to solely learning the technique!

Hey, I actually like this video. I'm a Judoka so I can tell you that having Judo in your repertoire would really help you with not just good take downs but good throws as well. These are kind of Judo-light instructions compared to what you would get in my Judo class which does teach No Gi Judo.

Stephan I've been learning a lot from your videos and I've applied a lot of techniques in practice because of it, I'm still knew to the sport though and my next tournament for no gi is coming up my question is what"s your opinion on wearing wrestling shoes to a no gi tournament?

In other words, add in some basic wrestling to your jiu-jitsu game and fight for the dominant tie up, which makes a lot of sense--if you want dominant position on the ground, why not in the clinch? On a side note, it is interesting how similar grip fighting looks to chi sao, push hands, etc. "Trapping" seems to just be a stylized form of parrying and grip fighting that was designed for a time when people fought differently and/or has become overly aestheticized with the passing of time.

Also, the singe leg leg when the guy has your wrist is still there, your downward leg grabbing motion will be stronger than the guy's wrist grabbing, lifting motion.

The concept of my tie or no tie is excellent. However, her extension is kind of simplistic if you have a more developed wrestling game. The whizzer can be stronger than the underhook if you have a good whizzer game, and especially if you have a good Uchi/Harai game. Even if you just whizzer hard you can cause the guy to faceplant and when he postures up, take the guillotine. Or if he doesn't posture, just drive him over and take side control.

I am a very skilled wrestler and a GJJ practitioner takedowns are all about level change in shooting singles and doubles to look for a throw always starts with wrist control say you shoot on your opponent but his sprawl is just too good that is when an inside ankle pick really comes in handy rotating leg towards you pull up on foot one hand have other hand behind knee and drive head into knee all at same time but leg must be rotated by lifting back of ankle do all in one motion

In my opinion, this concept of gaining dictatorial control before you attack applies every throughout grappling. I think that we need to stop thinking along the lines of "position before submission", (its to linear and outdated) and start thinking along the lines of "control then attack".

If you are going to discuss tie-ups, you should incorporate head position, as it is far more important.

@ralph folarin No GI is very different. In judo there are grips and controls on the GI. No-gi involves none of this.

NOGI still has grips and controls... they just don't have a vocabulary like they do in judo. It all applies you just have to translate it.

The problem with these instructional videos is that these scenarios are based on assuming that your opponent will have martial arts training, and follow the rules. But in a real fight your opponent's not gonna play fair, they will slap, bite and scratch if it means they win the fight...

Spoken like a wrestler who has never run into a Judoka. Take downs have a lot more to do with technique. Wrestlers & BJJ guys have almost none. All of my kids train with BJJ, MMA, & wrestlers and even my girls throw guys who have 50 lbs on them. All coaches who know them yell "sit down" to their ppl as soon as they notice who they're fighting. Gracie was a fool to remove the standing part of judo. On the street it ends fights instantly. gravesjudo(dot)com
