17 is late? Heh, I got handed a bass when I was 50 at a jam night I went to with a guitar player friend. The house band guy handed me his bass and said "Here, play this." And I'm like "I don't know how!" And he says "It's only three notes, here, I'll show you." Long story short, 13 years later and I'm in a great 3-piece, no drama cover band, giging three or four times a month, loving every minute of it, and I guess this is pretty much how I learned. And will continue to learn hopefully for a very long time. I'm really glad that guy handed me his bass that night! Good stuff, thanks Scott.

I'm in the same boat and about the same age. I bought my eldest son a guitar, I've had a play with it, we've both never played one and I just really fancy playing bass. I'm buying one in a week or so and we're going to learn and play together. You're comment on this video confirmed to me that in time we can do a few gigs. Cheers mate.

I've been playing bass for 35 years, and the best lesson I had was very early on, when I said it was an easy instrument to play and didn't really think it would do much for my cred. Then a friend of a friend said - "You're right mate, it's an easy instrument to play...but it's a really hard instrument to play well". And he was right - I'm still learning.

I thought... ok, if I can't get into university I can do it on my own... all you get in university is 'structured learning' that you are force fed. You can go and study with all the teachers that teach at university anyway - they all teach privately too lol! I got in contact with some great bass players, organized lessons with them, went to jam nights, put a band together - everything that you do in Uni but off my own back. Get your own study plan together and stick to it! Ez man! S ;)))

You could remove the word 'bass' from this title and this lesson is still amazing for life in general.

I learned classic music at 15 and someone told me i was to old. I've played piano,flute and trompet and i gave up everything. I'm 46 now and start again in music.with bass...the best instrument ever. We are not to old to be happy playing. it's all about happyness doing some music.

The small information "packets", and constant work in small chunks are important in any other stuff in life, too. My life was changed, when I started using this "technique", or method. You are right.

LMAO - He started late - I'm 62 and started 6-months ago. Okay, I'm a professional musician with a degree (music education - just retired after 38 years), so I know the theory and I know how to read and can sight-read pretty well, but this has been my dream and I wanna do this. Where will it take me? Who knows, but I'll have a blast chiseling away to play my best. The joy of this lesson is "it's okay to take baby steps" and STILL FEEL GOOD - still make positive progress. The key is to move forward, regardless of the duration (10,000 hours or bust! LOL). Thanx, Scott.

You are very correct. This is about life. Don't be ashamed. I was at the point at one time where I thought I would never play again. I had given up on life many times. I might not be a rock star like I wanted to be when I was a kid, but I can jam and continue to improve. I have had serious health problems and couldn't play for a long time. But here I am . I'm not strung out on Heroin and not in jail. This video--and similar positive teaching--is the kind of stuff we need to watch.

29 years and still learning. It really does take a lifetime to master an instrument. When I die, I hope I will be able to say I learned some new bass trick earlier that day, even if I'm 100 years old.

Scott, your attitude is not only 100% correct, but proves that a good, open-minded attitude and willingness to take the small steps and be constantly evolving, and enjoying the journey to becoming great will carry ANY bass player much further than obsessing over technique, reading music, or trying to sound EXACTLY like (type bass hero's name here). clubtough: it's getting to be more about money, though. he's got the SBL website that you have to subscribe to to get content ave lessons etc. I don't hold it against him; id do the same to make a living if I had a skill I could teach.

As someone being self taught, this is VERY good advice. I have heard of all these names of chords/scales, but when I put names to things I've already played with on the bass, it is very satisfying. Bite-sized steps: A good way to learn anything really

great words of encouragement and patience Scott. it's always useful for someone to give voice to the work that goes into something like learning to play a bass. We all forget how much effort goes into learning anything and get bogged down in the mistakes rather than focus on the incremental progress that takes us to the next level. I have been a musician all my life. Primarily I am a music producer. I've learned a lot in my life: how melody works, harmony, etc. I've always been told I'm good. It never stopped there for me though. I have a bass and I watch these lessons to learn how to play it well. However, I also watch these lessons to further enrich my understanding of bass for my production. I wanted to say this to show how important it is to never stop learning, even when you think you know everything you need to know.

I'm a drummer but everything you said can't be more true. You're one of the most positive people on earth. If I was 15 years younger, I'd learn both base and drums but I gotta focus on the drums now :) But I'll watch your videos as well, groove is instrument-agnostic :) God bless!

this man puts bass tutorial videos, gives you advices and tips on how to play the bass correctly and how to not, breaks down famous funky bass lines, teaches us what music is about and most of all gives us these inspirational videos.. I don't need no response..

This is great scott, I'm the same way with school or music universities specifically. I'll be going back to get my teaching degree, but I will say that it's always important to give yourself a pat on the back for the goals that you accomplished. I had a music teacher that was so negative towards his students that a majority of the students always felt defeated.

Very inspiring stuff, everything from being proud of yourself to taking baby steps is all so true but often forgotten. Like yourself, I wasn't born in a musical family and I have the impression that my father still thinks the band I'm in and music in general are just for fun and not really meant to turn into something I could make a living out of. About a half hour ago I learned the funky bass groove from one of your other videos, so that's one of my three achievements I can be proud of.
