Consider supporting the channel by becoming a Patron www.patreon.com/HeyHistorically Narration correction: In the middle of *Rome (Not Roman Empire) HISTORICALLY FUN FACT: The reason why it's unclear whether its Stephen the Sixth or the Seventh is quite interesting. In 752 a pope got elected who passed away before he "officially" became the pope. Before his passing however, he did already opt in to be named Stephen, hence he got referenced by sources from up to the 1960's as Stephen the Fifth. In 1961 however it was concluded that because he never officially became a pope it was a better idea to scrap him off the pope list. That is why our bad boy Stephen is now referred to as Stephen the Sixth instead of the Seven. It has happened multiple times before in our history that the list of popes got changed. There used to be a time where there were sometimes 2 popes "the pope" at a time, which caused for a very confusing... time! But hey, that's for another video :)

Ah, the era of Popes and Anti-Popes, with the other center of the Church being at Avignon. I am not sure if they ever met up when there were two Popes, but at least we can be sure if they did, it wasn't explosive except verbally.
What shocks me is that people actually went along with it. The stories of Stephen screaming and ranting at the corpse must have made his own government question his sanity. Reputations take a lifetime to make, and only seconds to destroy, and digging up a dead guy is a pretty surefire way to tank your entire image.

They didn't get along with it, actually. Pope Stephen was arrested, trialed and condemned to public execution. And he managed to get strangled by another prisoner while waiting for it's sentence.

It was just the simple fact there was no law against it and he had the authority to do so. Trying to fight it could get you punished so no one dared. it was only when people rose up together that they fought back. Which is why AFTER this they made it illegal. They just hadn't beforehand because ... apparently no one in the courts of Rome thought someone would be crazy enough to bring a corpse to Trial.

The whole point of hierarchical authority is that you don’t need respect or trust to rule other people
It's always funny when one person does something so obnoxious they end up making a rule/law about just to make sure it doesn't repeat even once.

Charles II had a jolly good go with Oliver Cromwell's body, on account of Olly C chopping his father's head off (that of Charles I). I don't think the Royal Family have forgiven Olly. To this day, a captured Russian canon from the Crimean War gifted to Queen Victoria, and placed on the Cathedral green in Ely, Cambs., points directly at Oliver Cromwell's house nearby.
Can't wait for Marcion's video.

God forbid this happens to Biden, may he reign for 1,000 years, but all they would have to do is mumble incoherently.
I once wrote a notice of concerns (inital paperwork preceeding being sued for defamation) and in it I cited the part of the law stating "dead people cant be sued" as on of the possible responses to my letter.
You lift out a vital part about him being strangled by another prisoner but i did notice you said "strangled" but this doesn't apply to early hangings it would have been said "hanged until dead" as it was considered less personal but strangled on the other hand is very personal, today it's used interchangeably but back then it wasn't. Edit but great video anyhow 👏 sub+1
The man is back is at it again with more content :) Now i can flex to my friends that i know more about history than them 😂

It's amazing how some people that get power are able to mess it up so greatly and lose it.
"So, you thought you could get away from the law with that little dying stunt of yours? Well, tell me, Mr. Thrombosis, did you violate canon law, commit perjury, and pretend to be a bishop when you weren't?" "Yes. Pasta fazool, I am a fool."

your animations are really cute and kid friendly
The story seems utterly bizarre. But just what those official acts of Stefan were that were declared invalid isn't mentioned. Could it be that they were quite important, and that having them repealed retroactively was the real purpose of that weird trial? But that wouldn't explain the second exhumation and throwing the body into the river.

This is very simply how symbolic politics worked. It must not have been due to Stephen's personal feelings. Demonstrating political disagreements through acts like this wasn't all that rare in the past. Keep in mind legal acts in premodern times needed to be publically demonstrated and recognised in order to come into effect; this is a very basic mechanic of premodern political systems that don't have our degree of state control or established legal stratification. This also has a spiritual dimension, wherein someone's eternal rest is disturbed to signal and symbolise their alleged sinfulness which makes them undeserving of the same. It's really not all that mad.

It's really not all that illogical to do what Stephen did. It was an act of public demonstration of political change.

Is the cutting of the fingers what inspired the two and three fingers in Elden ring?
"Pasta fazool, I am a fool."
all of the sudden the infallibility is so easily fallible
Formosus' body, ironically enough, became miraculous and began healing sick people just by the virtue of them touching it. Apparently, God had a differing opinion. So did the people, too. They threw Stephen in jail then strangled him like a punk who owed money to the local mob.
While I like the idea of this channel, and am pleasantly surprised that you have even provided your sources at all, I must say that it's hard to take a history channel seriously which cites exclusively Wikipedia as its source of information. Wikipedia isn't often wrong, but there have been numerous cases of mistakes or intentional falsehoods slipping through the cracks, especially on more obscure articles, and that's not even to speak of the biases that the anonymous authors, with no verified credentials, can project upon whatever it is they're writing about. And regardless, varying and corroborating sources is best practices anyway.

I understand where you're coming from, but due to me being Dutch and it being my main language I used a lot of websites to find information about things which are solely in my language, because of that I decided to only take the supportive articles I used that are easily reachable by the public, that in this case being Wikipedia. Not to worry, all sources we write down in the description, this case being wikipedia, are all fact checked by us and reviewed upon. It's also important to understand that with very old events in general most of the remaining texts are written many years after the event started, which implies personal bias can be applied even more than we can expect there to be, especially because this topic involved a major religion which especially back then didn't like being put in a negative spotlight. The "truth" is most likely already forgotten, and only with educational guesses (which we can't source specifically) we can determine what's the truth and what we should put in a video!
