I've never heard that people hate Sol Ring before. I mean, me and my mates, we all love Sol Ring, and whenever a Sol Ring goes into play we go "Yep, there it is" or give slight smiles. Sometimes when somebody has a really good start and lands 5 or 6 mana on the table in turn one, well, that guy will quickly find himself focused by the rest of us when we get a bit more out. Sol Ring is just an awesome little card. I don't think I ever build a deck without Sol Ring anymore, true, but there will always be those cards that just fit in every deck. Point is, Sol Ring is a welcome and familiar card to all of us, and none of us mind it being played that much or dislike it, we actually think of it fondly.

Yea but your not looking at the advantage it provides you. If you have 6 mana in one turn with a mana crypt or something. your essentially 4 turns ahead of everybody else while everyone else only gets to play their 2nd land drop that turn. Really? The whole point of cEDH is speeding up games and allowing you to play more games every time you meet up by upping the power level as far as it can go. Stax is okay merely because its sometimes needed to allow yourself enough time for your other win conditions because its just that fast even if they may turn a cEDH gametime into a casual gametime. But land destruction and other cards that eat up an inordinate amount of time can easily turn a casual game of maybe one or two hours into a 4 hour or more slog that everyone eventually begins to grow weary of until everyone stares at their phones for most of the game or the game has to simply be abandoned. Its the opposite of cEDH and should thus be easier to understand from your perspektive.

Our group starting cutting it and games are so much more consistent and balanced now. It's wild how much sol ring messes with the games that it's in. Personally I really started getting sick of fast mana after playing games on Cockatrice; since cards don't cost money, everyone runs sol ring, mana crypt, and mana vault, even in "casual" decks. I was playing 3-5 games in a row where people were dropping fast mana on turn 1 or 2, and every time it devolved into just hoping the table could draw enough removal to answer the archenemy. Then someone else plays a smothering tithe and you can't answer it because you spent the past three turns answering the sol ring player. Going back to my playgroup always felt like a breath of fresh air. So much better to play with balanced progression, roughly symmetrical board states, and no more insta-loss games due to being the only one that doesn't draw fast mana. The sol ring format can be fun, it leads to s lot of chaos, but tbh I don't think it should be the default.

I'm one of the people that think that counterspells are the most annoying form of removal, primarily because they're the only form that other colours cannot interact with. The only way to stop a counterspell is if you're blue and also have a counter. With removal like doomblade, its controller can protect the creature, sacrifice it, change the target etc. Every colour and even colourless can interact with targeted or destruction-based removal in some way, but not counterspells.

Hot take: Counterspells, even the free ones, make games way more fun, especially if more than one player is using them. I understand that a lot of players have it in their head that the magic is the most fun when they can execute their pet strategy without any meaningful interruption but I think that with an open mind one can easily see why interactive magic is significantly more fun for a far less vocal group of players who may in reality, be the majority (I don't know, but it is a possibility). This is especially true for those players who came to EDH from other formats after the pandemic killed their local fnm scene. Me personally, I came from playing weekly reg REL modern nights at my LGS and I enjoy a lot of fair interaction in my magic. It is wholly foreign to me to just sit there and let my opponents advance their boardstate unchecked. Frowning upon that seems kind of repugnant to the idea of the game from the perspective of a former modern player. Interacting is half the game. Its where all the thinking and tight playing comes in. It makes the game more of a puzzle. Each player has to look not only at how to advance their own game but how to prevent the others from getting too far ahead. That means less tapping out, more careful plays each turn and best of all less oops I win moments for the combo players in your groups. Don't get triggered by getting got by a force of will or a pact of negation. Plan ahead. Think tactically. Use your brain. Learn to love the counter war. I for one, find games where we have a complex interaction battle is way more memorable then those where I resolve a battlecruiser and I think you will too. I recommend talking to your playgroups about upping the interaction count in your games and try it out. You might very well find that you share my feelings on this matter.

About teferi's protection, I feel it's fair but it often sees play in a situation where it feels bad. It's kinda expensive and stapely, so people who play it tends to play it in very strong decks, and when people play strong decks, other people pile on thems. One player being the archenemy and teferi protection out of 3 players actions feels really bad. This tends to be how t protection is seing play the most, that's where its reputation come from. Nobody would complain about kithkin tribal saving itself from tutored craterhoof with t protection.

for me i like to think of Drannith Magistrate as a removal check. Many people will use their commander as what gets them to a win, i've had many games where people would've won much sooner without the magistrate. for me as a players games that are *too fast* aren't fun, there need to be controlling elements to have a back and forth engagement at the table. turbo goldfishing sucks. i want there to be interactions, engagements on the stack between players, having to grind out board states and resources. to me, magistrate is the best example of that. where your deck can't be all about *your precious commander*. consider the rest of the table, get involved with other people's boards. or im just gonna win.

I often play one or 2 extra turn in simic decks, mostly to play one dumb dude late game and have a chance to attack with it, using it as pseudo blue haste, I feel that's a legitimate strategy.

Like, if it destroyed or cost XX, or even went with not being a color pie break and was like "Those creatures become 2/2s with no abilities," it would still be a powerful and versatile answer. But instead people playing Anguished Unmaking colors should consider splashing Blue for the creature removal.

In a format where deckbuilding is a form of self expression it's dulling seeing the same cards over and over. I don't think the power is the problem the ubiquitousness is. Often times power is what boots you out of the game early, so you won't be winning much more. It's a shame to me because in so many strategies using niche similar cards that can have upsides over staples is the best part. cEDH instead is more akin to 1v1 and everything goes and it's great for it, cause rule 0 in edh, at least around here, isn't taken as seriously.

  • @simonteesdale9752

Power and ubiquitousness are definitely intertwined, but it's really hard to hate a card that's so weak it does nothing. As an example, I really dislike a lot of the broken fast mana for its power and what it does to the game. Jeweled lotus is an example of high power, low ubiquitousness. Meanwhile, I see reliquary tower and Chrolo everywhere. It's basically always a mistake to include them, but I don't hate them anywhere near as badly as I do jeweled lotus.

When you have 40 life in commander, taking 3 damage roughly 50% of the time is nothing, especially if you have anyways of gaining life or protecting your life total. With Howling Mine and certain Artifacts, the part that is overlooked (and one of the bigger reasons why said cards are so disliked) is the ability to turn them off during either your Turn, or your Opponents' simply by Tapping them. Urza, Convoke, animating them and then using them for whatever including Crewing a Vehicle, Icy Manipulator effects, etc. Symmetrical effects yes and can be used in Group Hug fashion besides, but when they're used in a Stacks way or you're the only one benefitting from the cards (or not being punished by them since they're turned off during your Turn) really makes these cards even more disliked.

I agree with MOST of these, but I NEED to say this. Fast mana is ONLY an issue in the early game. You get to turn, like, 8 and you draw a Sol Ring or Mana Crypt or Chrome Mox, you might as well have drawn a land. Also, Hullbreacher was only an issue in decks like Nekusar and Xyris where the controller of it was forcing people to draw an excessive amount of cards. Demonic Consultation isn't the issue, it's Thoracle. Anyone complaining about Consultation is wrong. Grave Pact/Dictate of Erebos is only really an issue in aristocrats decks and the occasional Gary drain deck. Agent of Treachery isn't as repeatable as Memnarch. Repeating AoT is largely going to be constantly you casting blink spells to trigger it multiple time, Memnarch, all you need is Pili-Pala and Grand Architect. HOW IS GROUP HUG AN ISSUE? Howling Mine? Seriously?
