It needed to be worded better, most people won’t get it when asked like that for the first time, which is why Russ responded the way he did. The reporter could’ve said “did you think your mistakes as a team costed you the game or did the jazz just win it”.

I don't agree that the reporter's question to Westbrook was dumb. What he meant was did you guys play really bad today (you lost the game) or did the other team play exceptionally well and won . You know sometimes there's a game that you know you gave it all and still lost - the other team was just better that day, but sometimes after a loss you feel like you didn't give it all on the court and you know you are capable of more. That was the spirit of that question.

Russ is somewhat justified in avoiding the question since it makes them look bad as a team. I wouldn't be surprised if it also took him a couple of seconds to understand it given the moment. So it's understandable after some point he was probably playing dumb a bit. But all commentators pretending the question doesn't make sense is absolutely insane.

Its a common question you hear from journalists, but its also a silly question if you ask a guy like Westbrook. Maybe it was the first time Westbrook was asked that question and so his reaction was justified, or he could have been just trying to give his "trippin ni$$er" a hard time.

From a reporter, you expect an absolutely clear question that doesn’t need further evaluation or anything. For a game like basketball where you can only win or lose, the literal meaning of that question is silly. So, yeah, it’s still a dumb question. As a reporter, you shouldn’t ask questions that would have an immediate response “what do you mean by that”. It’s time waste.

Superteam failures have happened before, and far more often than a lot of people anticipate. Shaq, Kobe, GP, Malone.. Kobe, Dwight, Nash, Gasol.. Bron, Wade, Bosh in their early years.. Durant doesn't get enough credit for actually meeting superteam expectations straight away. You may get your conflicting feelings sooner than you think.

What's this drama about the reporter's question? It's a very common question used by journalist in every competition in the world for decades. It's a typical question. Did you lose because you are a worse team, or did you lose because you played worse than your rival, even though being a better team?
