The Most Dangerous Hood in Belize

Belize has one of the highest murder rates in the world, 37.79 per 100 000 inhabitants. It makes it fifth dangerous country in the world in 2022. Most of the problems are caused by the gangs which live in the infamous southern parts of Belize City. I wanted to see the situation with my own eyes and visited this sketchy neighborhood.

    Being from a “bad neighborhood” in America..My advice to you is to listen more and sayless. You told on yourself when you made a statement about the gangs before the guy told you about them. He just you was heading to a bad neighborhood, but you informed him you knew about the area when you ask if that’s where the gangs where. That’s an imply that you knew what you were going into. That’s a easy way to find what you are looking for. Stay safe.

    I was a serving soldier in Belize in the 70s it was always a little lawless in Mesopotamia, but none of the killings that are happening today, this is all thanks to the drugs that pass through Belize. A sad state of affairs, especially as most Belizean's are really friendly, like the guy who walked you out of there. Over all, Belize is still a safe place to visit, but like all countries, it has some bad areas. I have family who live in the area, and sadly, more than one of them have been murdered in recent times, all in their teens.

Belize has a lot of corruption and the economy only keeps on getting worst. We drove around Belize city including the south side in the morning time and it was ok. We did see some kids riding bikes throwing gang signs. Other than that, there was good fast food restaurants in the city and fresh tropical fruits.

    Reminds me of Kenya. Lots of people there want to be your "friend." But that can be dangerous or even fatal, especially when someone wants to take you somewhere regardless if it's a man or woman (they often work in teams and will spike your drink or the bartender can for a cut of the proceeds). Kidnapping and killing of foreign tourists is all to common. It's very easy to lose your life over the perceived idea that you are a "rich" foreigner even though you may have very little. Best bet is to stay out of areas like this, especially at night (very foolish).

Not saying that it’s not a hot zone but I used to walk that very street every single day to go catch the city bus to go to school and not once have I felt unsafe or been robbed or bothered. And the subtitle in the beginning is wrong. That young man did not say he was going to do coke. He said “I am going up here to the laundry to do clothes.” Evidenced by the laundromat shown less than 2 minutes later

    I'm tired of people saying it has one of the highest murder rates, ofc it will, to make the rate you need to use the average population. The population in Belize hasn't even passed half a million so ofc it will sound higher, I'm pretty sure America has more deaths and murders per week than Belize but because of America's population size it looks like a small murder rate, for instance; 1/2 = 50%. While 5/15 = 33.3%, do you see what I'm saying? It's not as bad as people say it is.

  • @LittleshamelessViking

    @LittleshamelessViking

    Жыл бұрын

    Yes, that's the meaning of murder rate. It's the amount of homicides compared to 100 000 inhabitants, not the total amount. Surely countries with larger population have higher total amount of murders. Still there are countries with smaller population that have lower murder rate.

Even Angola, I could travel into the heart of bloodthirsty areas but I was fine, despite not knowing Portuguese. America is worst. Just observe the list of serial killers there, as well as senseless killings. No, thanks USA is worst than Belize. Even Afghanistan is way better in terms of safety. But Belize (I stand to be corrected) seems a piece of cake. Not dangerous at all. If you can be guided by the local, then it's safe. In SA your guide might lead you astray but there are good people as well.
