I knew Ken back in the day, we used to go to his house out in Corona and use his practice track, he was one of a kind and a super nice guy

It didn't rob Kenny of the world title - it robbed Les Collins of the world title.....

Unsure you can predict that as had they DQ Bruce then Carter could well of won his last heat to take the title. Had they re-run all riders this event then either Bruce or Kenny would have taken it still competing for the win.

I've been watching speedway for over 40 years and I've never seen Ivan Mauger loose his temper like that. He was a gentleman.

Oh I saw him do it once at Newcastle during a "silver sash" race when he was so furious he left his bike on track which isn't a sensible thing to do.

Bruce Penhall dominated all the SoCal tracks back in the 70s before he went to Europe to ride in the big leagues. He was the only rider to start 50 yards back in a handicap race and be in the front and pulling away by the third lap. In a scratch race...forget about it! I sure miss those days of buying a ticket for 2 to 3 bucks on a Wednesday night at IMS in San Berdoo . Good times!

You're very confused about speedway racing in the state of California in the 70's. The guy that crushed everyone in speedway racing was The Master - Mike Bast. There's never been a American rider with his talent and don't start in about Mike Bast never won a World Championship. He had nothing to prove and like I've told many people,why in the hell would you want to leave the beach life of California and the money Mike Bast was making to go overseas. Didn't make any sense and that's why he didn't do it. Mike Bast could have been a World Champion without a doubt. Now everyone go ahead and tell me how great Penhall and Hancock were. They're not Mike Bast and wasn't in the same zip code.

Many riders start 15 mtrs (not 50 yds!) back and win the race. 50 yrds 150ft behind and win! what was Penhall a bloody rocket.LOL.

Orson Cart Ya that was the 70s. 50 yards in America is only 150 feet mate. In a handicap race the start/finish line would be the zero which was the middle of the front straightaway. He would start right where turn four and the straightaway met. The track in San Berdoo was only an 1/8 mile though. Made for some tight dicey racing

Bruce Penhall wasn't a good rider, Penhall was a great rider but like I stated he wasn't Mike Bast. Bruce Penhall could outrun any rider in the state of California before he went to Europe and when he returned from Europe back to California but there's 1 rider that he couldn't get the best of and like I stated before it was Mike Bast. Mike Bast taught Bruce Penhall everything he knew about speedway racing and Bruce Penhall said The greatest United states speedway rider there's ever been without a doubt is The Master Mike Bast. Bottom line is...... if you ever watched speedway racing in the United states of America in the 70's to this day you know who's the best rider. There no debating this subject.

Ok Jim. I was there and saw Mike, Steve, Christian, Oxley, Faria, Ford, Lucero, Schwartz, Sandona, Ferrel, Fetzing, Woods, Kelly and Shawn, Cook and even Hancock when he he was a junior. Just my take on it. But to with regards to Mike leaving to go to race in the European leagues, and this is just my opinion, every professional athlete strives to be the worlds best. That to me is the mark of a great competitor. There is an old saying that goes, “Sometimes the student becomes the master”. Hats off to Mike for his accomplishments as multi time state and national champ. Why don’t we debate something like who is the the better guitarist Hendrix or SRV. Or who is the the better band Zeppelin or Sabbath or who is the better comedian Pryor or Murphy. All can make good to excellent points and they may be valid or not that’s what makes this country great! Thanks for the reply. Steve

There is actually film footage of the incident that proved Kittleson made the right call. Carter went down on his own. Phil Crump who arguably had the best seat in the house agreed with Carter's exclusion.

Holden308 you say Carter went down on his own - that's incredibly naive. If you followed speedway or know anything about it you would know that riders don't just go down and into the fence on there own. There are two key points in this video. The first one is the incident itself - at 7:46/47 it is clear that there is contact whereby Penhall's back wheel kicks out slightly just enough to make contact with Carter's left leg and his front wheel, taking his balance away. The second point in the video is at 7:23 when Bruce Penhall says he felt something and it was Carter, hence confirming the physical contact at 7:46/47 when Penhall's back wheel came out slightly into Carter's left leg just enough to displace Carter's leg and front wheel. If you can't see that then you should've gone to Specsavers as they say.

Personally, I think Penhall was correct that when he passed Carter that he was not in his peripheral view, therefore, Carter had to make a better decision to get the bike away from Penhall. Great Race. Great Times. I sure miss being a little kid watching these races in San Bernardino in the late 70s. Bring back these bikes.

I've never seen this perspective before. I remember the race very well as I was in the stands just above the crash. I remember when it happened I was really unhappy as I was sure Bruce was going to get excluded, then shocked when the other guy was. Bruce would occasionally show up at our/his local which was the OC Fairgrounds. That summer I raced the Jr class, but preferred MX. By sheer luck I beat Greg Hancock in my first race, I never made a main event after that. I wound up selling my bike to Billy Hamill - it was his first speedway bike.

Speedway rules changed that day... no balls!

Penhall cut his teeth on a tough racing circuit, in southern California. Carter did not. That is why he was not able to intimidate Penhall.

Whatever the rights or wrongs of this decision are, I think it’s incredible that the referee only chooses to view video of the race footage after the event with a journalist. That’s like VAR in football making a decision the following day after the match. Only in Speedway.

Carter fell off, not deliberately, but because he was pushing too hard to get past , he was all over Penhall like a rash, that’s racing simple. The referee was ultimately proved right in his decision to exclude Carter. And Carters claim that he was robbed of the World title by the decision was also incorrect. It was Les Collins who lost out.

@@barryotoole6990 Yes it's all about opinions at the end of the day, and your entitled to yours, but I do think you should listen to the people in the know, and particularly those there on the night. Kittleson the referee was ultimately proved right in his exclusion of Carter, and Phil Crump who had the best seat in the house agreed. Carter simply pushed too hard and fell off realising he couldn't get past Bruce. And perhaps looking to get Penhall excluded instead of himself. But it backfired. But Carter learned from his tutor Mauger in how to lay his bike down.

I would be delighted to know when indeed i was there on the night with my brother we attended a lot of meets through 80s - mid 90s. .. On the night there weas a lot of opinions so there was..

I believe the video is quite telling. Penhall and Carter were battling to go after the Leader, both wanted to win this race. In the turn leading up to the crash, Penhall was not going to let Carter pass on the outside so Penhall having a slight lead pushed Carter into to wall. Carter had no where to go without letting off of the throttle. Two professional racers going at it. Great race.

Simply not true. You can't just clatter another rider's front wheel and claim you're in front nor can you can lead by half a length and run your opponent into the fence.

I spoke to Peter Collins at his book signing last year in Manchester and he said both riders should of been excluded for dangerous riding.

Never been a big speedway fan but, rubbing is racing. In general, don't dish it up if you can't take it home.

Watched this hundreds of times and only ever come to the same conclusion, I can’t see it any other way ... I don’t understand why Carter dropped the bike ..

I’ve watched this so many times over the years. I reckon Carter was put out wide and Penhall’s rear wheel put him in the wall. You can see Penhall kick the back end out in his body as Carter has the front wheel alongside. Carter would have had another chance to get by on the next corner though. He was climbing all over him. Didn’t like Penhall. On a side note however, I feel Carter lost his way mentally when Ivan started managing him. He was the most talented rider out there but started to become entitled and it showed with the lying bikes down on the track tactics that Ivan had been prone to do a couple of times in his great career too when things weren’t always going his way. RIP both though. I’m sure they’ll be still playing hell about it on the other side!

Nervo 63 to be fair the US riders going way back in all bike racing cut their teeth on the loose stuff and it has always given them an edge in bike control ..... in my memory Kenny Roberts in the seventies through to the eighties with the Transatlantic Challenge boys, Shwantz, Rainey, Mamola etc. class field. Penhall was good but back then his ruthlessness wasn’t an accepted part of his talent. Probably an accepted attitude nowadays comparing to the win at all costs mentality required to be No.1 in motorsports. Schumacher was a borderline cheat at times in F1 to gain an advantage, as was Senna, despite both being off the scale talented, at times they would do some crazy stuff to win at all costs. History forgets their in race tactics and the records just show wins and titles. If drivers and riders want to be successful they have to dislike each other and use that too probably. There was no love lost between these two ☺️ ...... I remember some really decent US speedway riders from when I was a boy. One of the most popular guys was Scott Autrey Who I think rode for Exeter. Great times. Great smells. The aroma of Castrol R still strong in my mind.

Really bad to tell from what you see in the clip with the action the TV director chose to show. You don't see what went on leading up to the disputed incident. Looked to be argy bargy from both parties tbh. At first glance and watching it through a number of times it can appear that the guy deliberately assisted the guy behind by kicking out the back wheel. I would imagine once committed to a line not much you can do, but putting yourself on the outside like that, you're relying on good nature of the guy your racing entirely. Which if things had happened previous to this there ain't gunna be much. Even if it was the correct decision (don't know) the Referee seemed very reluctant to even give a second glance and justify what he saw, only giving more rise to those who thought it was a poor decision or fix.

Yorkshire folk are always moaning! Penhall was clearly in front and Carter should have backed off. Peter Collins certainly showed em how its done! He was a fantastic rider. Go Belle Vue Aces!

Carter cost Les Colins the world championship through his antics in that race. Carter was never world class. He did not have the right state of mind, too unstable.

That young man was robbed even though I’m American I now wrong when I see it, Penhall should have protested, but he was just a kid also.

Ive watched this over a million times... Carter tucked his front end. Maybe on purpose... Im sad about Carters life. He was a great champion. Bruce never raced again which was odd to me.

I was at that race! Carter was racing dirty, Bruce, just handled business and whooped his ass. The entire stadium was on fire when Bruce won. Carter deserved it.

I used to race short track in the late 60's. I saw nothing wrong here. just some fine racing.

You have to compete with your head and decide when and how to compete, not run into something without your head and then get angry when you do some shit. Carter himself was to blame for his fall, what else was he pushing when he needed to know what was going to happen. It is necessary to think with the head and it sometimes happens that it is necessary to take the gas from the bike and make a new plan for the attack.

Didn't see a problem, both were going for the world title, that's racing. The commentators were making more of it than was warranted. Carter was the one elbowing on the previous lap to get past than he ran wide, he could have backed off the throttle before he went into the wall.

you know that penhall was turning left on the straight? what was carter supposed to do, he had to elbow him to get him off! both gave as good as they got, in the incident that matters, penhall caused carter to crash, he was lucky he didnt get excluded. their rivalry was great and this race is still debated to this day and always will be, even though penhall proved he never touched him, i still think his wheel knocked kennys left handlebar, hence he fell...

Hard one to call yes Bruce was in front that had been tussling, yes guy in front chooses his line. But Bruces rear wheel flicks out rather strangely just before Carter goes off? We will never know, but i didnt see Bruce go over to see was he ok... strange

Watched Kenny from him being a sixteen year old, hard charging talented rider....but never in Bruce Penhalls class.....Kenny had the option to throttle back at the crucial moment bt knew if he did his race was over....

I spoke to Peter Collins about it and he said both should of been excluded for dangerous riding.

7:20 "ive never even seen him after i went by him" well... thats a clear lie. if he hasnt seen Carter on the outside line this man shouldnt race bikes at all but get a certificate that hes legally blind so someone can help him. not saying carter raced fair at all. to me its a normal racing accident.

Ultimately a very tragic character, but Kenny Carter could moan like a good 'un. Yes, he and Penhall were clealy bumping each other before - but going around that corner Penhall doesn't actually touch him and Carter falls because he is pushing it too hard.

All four back in!

@@PiousMoltar Most have biased points of view & usually see things from a different angle. The referee has a better view than most, but there are occasions when elsewhere is better...but "elsewhere" is different depending on where the incident is & you never know where that is going to be. Later replays show they did not touch when Carter went down. Penhall has said "I gave him no room but did not knock him off". They were racing for the world title: their most important meeting of the season. There was no way either was going to back off. Penhall was never going to just let him through. Carter had to keep trying for half a chance.

As they say in the former Soviet Union, Carter, "tough shitsky" ......you lost ............................

i think it was a racing incident...it was 1982 world championship speedway...getting knocked around happened...it was a good call

@The Stigs English Cousin ... other footage not shown during either the US or British telecasts proved that Penhall didn't hit Carter. Kenny went down all on his own.

@The Stigs English Cousin ... certainly was. Carter was a talented rider, but a perennial whinger. He probably spent more time on the phone to the referee than most teenage girls did to their friends.

He had a bike length on him technically this is the right decision sometimes speedway is unfair but thats racing you loose some you win some

Have a look a few more times. Bruce had his rear tire even with the other guys front wheel and kept drifting out, which took out his front wheel. There really wasn't much he could do to avoid that accident.

@@shanerr7252 Nope, we were up in the seats. I hadn't thought of that race for decades. The feeling I had when that happened came flooding back when I saw this video. We were sure Bruce was going to be excluded from what we saw. I think most everyone felt the same as there was a bit of a gasp when it went the other way. Now seeing the view here, yeah, Bruce definitely drifted across his front wheel and should have been excluded. Also, the speed they were going was really high. The track was probably bigger than the big European tracks. San Bernardino had the longest track in So Cal at the time and you could have probably fit three of them inside the Coliseum. Watching speedway at OC Fairgrounds on Friday nights back then was awesome.

Just saw another video and it does look a bit iffy. Although the call was that Carter laid the bike down on his own, I just can't see that a rider would do that at that speed. Maybe on a shorter track, but not that one. BTW, I completely forgot about Longtrack Speedway. Those tracks look bigger than the LA track.

@@jasonc5304 yeah long track speedway is nuts about 100mph compared to 60 to 70 on the standard track i love the la coliseum the old Supercross battles there were the best up and down the ramp was sick

I think it was fair does.

The way it looked to me Bruce was clearly in front of Carter coming out of turn 2. So what Carter said is BS....Not to mention before reaching turn 1 the kid had his hand out trying to grab Penhall's handlebars and elbowing him. He tried grabbing at Penhall all the way down the front straight. And it wasn't the first time Carter was grabbing at Penhall...He did the same thing to other riders too when he'd get in close. After watching the replay over and over again, it was clear to me that Carter was trying to turn into Bruce coming out of turn 2, to try hit Penhall's rear tire and sweep Penhall off his bike but instead he went down himself....🤔 The Kid was always crying about something....lol 😥😥😥🤣🤣🤣 And it says Bruce Penhall was cheating? It looked the other way around to me.... I saw BP race for years at Costa Mesa Speedway at Orange County Fairgrounds. He always raced clean. He didn't need to cheat....

Carter's fault.

A Briton was winning easily and would have won definitely if the race hadn’t of been stopped. Totally unfair.

The whining needs to STOP! Why can't racers just RACE! It is what it is! Get them next time stop CRYING!

It was 100% the correct call. Kenny was behind and should have shut off. And besides that Kenny was a Kunt! Coward murder of his wife and kids. Total arsehole!

Seen much tougher racing than this. Stick Nicki Pedersen in there he'll show them how it's done lol.

Nicki Pedersen couldn't live with those two....dirty and overated.

Both riders could have been excluded on the preceding lap but when the Yorkshireman visited the hot dog stand there was no contact - as was proven by the CHiPs camera angle - and Tore Kittelsen was spot on in his decision. The Yorkshireman was NEVER good enough to better Bruce in World events without taking a dive - even in their White City clash he turned left and laid it on BP leaving neither anywhere to go but the deck. Fortunately The Yorkshireman never won a World Title - he was arrogant enough without that mantle - before his final heinous acts.

Andy Hawthorne Not at all petty then, wether you liked the man or not Kenny was English, read Alan Carters book and you may understand why he turned out how he did, before you say we all have to deal with tragedy, we do, but some cope better than others, being mentally weak doesn’t make him a bad person, he clearly reached the end of his tether, but it’s easy to call someone who can’t defend themselves isn’t it.

I disliked the man, his arrogance, his dirty tactics - and his hatred of BP - when he was alive (and you'd struggle to find 7 riders who had any time for him either. ) Alan Carter's book - nor 'Tragedy' the story of the man - excuse his act of cowardice in shooting his lovely wife IN THE BACK then walking down and EXECUTING her as she still lived before his final act of cowardice thus leaving 2 children orphaned. In fact I've met and spoken to his brother and he makes no excuses for him and has no forgiveness in his heart for him either. And neither does BP - a man orphaned by tragedy not by Murder - who won't even speak his name. Had he taken the cowards way out just for himself it would have been bad enough but EXECUTING that woman should see him rot in Hell.

@@mickhutchins7737 oh and I don't support riders just because they're English - I'd rather stick blunt pins in my eyes and drink acid than support the likes of The Yorkshireman, or Lee etc let alone modern day riders like Cook, Kennett, Lambert, and Garrity.

No matter what happened Penhal was going to win the title ...it was in the script he cheated to get more American riders there ...meeting sponsored by chips ref sponsored by chips ...
