The Most Chaotic Super Smash Bros. Hype Cycle

Ойындар

Let me take you back to the distant year, 2018. Horrifying, I know. A blossoming boy unsure of his path in life begins his final year of High School with only one thing on his mind, Super Smash Brothers Ultimate. This is going to be another personal one. It’s a deep dive, so if you don’t like me you may want to sit this one out. Let me tell you the story of the 10 month internet hype cycle of one of my favorite games of all time. Making… one of my favorite experiences of all time.
Special thanks to @Saltydkdan @ZeroOmens and @switch1e for taking over some of the story.
And also special thanks to all the creators featured in this story. Despite the rocky timeline, I have nothing but the upmost respect for these people to this day!

Wonder if he will touch the Sabi stuff when he gets to that. The hacking Nintendo stuff is wild/"good content" but some dark shit happens there and its also pretty hard to document I imagine given a lot of the major posts straight up don't exist anymore being it was tied to a private discord.

Had this floating in my YT recs for a while and boy should I have clicked it sooner. This video was the 8 hour version of the Ratatouille flashback scene. Heck it could be double the length and I’d still enthusiastically watch it all. No other video captures the experience of being a high schooler Nintendo nerd in 2018 so viscerally. I was also there, obsessively watching Smash speculation KZread and scrolling r/SmashBros for hours. I also remember exactly where I was for every direct and reveal and sharing that experience with my little brother. Every twist and turn in the leak cycle, joining Team Fake in the Grinch Wars, getting anal about spoiler avoidance when the game broke street date…finally getting to play it after being livid about my copy shipment getting delayed for three days, storming through World of Light and getting to that gnarly endgame completely unspoiled (Master Hand is my favorite Nintendo character if that tells you anything lol, I was already feeling really good that I had predicted prerelease that rescuing the real one amongst Galeem’s army of clones was going to be a plot point, but then got hit with *that* mission, just incredible), and making cherished memories with friends and family for years to come…I definitely got emotional watching and listening to this. Good on you for playing the entire Lifelight trailer. Utter chills. I felt like I was listening to the song and watching the trailer for the first time all over again. (That Galleom reveal at the end had me more excited than 80% of the character reveals because we Subspaceheads up in here lol) Overall, what a phenomenal video. I loved hearing and relating to all your personal stories and it was such a privilege walking down every step of this memory lane. It’s something I never want to forget, and when the next hype train inevitably rolls into the station, I can’t wait to hop on that wild ride all over again with you all. It will truly feel like coming home.

50:57 I love how everyone thought Vergeben was trustworthy until he said minecraft and the grinch leak happened. Smash Speculation has 2 sides: 1. Trying to predict what characters nintendo will add to the game realistically 2. People looking for any reason why their favorite characters are going to be revealed next. Most people are in group 2 😅

Even dedicated smash streamers & youtubers ignored that the smash character poll had criteria: any potential smash characters had to be first-and-foremost video game characters. So Sakurai already told us Grinch, Goku, Scrooge mcduck, etc were never going to be in the game.

seriously, please cover many and all pokemon hype/leak cycles because that was actually a video I was trying to find that compiles all fake/real leaks that occured over the whole franchise but it would only ever just a handful of videos that shows the same ones over and over again. Also this video is the exact kinda research and retrospective I love, while I was somewhat with the hype train for smash, I was never as deep in it like my friends were and just stopped looking at leaks before the grinch leak stuff occured and you FINALLY showed me what the hell it even was. Can't wait for the pokemon one if you plan on doing it, please take ur time like this one, I was more than happy to listen and look up from what I was doing in the span of 2 days while I was finishing up some projects! As a quick edit: I literally had no idea about Mach Rider being suggested as a fighter for smash, so thank you for the info as well!

I just watched this entire video in one sitting and it’s now 1:30 AM. I have school tomorrow. I forgot that I’m in the final semester of my masters degree and not an incoming freshman anymore. Thank you for making this. I am your exact target demographic. A 24-year-old looking back at my 18-19 year old self who grasped onto every aspect of this hype cycle because it was one of my most consistent sources of joy in a dark time in my life. I didn’t even have rehearsal because we had just finished “You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown” and I didn’t do a show over the summer or fall that year. I have so many memories of playing Ultimate with my friends during my freshman year of college. 8 player smash on a movie screen in the lobby of our dorm building while we drank Sprite Cranberry. Crying laughing after the Sans mii fighter reveal. I even got to play the demo early at one of those mythical tours, which was one of my favorite days ever period. I remember seeing PapaGenos videos as they released, reading theories on GameXplain comments, memorizing Etika’s reaction to the Ultimate reveal, watching every single reaction to every piece of game footage, refusing to accept Box Theory, and expecting to see 7 Grinch Leak characters in the final direct only to be bamboozled by Ken, Incineroar, and a plant. I was always rooting for Isaac Goldensun and Erdrick despite having absolutely no idea who they were. When most people make a KZread video, they’ll lean toward making content that can appeal to tons of people, but you’re different. You tell your own story before anything else. Maybe people will get all the references and maybe they won’t. That’s so admirable. I think I understood basically every one you made, and it made the video feel a lot more personal. An 8-hour love letter to a very specific time period in your life, my life, and probably thousands of other lives. Super niche references that people never thought they’d hear again. Not sure where to put this, but I really enjoyed your story about the cast list smash tournament. Organizing a tournament around everyone’s stage time is a very difficult task. It was so poetic that the tournament ended during the final show. To me, that’s what smash bros is all about. Bringing people together, regardless of skill level, to play this fun game about fighting Nintendo characters. It’s about the celebration of an unlikely victor from an unlikely crowd in an unlikely setting. Backstage shenanigans are some of my favorite parts of theatre, and this sounds like it was the absolute peak of the moments that lead us to almost missing our cues. When it was all over, everyone took their bow after the tournament and then took their bow onstage. I was obsessed with your Izzy video and am equally obsessed with this one. Keep making these love letters. I’d love to hear about the DLC hype cycle and/or Pokémon hype cycles. Of course, those would be after you take a well-deserved break. Whether that’s a real break or Sakurai’s definition break, time will tell. Even 5 years later, I still can’t believe the Grinch leak wasn’t real. This video, on the other hand, was definitely real.

I listened to this entire video over one 12-hour workday, and this opened a floodgate of memories: things I hadn't thought about in years. I remember watching every Smash speculation video too, and I could almost immediately tell "oh, that's Billybo10k or LaxChris" when you would refer to videos. And as an aside: you are probably the only person I've seen who's accurately covered just how nuts and in-depth the Grinch leak was instead of just laughing it off by saying "it blurry so idk how anyone believed this lolXD." I was on team Grinch and have been kinda baffled by the retrospective clowning of it like it never had anything going for it. Either way, this was a phenomenal video. One of my favorites on the whole platform. I really hope the KZread algorithm picks this up at some point.

Thanks for doing this video dude. It’s nice to see someone else who was so actively involved in that whole pre-release cycle putting it all into words, it’ll serve as a really nice compendium of that whole period as well move into the next chapter of Smash. Was a strangely nostalgic and somewhat emotional experience revisiting all of the old discourse and leaks leading up to launch in a year that was pretty formative for me as well. It was a blast watching this and I eagerly look forward to the months and months of your content leading up to the inevitable next Smash.

Absolutely incredible recap video that hit me with a twofold wave of nostalgia. Brawl was the hot game coming out when *I* was in high school, and it truly did turn me into a lifelong fan of video games. Like a good chunk of my generation, I found some of my favorite games through it. It’s genuinely really nice to hear you sincerely talk about the emotional response you had to Ultimate, as well as take me through some things I missed and hear some names I hadn’t heard in years. (And honestly feel really seen by the emotional response to the Everyone is Here trailer. It still gives me genuine chills!) Random notes: It's funny that you weren't super invested in the Smash 4 hype cycle. I lived and died that hype cycle. I would talk about it nonstop, and I remember Lucas being revealed and genuinely being pissed that I had to wait a few months before I could play as him and just randomly telling friends and family how excited I was for him. I also remember before that being terrified for the entirety of Smash 4's hype cycle on whether Ness was returning. People told me I was insane for being worried, but they took *so* long to show him off. I was glad they kept Mario and Link pretty similar in Smash Ultimate. I think for me personally I wanted Smash to stop taking content out and swapping out movesets would have been doing that. Sadly you were wrong about Pokémon company but I admire your bravery lmao I was sad Marth had an English voice, I grew attached to his Japanese voice weirdly. I was sad that transformation final smashes were removed, I feel like there was fun in the player having control in some of them. I was super disappointed with Smash Ultimate's soundtrack, save for a few tracks. I think Smash 4 was better and Brawl was a LOT better. watched the first 2 hours today. still a lot to do

Its just a very cozy atmosphere! This video also made me realize you aren't a 250k+ subscriber youtuber which feels insane to me. Thank you for all the videos c: I look forward to the future ones!

Really interesting video. I’m the same age as you, but wasn’t super involved in the hype cycle before the game came out. It’s really interesting hearing about it going back. My dark horse pick was always Raz from Psychonauts. Wasn’t gonna happen, but y/k

Omg I found you through the Total Drama videos but this was just beautiful. I remember having just started high school and the march direct I nearly s*** myself. I was just as obsessed as you and every single leak that was mentioned I was the leo dicaprio meme of pointing at the screen. I didn't own a switch until the next christmas (2019) where apparently they had 1 more smash switch left. I didn't care though I was so hyped. Anyways in the course of the next 5 years of getting the game it's become likely my most played game of all time, and I still play it nearly everyday :) anyways thanks for such a beautiful time capsule of a chaotic year

Smash speculation took over my life in this period, so it's pretty cool and surreal reliving almost all of this. Also, I guess this proves I'm still that person, rather than going back to sleep, kept myself awake to watch an 8+ hour video on Smash speculation in 2018.

the story ending at 2:50:00 reminds me of when I would go to a place in Nashville called Cori's Doghouse, order the Cincinnati-style and an onion ring so often that when I moved away and went in like a year later the big guy who runs it said "Didn't think we'd see you again, Cincy" and gave me a free one. Pretty cool guys. (Go to the location east of town; it's better.) The story about you being smacked out tired during school because of work also resonates. Teachers just do not care about what their students are going through in life. I HAD to work or we would've lost everything at the time... and instead I was just getting disciplined for not being completely lucid. Then after school I continued working 100 hour weeks out of a false sense of loyalty *and stayed when I became homeless*. Not trying to one-up; your stories simply resonate deeply within me. Thank you for sharing.

I am very much enjoying the video tho and I don't even care about smash. I'm just vibing with you talking about something that only vaguely entered my life through the memes that seeped over into whatever I was watching at the time

Flashback to when I got to the 16 minute mark of the video and said "I bet I'm halfway through the video, I should pause to get a snack," only to roll over and notice that there were over 8 hours left in the video. I ended up watching the first 7.5 hours at 1.75x speed, all in a row. Probably not the best option, but I'm gonna go to sleep now. Anyway... I wanted to note how amazing of a trip this video has been for me. It's bringing back so many memories. In the Fall of 2018, I was in my Junior year of High School, and it's really the last year of High School that I really remember. Senior year had me hyper focused on how I felt about a girl I liked having a boyfriend-- and then COVID stripped away the entire 2nd half of the school year. But the events of Junior year are very important and memorable to me. With Smash being such a big topic at the time, pretty much every meme I shared at the school lunch table was smash related. Pretty much all I could think about was Smash. My freaking AP Language Arts teacher somehow got the game early and people who don't even own switches were talking about how cool the World of Light trailer was. Piranha Plant's reveal brought back a stupid Petey Piranha drawing I made a few years prior, which led to me making him an OC that became a huge part of my online identity. And part of the reason I made a Twitter account was so I could upload screenshots from Smash easier. I don't even really like Smash Bros, but the pre-launch hype cycle deeply affected me, and everything I did in 2018. Grinch leak was really the only speculation I was deeply into, but there has been a lot of other leaks I _do_ recognize amongst all these ones I've never heard anything about. This video has been a ride back in time, and it's been a blast to watch. I genuinely cannot believe we're coming up on 6 years since the reveal trailer. I remember being so proud that I realized it was Smash Bros instantly, while most everyone else didn't realize till Inkling Girl turned around and looked up at the fire ball.

I have vague memories of this hype cycle cause of my brothers, d&d group, and boyfriend at the time. I game, but I have dexterity issues and hate playing smash. I stayed up late to finish this video despite needing to get up early for a trip. Andrew, if I can call you Andrew, I can't express how much I love your content. Your throught process and interests are so similar to mine. You're one of the only creators who is actually close to my age, tax bracket, and upbringing so I actually really relate to most things you say or reference. Overall you bring this sense of peace for me cause you remind me that there ARE nerd/gamer/meme dudes out there who are good people, and thinking back to times like this hype cycle, sometimes it's hard to remember that. If you pivot to smash, I will simply be a part of a hype cycle for a game I likely won't play! If we get more cartoon/nostolgia/whatever, I'm certain I'll watch it too. Keep doin you, your content is sick as hell!!

It took me like 4 days to watch this and it was worth it. I vaguely remember the 2018 Smash hype cause my brothers were really excited (and thinking it was funny Piranha Plant was playable the memes after it) and this video took me back to 2018 where I was also still in high school. It was weird going on that journey with you but also fun Also just throwing it out there, I wonder if they could do Subspace Emissary again but as a separate game. Idk how games work but all those characters being together with a story line would be cool (I’m also in denial lol)

The ending for me was kind of bittersweet, I really appreciate seeing a retrospective of an adult gamer looking back on their teenage self being excited about a game. Reminds me of myself but instead of smash bros, it would be halo 3. Can relate, looking forward to your next video andrew!

I didn’t watch this video yet, I need to find time but I just want to say as a freshman in highschool during the reveal, I don’t know if another game will come along and get me this hyped again. I’m not sure if this was special because it was smash ultimate or I was at the age where I was really excited about this, but it was a good feeling and I want it back. While I was typing this I realized I felt the same way about the new total drama releasing so their is hope.
