Adult Swim’s BIGGEST Missed Opportunities

Фильм және анимация

It’s Adult Swim time again, and there’s a lot I could’ve talked about. The block has been through a roller coaster year of nostalgic cartoons and long shows getting movie finales. While I could talk about any of those multi-season shows, I’ve always preferred the shows that had very short stints. And what’s shorter than only having episode? Over its 22 year career, Adult Swim has been pitched a lot of ideas that never really came to fruition, and that’s what I’m here to talk about. To see which pilots had potential, to uncover the drama behind them, and honestly to just talk about KZreadrs I like.
Special thanks to Fellow Swimmers: @ZeroOmens @JayLatne @TheDanTheManShow for putting their voices to the cyber war. There’s no way I could’ve read all of those posts and kept my cool.

A lot of the info we have on the Hellbenders pilot comes from a now deleted update video on Zach’s channel titled “The Worst Update Ever (Sorry)”. Zach himself does touch on how Adult Swim would only pick up the show if the name was changed. Yes, it was because of Mr. Pickles being a show abiut hell but also Your Pretty Face Is Going to Hell. And i believe it was one of the later episodes of SleepyCabin where Chris and Zach lamented on how dumb of a move that was. But it of course has worked out for the both of them. However, in the same update video, Zach also mentions how HB was in fact picked up by a “3rd party” after a literal year and a half of negotiations. The leaked pilot actually seems to be for whoever the 3rd party was which I’m pretty sure is still a mystery to this day. And going with what you described the AS pitch being “the worst pitch AS had ever seen”, this was also mentioned in a SleepyCabin episode (I’m pretty sure it was the same episode in fact). The reason being just that Chris and Zach had never pitched a show before and came completely unprepared. One specific moment I remember them saying was that one AS executive noticed how the characters were Chris and Zach’s self inserts because the real Chris and Zach wore the same exact outfits to the pitch. The duo being dumbfounded because they didn’t even mean to do that I know if i actually put all this same effort into something useful and/or meaningful that I would be in such a better place in my life but I can’t help having such an encylopedic brain on pop culture. Its who i am

If anyone is interested in the tf2 comics, while I'll always recommend them, keep in mind Valve pulled a Valve and didn't finish them. The last comic was released six years ago with the 7th and final comic either still in the eternal works, or just scrapped completely. And it ends on a massive cliff hanger. So.... enjoy!

I think Chris and Zack also admitted that Hellbenders just didn't work on adult swim like you said it didn't work in the longer format. I think it was on a podcast episode they said this but they also did it (podcast) infrequently after like a year then another year then another then they ended it. So I don't know where it actually falls in the timeline, I don't know (obviously) what happen but am trying to go off what I remembered what they said.

Welcome to Eltingville is fantastic because it's ahead of its time and essentially a failed adaptation of Evan Dorkin's comic series. Dorkin published the tales of The Eltingville Club in different mags, mainly his Dork Comics series at Dark Horse, throughout the 90's and early 2000's. He and his wife and fellow creator Sarah Dyer also wrote for several animated series including episodes of Superman the Animated Series and Space Ghost Coast 2 Coast. If you enjoyed the pilot, you should check out the comics. They're a snapshot of nerd culture in those decades and still hold up as a loving critique of the culture and all of its negative aspects, with the final comic being cherry on top.

So just wanted to give a couple points to give you some extra context to some of the things you mentioned as an OG swimmer that was already out of high school when [as] premiered 1. When you mentioned about the representation of nerd culture and how it’s written, Welcome to Eltingville was an adaptation of Evan Dorkin’s Dork & The Eltingville Club, one of the greatest independent comics of the 90’s that was insanely steeped in nerd culture. The guy definitely knew his shit, and there’s more to why they passed on his show, Lazzo had basically stolen and changed another one of his books Milk & Cheese into another show on Cartoon Network, so there was a bit of bad blood between them. I still remember the night they premiered it, it was the same night the did Korgoth, and That Crook’s Sip (which was later reworked into Freaknik the musical) 2. Maybe it was the difference in age when it came out but I thought Cheyenne Cinnamon was great, and MF DOOM had also appeared in perfect hair forever and I think an episode of either 12 oz mouse or squidbillies before that too. From that same night of pilots, Totally for Teens was reworked or spun off into Mostly for Millennials 3. The Sir Willips Brightlymore alias was a callback to a sketch from Mr. Show with Bob Odenkirk and David Cross. The sketch featured a character named Willips Brighton and Cross just changed the last name a bit, you can find that here - kzread.info/dash/bejne/lmGdqtuhk9adeag.html 4, Loren Bouchard and H. Jon Benjamin have been working partners all the way back to Dr Katz Professional Therapist on Comedy Central, check it out sometime, that’s where they started with the squiggle vision that was used in the first season of home movies and the retro scripting method they’ve applied to every project they have done together. Cool video, it was nice feeling nostalgic for a bit, I used to record every Sunday, I had 2 milk crates full of everything that was aired between 01-06 until they got lost by the airline company in a move. Had that original night of premieres on one of them

It was when Unicorn Warriors Eternal and Royal Crackers were coming out, and I managed to catch the entirety of both shows multiple times over in broadcast. At first, I didn't find Royal Crackers very engaging since the art style gave off very generic vibes, but after seeing everything the show was doing with said art style and the wacky lore and plots they did I was really hooked.

The Hellbenders shorts are funny, but looking back if [as] did reject it I can't blame them. There was not really enough going on in those shorts to stretch it out to a full show. You had cartoons of the creators who were funni random guyz, and they lived in a house, and that was about it. You can have loose 'random event of the week as the characters hang out' shows, like Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Beavis and Butthead, or Eddsworld. But Chris and Zach had basically no defining characteristics (Zach was maybe a bit more sentimental, where Chris was more blunt, but a lot of their lines were interchangeable), they just lived in a generic cartoon city, and all of the other people around were nothing extras. The main thing the pitch had going for it was it was made by some popular internet funnyguys. Chris and Zach were doing the best they could with it, but I think letting it die so something like Smiling Friends could be made was the best thing that could of happened.

WELCOME TO ELTINGVILLE MENTION RAGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH 🔥🔥🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🦅🦅🦅 fr though, I cannot explain how much i adore it. It's originally based on a series of comics by Evan Dorkin, and it's an absolutely amazing portrayal of toxic fandom and nerd elitism mentality. The comics were genuinely so ahead of their time, and they kind of predicted "obsessive" fan behaviour and fandom convention culture back before either of those things even really happened in large scales like today. The comics r a bit hard to find but they're such a fun read, Dorkin was really ahead of his time. The man predicted redditors

I loved Welcome to Eltingville, watched it when it first aired. Last month I read the comic, and the pilot doesn't get across how unlikable the characters are supposed to be. The pilot they seem pretty much likable, but in the comic they're very openly misogynistic, hateful to non-fans and fans who aren't exactly as into things as they are, each other for any minor disagreements. They constantly talk about shoplifting, two of them are arsonists, and they talk way more about sex. The scene in the pilot of Bill on as the captain of the Enterprise with a crew of all women? In the comic one is blowing him, and his dialog implies they all have to, one after another. It's a really stark difference from the fun geeky Big Bang Theory-esque show the pilot seems like.

I kinda thought pibby wouldn't work as a full on show( BUT I WANTED IT TO), like I love the idea of learning wit pibby, I think it would work as a movie. I don't think it would work as an adult swim show cause of ( well the reason the creator and some youtubers say) it would be a total nightmare of legal ownership and it would be expensive to constantly do. I think it works for that one okay ko special cause it was a special( which i dont think theyve shown again) and I think it works for rick and morty cause they aren't going to multiple actual legal places, it's going to like legally safe knockoffs land. I mean they have characters based off the avengers and namor the sub mariner, but they aren't namor and the avengers.

What is that song you use in your videos that sounds like the opening to "Mr. Douchebag"? Did YFM sample that song, or the other way around?

Being anti social doesn’t mean having poor social skills. Anti social behavior is doing things that are considered to be outside the social norm. Like having sex for money, doing drugs, committing crimes, being violent or aggressive. What you described is just an anxiety disorder.

Dude...found ur channel about... Ohhh...about, now. I just now found it. Already subscribed n liked. Kickass video. Well done sir...oh. 1 last thing. Matt Berry is 1 of the funniest fuckin ppl on the planet. I caught him on some of the shows ur talking about 1st. But...ive burned a good number of brain cells up since then. So the IT Crowd was my introduction to that hilarious Brit bastard. Don't get me wrong. That show was funny out the gate. And Chris Morris (I think thats right...dude who played Mr Renyholm(??)...can't remember how it's spelled) was so fuckin funny too. That whole cast was insanely funny. I mean down to the extras or 1 episode guest. Everyone was funny. On purpose or not. Moss n Roy Jen goth dude who had to live in the...ummm...Richmond, right? Fuckin killed it every show. But when Berry got in the cast...I mean he is literally so good it put that show on another level. His 1st scene ever...at his dads funeral..!!? Dude...I laugh pretty hard just recall ing the memory. And idgaf what anyone says. WWDITShadows, hands down the funniest most original (for what its based on NOT being so original these days), best cast...its very well rounded. But Matt Berry is a fuckin comedic genius. Now...I do understand u spent maybe 2 minutes, if that, and then much much much more video on awesome topics that have noting to do with what I'm on about. And to I say...good pointe. Im glad u broght that up. My response...marijuana. U rule dude...laters
