    CAROLINA PATRIOT Even that might mot technically be the case. The best is probably the smallest round you can get reliable hollow point expansion from, as no handgun round can defeat the elasticity of human flesh. All you’re doing is poking holes. So penetration and shot placement are pretty much all that matter irl. That’s why the difference between the number rounds fired in successful instances of self-defense tend to be very similar, regardless of caliber. Difference is, you *will* be able to shoot a smaller caliber better. So I would say the best handgun caliber is the smallest you can get good hp expansion and penetration from. That means .32 ACP, .327 magnum, and the like.

    First thing, TheYankeeMarshal is doing great work, and keeps it entertaining. Every one of these calibers has it own uses, benefits and drawbacks. And yes, the presenter does joke around a bit. But there is a subtext here that most seem to have missed: The Most Bestest caliber is the one you can shoot well. If you can put 8 rounds from a .22 in a 5 inch group across your bedroom, then who can say that is not 'enough gun'? [After 8 shots, can still hear, can still see] But if your Model 29 misses on the first shot, how long for the follow up? [deaf and possibly blinded by flash] My rambling point is this: Do not depend on the destructive power of your gun, when the real weapon is your intention to prevail.

  • @BucketWheat

    This makes more sense than Mr. Threat Dynamics condescending comments... There is never a "Perfect" round nor firearm for EVERY situation -- which is why the FBI and our MIlitary Branches are constantly testing and re-evaluating their 'carry options' -- and each of these, as YankeeMarshal said, has "best application" in different situations. If I am defending myself in a mugging..do I want Expansion or Penetration..? Expansion! I don't want penetration that will carry the round into innocent people, buildings, and vehicles behind the assailant! If I am camping out, and a bear or wild boar -- or some of the bores in these comments -- shows up then I want penetration of their thick skin, and thick skulls! If someone breaks into my home, I don't want to also shoot my Neighbor when I fire off 3 rounds of a .50 cal Desert Eagle! Nor 'kill' the engine in my car out in the garage! SURE, a "social media" site of any kind is going to get some twinkies and snowflakes and people who have never pulled a trigger except for a video game...but like anywhere else on the 'net, we have to learn to overlook stupidity and converse with those who are intelligent and actually experienced in the subject matter...

    In my price range, my options are a 10 mm Hi-Point, any mid-price 9mm, or a KelTec .22 Magnum. I may go for a Stoeger ST-9 with some low grain, high velocity, high impact ammo. Not looking to plink 10K rounds at the range, just for reliable stopping power for any uninvited 4 am. visitors larger than the raccoons who steal the cat food off my stoop.

    I think a lot of the problem is that most .40s are built on frames that were designed for the 9mm. It is like shooting 357 out of a k-frame, only the difference is even greater because the poly frames are lighter to begin with.

  • @BTCforlife

    @BTCforlife

    Adrian P I was comparing the .40 to .357 because it is another round that was put into frames that were originally designed for a lighter load and had similar issues. Like the difference in firing magnums through a model 19 compared to a 686. I own more than handgun with a polymer frame and I don't have any complaints as far as that is concerned.

    Hi Damnan', I hope you recover quickly. I wasn't going to comment on the video, but since you're new to the world of guns, some thoughts that you may or may not find helpful. First, most gun people are "foamers", and everyone has an opinion that in their opinion is right. Next, I had a friend that was a patrol deputy who fired 36 rounds (two clips) of 9mm before the drugged-up cop-killer finally dropped. He dumped the 9 and went to a .45. I like the .40 S&W, so great choice. The power to mass ratio stats are excellent. I've had zero trouble maintaining tight groups in rapid/ combat stress firing. The bottom line is though, regardless of weapon or most calibers, as long as the gun fires, and you hit your target when under severe stress, you should be able to survive. I understand a .44 mag is good for grizzly. Finally, as you search youtube videos, and other sources, look for the ones who are super qualified, ex-cops, Special Operations, and so forth. "Hickock45" knows quite a bit, "Vickers Tactical" is US Army SF, "Funker Tactical/ Instructor Zero" is good to list some names. Take some NRA courses. As a former Army Medic with 2 combat tours, and as an ex-cop, that's my unsolicited advice, but ~Qualified~ Opinion. Welcome to the Second Amendment!

    The 357 sig is a great round. I have 3 Glocks in that caliber (Models 33, 31, and 24 6 in barrel). The ballistics for the Speer Gold Dot are outstanding (506 ft lbs 1350 fps) with great penetration and expansion. Using a DPM recoil reduction system, it is pleasant to shoot, even in the baby Glock 33. Ammo is easily obtained on the net or at gun shows. It is an accurate, flat shooting gun. Finally, there is no P needed, although Buffalo Bore has a potent round in 125 grain (564 ft lbs 1425 fps).

If Glock made a .32, and if the cost of ammo came down to the equivalent of 9mm, I think a 12-18 round .32 in a small frame automatic would make a great choice for some people. Here's a practical question: One argument I hear for certain calibers (like .357 Magnum) is that you can load a powerful, capable round for self defense while shooting a cheaper cartridge at the range, is that adequate? If you train with a cheaper cartridge while carrying a more powerful/expensive cartridge, does that practice carry over? Or do you need to "train like you fight and fight like you train"?

  • @jackuzi8252

    I had that very same concern. So one day I brought to the range a box of .357 in addition to the .38 I practiced with. I fired a cylinder of .38, then .357, then .38, then .357, carefully noticing how the gun felt in my hand, and how it shot. I concluded the difference wasn't big enough to worry about in a self-defense situation...training with .38 is fine. I then fired the remaining 40 rounds of .357 I had. I did notice that my hands were sore the next day from the abuse of firing 50 .357 shots from my little 2" snubnose. In the end, I decided that practicing with .357 is not only expensive, but unnecessary and unnecessarily hard on your hands. That's my take, anyway.

    There is one important factor in handgun caliber choices that is rarely discussed. That factor is cartridge pressure and resulting hearing damage of cartridges fired indoors in a home defense situation. Audiologists report that high pressure cartridges fired in an average size room will probably cause permanent hearing loss. Those common home defense cartridges that are HIGH pressure are as follows: .44 mag, .41 mag, 10 mm, .40 S&W, .357 mag, .357 sig, .38 super, 9mm, and .327 Fed mag. I will also throw in high pressure .223 and 7.62 x 39 rifle cartridges that are commonly used for home defense. Cartridges that are LOWER pressure and likely to not cause permanent hearing loss are as follows: .45 Long Colt, .45 ACP, .44 spl., .38 spl., 380 ACP, .32 ACP, .25 ACP, .22 lr. and all shotgun gauges. Something to think about. Therefore, my home defense guns are Winchester 1300 12 gauge, Kimber Custom II .45, and S&W Models 10 and 14.

    For me the most versatile round is .357 magnum especially if you reload, you can load them mild to wild, shoot them in a hand gun or in a rifle they are very potent. 9mm is the best all around caliber for semi -auto's very cheap to plink with and +P ammo can be as powerful as a .357 sig.

    10mm hands down. Only problem with 10mm, provided you can handle the recoil, is the lack of guns chambered in it. A good 10mm gives you twice the muzzle energy as a .45ACP. Magnum power in an automatic is a beautiful thing.

    QBCoach12 Yeah, I really like the Delta, and the way it shoots, it's very accurate. In fact, it was always my favorite gun for bowling pin matches. However, the Delta is built on a 1911 frame, and that was designed to handle 45 ACP pressures, NOT 10mm. As such, shooting full-power loads in a Delta could lead to a cracked frame. So, I shoot "FBI 10" (180's at 800FPS) in my Delta, and save the Elmer Keith Magnum Memorial Loads (180's at 1300FPS) for the G20

  • @MrEvanfriend

    @MrEvanfriend

    ***** That's really the only problem with 10mm. So few guns, and not all can even handle the full power loads. Other companies besides Glock really need to start designing some guns around the 10mm cartidge, it really is a pity that such a great round isn't being used to its full potential.

    I conceal carry an FNX 45 Tactical with Trigicon RMR every day without ANY problems. It's for a variety of reasons. 1) I have arthritis, and a "full size" gun is easy for me to hold and shoot. 2) It's built from the ground up to be fully ambidextrous, and with arthritis you never know when you'll have to use your off hand (and, Yes... I train with my off hand about as much as I do with my dominant hand). 3) It carries a 15 round magazine! Yep... That's 15+1 of 45 ACP! 4) It comes with a 5.3" threaded barrel, so putting a suppressor on it is easy. I will be getting one for really ONE primary reason. I don't want to damage my hearing, if I have to use the weapon if someone breaks into my apartment. I searched "forever" for a 9 mm that would provide ALL these features, without ANY success. Changing a gun to add these features after purchase, even IF POSSIBLE, would cost more than I paid for the 45 Tactical to begin with.

Got a Glock 32 first and feel in love with it. It's a fast round so you have the capacity, you range from the speed, and then the punch power. Loved it so much got a G33 for my conceal carry. If I'm carrying a revolver then no question, the .357 magnum is king. Versatile and powerful. With drop anyone and almost anything. Great review and spot on.

    A hunter that got into handguns late, I chose 357M in a S&W 28. My choice was based primarily on outdated anecdotal information and found 357M loads available barely exceeded 40 Auto and 10mm. Premium Buffbore stuff is now loaded to the 800 fpe level but it's expensive. They are no problem in a Model 27 or 28 but supposedly not best for regular use in lighter revolvers. SAAMI decided to download this caliber because lighter revolvers were supposedly adversely affected. What a shame to take one of the few good hunting cartridges and turn it into just another self defense caliber while at the same time promoting new calibers to fill that same niche (40 S&W). And SAAMI seems to think old 1911s and Lugers are getting stronger with age as these rounds are being loaded ever hotter over time by the big 3 US ammo makers (Rem, Win, Fed).

    If you like the 357 Magnum so much, I would think the 10MM would be your favorite semi-auto round. It has as much power as the 357 Magnum (not talking about FBI loads) and like in my Glock 20C, it can hold an amazing 15+1. Now of course price and availability are issues, but I have really become a 10MM supporter. I think underwood makes some incredible ammo in 10MM. Thanks!

  • @MikeMalkowski

    @MikeMalkowski

    But it's expensive, and the recoil is pretty stiff. The recoil is what brought about the .40 S&W remember. I think he's right with the .357 sig, it's to the 9mm what the 10 mm is to the 40. Same bullet diameter with better performance, and like he said, less recoil etc that hold the 40 caliber rounds back but it hasn't been widely enough adopted to make sense... That being said, the 10 is a great round, tons of power, pushing 357 numbers out of an auto, but availability, price, guns manufactured for it, recoil etc, all drawbacks.

    Too many people get carried away with caliber size when they really should be paying attention to how well they control the recoil for follow-up. I prefer 9mm JHP myself although I've shot plenty of .45. In a 1911 it's well-balanced so the muzzle doesn't fly everywhere but on a polymer gun the muzzle seems to bounce around a lot more. .40 caliber is a nice compromise between 9mm and .45 but the firearm tends to be larger for CCW. Trauma surgeons say that a .22 is deadly because it bounces around like a pinball rather than having a straight path of travel. Don't let others give you all of that macho shit; shoot what you're comfortable with for follow-up shots and remember it's not 00 Buckshot out of a twelve gauge, one stop shots aren't always a given.

    In the past i would have said .380acp for carry, .45 for bedside, but small 9s exist without any real drawbacks, even recoil, and it a much more tested and proven man stopper. Still adore 45, but 357 sig where i live is nearly the same price and certainly hard to ignore the added capacity and reduced heft. Now ideally I'd say 9mm and 357 sig for carry and bedside respectively, but in reality 9mm makes more economic sense and super hot Underwood +p+ ammo is still cheaper than factory 45 fmj where i live, so now 9 is all i shoot.

    Don't forget about the .44 special. It's a devastating round with a 180 grain hollow point. Very little recoil with lots of power. I really enjoyed your video! it was entertaining and informative. keep up the good vids!

    the 10mm beats every caliber there except the 44 mag. You need to stop selling the 10mm so short.

    Agree! This caliber is so versatile and when ordering from underwood, very affordable. This caliber deserves so much more respect.

    The 10mm if you go under wood can come damn close to competing with a 44

    10MM is a tad under powered over the 357 MAg

    John Mcbrier John, if you run the 10 wide open and the 44 also wide open they are not even close. I have both and have hand loaded each for years. The 10 is much closer to a 357 when both loaded to spec. Don’t know where you got the misinformation but maybe try doing your research before posting misleading info.

    Solid video, thanks. And the goddamn funniest comment was the caliber reqd to drop Rosie; I couldn't stop laughing because it took me by surprise.
