The most amazing stream you'll ever see - loaded with massive fish! p23

In the late summer of 2022, I lived off the grid for 9 weeks exploring and fly fishing some of the west's most remote streams. I recorded every day and started sharing my 9-week truck bed camping road trip after I returned home in mid-October. In part 23, I'm stunned by how incredibly beautiful this Montana stream is and how massive some of the fish are...some huge bull trout and big cutthroat call this stream home.
I started my 9 week road trip on July 31, 2022, and spent roughly 3 weeks in WY, ID and MT. Check out all the videos from this trip in the playlist linked below:

Drew, did a week long fly fishing trip to Montana over summer 2022 and happened to notice I camped in the absolute exact same spot at minute 10:14 in early September, I parked my truck in the same area under the trees and all! Same bull trout experience except he swallowed my cutt whole. The bull somehow didn’t break me off but I had to unfortunately snip the line as he already swallowed the cutt with my fly still in its mouth. He put up 0 fight probably because he couldn’t move after swallowing a 12-13” fish. Craziest fishing moment in my life and for sure the biggest bull let alone fish I had ever seen, had to be 40”. Crazy coincidence, one of the most beautiful places I’ve fished to date, glad you got to experience it!

When I got back home, The ticker at the bottom of the news screen confirmed when my paranoid mind suspected. A Belgian tourist was attacked by a grizzly in the park near the location where we saw the activity. He was evacuated by helicopter. Not sure what happened to him. I had a more personal incident on the Stillwater River in Montana, but was not attacked.

Drew, I think you need a buddy to fish with. That scene at 2:30 when you were hiking reminds me of a story and I am sure there have been many of us who have been there. It is always good to have someone with you or hopefully you carry a radio. I met an old guy fishing once and we started talking and when I was just about to leave, he asked do you want to fish with me, I know all the good holes. Of course I was not going to say no. By the end of the day, with great fishing of course, he finally admitted to me that his wife told him to never fish alone again. He had gone off and went fishing and was not found for several day after breaking his leg. So now when he goes, he always has a fishing partner. It was a fantastic day and a friend in my book forever. There is a morel of story in here somewhere. Great Vid but give me a shout when your in Idaho again...

While most weren’t friendly and warm, one group of two was awesome. Even handed me a few of their home tied dry ants…it’s all I fished that day and it made it super special. Big fat west slopes rising to ants. Way up stream, there were a couple deeper holes where I had to be patient as I watched them come up form 10-12’ down to casually sip my ant. Pretty epic. I do, that's my typical nymph rig for Arkansas and anytime not summer. Summer out west is dry or hopper time...I go to take advantage of fish that are willing to eat off the surface when bugs are hatching or terrestrials are present. I add a dropper for those that aren't aggressive. It's a short season...the other 10 months are double nymph rig time. This is how I fish most of the year...this was filmed winter 2022...kzread.info/dash/bejne/hWtmlKR-cdO6ftI.html

I guess you learn to deal with it, but trying to fish while looking over my shoulder for griz seems to me akin to keeping a lookout for the property owner on private land. I did the latter once, and it ruined the whole experience for me. It wasn't worth the worry.

Given that you were fishing in Montana, the limited range of bull trout, the season, and the massive kype.....I don't think the bull trout was looking to eat the cutthroat you had on your line....more likely it was staging to spawn and becoming very territorial.
