The morning after Derby stunner, Rich Strike and team still basking in the glow

They can't tell you it was just a dream if you never fall asleep. The sun rose brightly on Barn No. 17 at Churchill Downs Sunday morning, but it never set on the stunning Kentucky Derby victory of the evening before for 80-1 long shot Rich Strike, his trainer Eric Reed, or the team behind him.
"I haven't slept yet," Reed said Sunday. "I thought I would, but I couldn’t. But it's sinking in now. I'm so proud of this horse and all my guys. My jockey (Sonny Leon). It was a team effort from a long time ago. We were just trying to get here. It just went a step further than we ever could've dreamed. I don't know what to say other than it's an absolute miracle."

Great win Rich Strike! A grounded, humble team with this horse, salt-of-the-earth Kentuckians who have paid their dues every day at small tracks, a fearless jockey, and a horse that is smart, fiercely competitive, and can run all day--and did.

What I love about this horse and this race, is that 99% of the people did not pick this 80 to 1 long shot, most people did not win money on Rich Strike, people lost money betting on other horses, yet we will ALL say, we love that Rich Strike won this race, and this was the greatest race we ever saw. That alone is a beautiful thing. Yet, once we learn all the facts of a truly epic great story, does not matter how invested we were initially, we fall in love with the horse, his owner, the jockey, the whole team, and the story of literally over coming ALL the odds stacked against them. The owner had a tragic barn fire 2 yrs ago, Rich Strike was purchased for $30,000, originally Rich Strike was not even supposed to be in the race, he was a last-minute fill-in for a scratched horse. Rich Strike was a 80 to 1 long shot, which made this one of the biggest upsets in Derby history. In the first few seconds of the race Rich Strike was dead last, at one point in the race it did not look like Rich Strike was going to be able to make it through the huge pack ahead of him. Against all odds, literally all odds, this horse ran down the entire field and won the Kentucky Derby. That will give a lot of people hope for themselves and others, for what we are going through in life. So even though millions of people did not win a dime on Rich Strike, we still love the fact that Rich Strike and the entire team won. This literally was the greatest horse race ever. God what you did for Rich Strike and his whole team, please do for America.

Intelligence, guts, heart, confidence. This horse and jockey are tough as hell. The horse is the most loved and charismatic "athlete" in the world. Navigating straight through the middle of the crowded group after the final turn was a one-in-a-million feat. This jockey and horse willed themselves to victory, second place was not an option. The trainers were excellent. Rich Strike was the only horse to have gas still in his tank for the final 100 yards. The only thing we did know about him before the race, was that he was one hell of a closer. When the team saw him get to the middle of the pack towards the end, they had to be thinking that he had a chance to win.

  • @deawallach3404

Lol!! Absolutely not! Fillies AKA female horses, tend to run in races only for fillies. Occasionally for a grade one race like the derby you'll see one or two fillies in it but generally speaking only Colts run in the derby. 100 years ago far more fillies race against the Colts than now. If you see a race and it has the term Distaff or Oaks in the name, then that means it's only for fillies or mares to run in.
