IMPORTANT: This album must be heard as a whole, preferably in the newly found and remastered original 1967 mix. (Even better on DVD audio.) You will hear the full versions of each song and get the full impact of the actual orchestra they recorded the album with. It's an incredible album and one of the very first true rock concept albums.

This is the single version. The album version is way more massive with the full orchestra and the outro that ends the concept album, "Days Of Future Passed" The record goes through a single day in a persons life. It has some incredible moments and themes that tie it all together. It is one of what I consider the four great influential rock albums of 1967 - - The Piper at the Gates of Dawn by Pink Floyd, Sgt. Peppers' Lonely Hearts Club Band, Pet Sounds, and this - all in 1967. Quite a year!

The Moody Blues were the first true "album rock" band. All of their albums were intended to be listened to a full side at a time. Instead of long complex songs with different time shifts and melodies, they chose to record the songs gaplessly. Their first album was a R & B album with slightly different personal and is pretty good for what it is, but their next 7 albums are all phenomenal proto-progressivie-classical (lost of mellotron strings and orchestral arrangements. Check out the song "Gypsy," "Legend of a Mind," "Question."

While the Beatles were the first [I believe] to use a mellotron (in Strawberry Fields), Pinder was heavily involved in its promotion and in training other musicians in using it. The Mellotron was the definitive sound of the Moodys through through Seventh Sojourn. Then Pinder left and a synth was introduced.

Moody Blues (English band) were big in the late 60s and70s; another rabbit hole to explore. The first time I heard this song back in the 60s it blew my mind; there was nothing like it then or since; it was so beautiful and the vocals so moving and ethereal. This song and the album it appeared on are masterpieces! Since you liked this song then you'll probably like the rest of the album which has the same symphonic orchestration. This is a concept album with the lyrics telling a beautiful story of a someone's day from morning to the night. You heard the last song of the album, the night.

It harkens back to medieval Gothic nuances as a negative response to the industrial revolution. Many music critics consider classic rock as heavily steeped in Romanticism feel. That's very misleading. They fizzled out in the early-mid '70s, and then made a comeback attempt in the early '80s that was criticized for sounding like a ripoff of ELO's sound from that era. After that, they never returned to relevance. Great band during their '67-'73 purple patch, though.

@@Cosmo-Kramer that is an opinion not well founded. I saw them 6 times 1979 and after. They played new and old songs for large crowds. They were an amazing live band who half those concerts had an orchestra playing with them. I have never heard the ELO comment. I have seen ELO in concert as well and no I can’t see what you are saying. The ELO sound is one of a kind. You are not making sense. I liked their first 7 albums best, but they have always played quality music. They were not as commercially successful perhaps, but I have heard bands whose sound were not interesting to, me but extremely successful. They still have an enthusiastic following to this day. You must've been a troglodyte when, "Gemini Dream", came out because it was widely lambasted as a transparent attempt to capitalize on the ELO sound of that era (ELO has more than one sound). But you actually made my point when you conceded that The Moody Blues were no longer commercially successful after their '67-'73 purple patch -- barring that brief, but pilloried, comeback attempt featuring, "Gemini Dream". This discussion is not about what you personally find to be interesting music. It's about the band's relevance on the music scene through the years, mostly determined by the commercial success, or lack of success, of new records being released. Not nostalgia tours playing their old classics mixed in with a few new songs only the most ardent fans (like you) ever heard of and cared to listen to. I stand by my reply that your original statement is very misleading.

@@Cosmo-Kramerwhy the vendetta against the Moody Blues? You can always find someone to say whatever you want to hear. There is a lot of passed off as music that sells well. Some may think it is good, but others don’t. Selling well is one indicator, but music is art and art is in the eye or the ear of the beholder. It doesn’t make you look smart. It makes you look bitter and small.

@@williampearson9679 No vendetta. I already said how great they were during their halcyon days. Stop acting like a hurt fanboy. I'm just stating the facts regarding their varying relevance on the music scene throughout the years to give a clear picture to our hosts, while you're all butt-hurt that you've been criticized for not providing them with the same objective breakdown of the band's "relevance" timeline. I have nothing else to say on this matter to you, because your bias has clouded your perspective. I'll give you the last word. Go.

Released in November 1967 the single "Nights in White Satin" became a top ten US hit in 1972. Talk about ahead of its time!

one of the slow songs that at teenage parties, if you asked a girl to dance with you and she said yes.. you hugged her tightly and the result was very good.. ❤❤😂😂😂😂this is more important for the history of the song than the musical analysis..if you are rock..

This version of Nights in White Satin is missing the poem called Late Lament, at the end. It is not complete without it. That is the way it was played on the radio back in the day. In concert they had been doing the poem at the beginning then the rest of it at the end of the concert. A deep rabbit hole of greats.

This was my mothers favorite song though it always made her cry. I never asked her why and she never said. Until her passing I couldn't understand enjoyable tears. This is just one of those songs.

When you were kids, did you ever just hear songs and think that was just what music was? That was me with many songs, this one included. I listen to it now and hear a masterpiece. How lucky I was that this was "just music" to me growing up, this and Riders on the Storm.....

That's the first time I have heard this song compared to a western😮 I saw Moody Blues live with our local orchestra backing up & it was the best concert I've been to. Perfect weather, outdoor venue & they sounded so close to the recordings.

This was one of the very few bands I missed seeing in the day. Later on, I was able to see them in the late 80s, early 90s. I wept through the first 3 songs because they were so good live and I was so grateful I finally got to see them.

Members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, one of the unique things about this version of the band is that all five members wrote the songs and four of them traded lead vocals.

The Moody Blues were a huge British group. That is an orchestra playing with them. I think of them as a bridge between psychedelic & prog rock. Tuesday Afternoon, Ride My See Saw, Question Of Balance, The Story In Your Eyes are some of their great songs

There is a live version recorded in the 2000s with a full orchestra. I love your reactions, but I'd love to see you do more live video reactions to these songs. I know you've done some, but there is so much more. Like I said I do love your reactions.
