The writer and lead vocalist for this particular song is Justin Hayward, who still performs currently at 76 years old. It's astonishing to realize just how talented he was as a young man, having been only 19 when he wrote this.
I love this song. It was perfect for me as an angst-ridden teenager. I would call that chorus 'soaring.' There's something heavenly about it. The lyrics are deep.

This song was several years ahead of its time... in the USA. Originally released in 1967, the single bombed on the Billboard Hot 100. When re-released in 1972, it went all the way to #2 on the Hot 100 and stayed there for 2 weeks.

Our prom song and theme in 1969! We knew!
I dig the contribution by the London Festival Orchestra in their music. The Moody Blues' composition of work is deep. So many exceptional songs. I kindly recommend "Ride My See-Saw."
Great reaction guys. You should check out the live video with full orchestra! A truly amazing performance. ✌️❤️🔥
This is the single version. The album version is way more massive with the full orchestra and the outro that ends the concept album, "Days Of Future Passed" The record goes through a single day in a persons life. It has some incredible moments and themes that tie it all together. It is one of what I consider the four great influential rock albums of 1967 - - The Piper at the Gates of Dawn by Pink Floyd, Sgt. Peppers' Lonely Hearts Club Band, Pet Sounds, and this - all in 1967. Quite a year!
The Moody Blues were the first true "album rock" band. All of their albums were intended to be listened to a full side at a time. Instead of long complex songs with different time shifts and melodies, they chose to record the songs gaplessly. Their first album was a R & B album with slightly different personal and is pretty good for what it is, but their next 7 albums are all phenomenal proto-progressivie-classical (lost of mellotron strings and orchestral arrangements. Check out the song "Gypsy," "Legend of a Mind," "Question."

@@JuniorFarquar Sgt. Pepper was less of a concept album than generally believed and certainly more of a psychedelic sound than a progressive sound. While the Beatles were the first [I believe] to use a mellotron (in Strawberry Fields), Pinder was heavily involved in its promotion and in training other musicians in using it. The Mellotron was the definitive sound of the Moodys through through Seventh Sojourn. Then Pinder left and a synth was introduced.

Great reaction - Tuesday Afternoon is another great song among many others from the Moody Blues.
I have no words because this song speaks for itself. Love, love, love...
Original lineup put out 7 very unique albums between 1967 and about 1972. bunch of hits..
Moody Blues (English band) were big in the late 60s and70s; another rabbit hole to explore. The first time I heard this song back in the 60s it blew my mind; there was nothing like it then or since; it was so beautiful and the vocals so moving and ethereal. This song and the album it appeared on are masterpieces! Since you liked this song then you'll probably like the rest of the album which has the same symphonic orchestration. This is a concept album with the lyrics telling a beautiful story of a someone's day from morning to the night. You heard the last song of the album, the night.

A phenomenal British prog rock band, part of the British Invasion, active from 1964-2018, with a reorganization break 1974-1977. Actually, this masterpiece has an almost Gothic feel to it, & the album version has a spoken portion at the end, which really brings that into perspective. One of my all-time fave songs. @@cdfdesantis699 Romanticism is an artistic and aesthetic movement/style that flourished during the Victorian era. It harkens back to medieval Gothic nuances as a negative response to the industrial revolution. Many music critics consider classic rock as heavily steeped in Romanticism feel. Especially bands like Zeppelin, Moody Blues, etc., with their Gothic, mystical, mysterious nuances. Look up Romanticism in Wikipedia. You'll see it then.
You should definitely watch the live version. Sublime.
Songs that changed your life. Moody Blues had a quite a few. No words...

Great review! The full long version of 'Nights In White Satin' on the studio album, they recite a short poem at the end of the song, you need to hear. Please go on to review the song "Twilight Time", although you really need to hear the full album played all the way through.
Love it my generation.....
Live version with the orchestra is awesome.
Oh, wow. This is one of the best of the best. Incredible.
The Moody Blues had a 20 year + career with hits in the the mid to late 60s, 70s and 80s. Early users of the Mellotron "sampler" their keyboardist Mike Ponder was friends with The Beatles, Stones, and Yes- and got them all to use this devoice. They were the grandfathers of progressive rock along with early Pink Floyd-you have to listen to entire albums
Classical music at it's best
I love the progression under the flute solo.
The first time anyone hears this, it feels like you're in a heavenly cathedral hearing something nobody human could have imagined. I always set down what I was doing and listened quietly when it popped on the FM stereo receiver. Just breathtaking.
Justin Hayward is an often overlooked vocalist, but he is an incredible talent.
One of the finest albums ever released. Much ahead of it's time. Took 4-5 years for this song to be a "hit" on AM radio. We just wern't ready for it in 1967.

No judgement please or go ahead I don’t care lol…dark and stormy night driving to the Oregon coast,3 of us, on acid, hopping the fence at Yaquina Bay Light house and sitting on the cliff overlooking a stormy sea with big waves, the night sky swirling and shifting changing colors from black to purple, beautiful moon and listening to this album…over and over lol…amazing night.

Happy labor day good choice moti blues are excellent tone
Ride My Seesaw is another great choice.
In 1972, this was THE slow-dance song at the Junior High School dances. This song holds a special place in the heart of those kids! Including me.
The group made it until 2017. They sold over 70 million records and were inducted to the rock and roll Hall of fame. Justin Hayward and John Lodge are still touring today. I have seen Justin, their main lead singer and gifted guitarist / songwriter, twice in concert. They are were an amazing band! I hope you react to more of their music. You might listen to Melancholy Man and Story in Your Eyes to get a hint of their musical versatility. You will enjoy, I am certain.

That's very misleading. They fizzled out in the early-mid '70s, and then made a comeback attempt in the early '80s that was criticized for sounding like a ripoff of ELO's sound from that era. After that, they never returned to relevance. Great band during their '67-'73 purple patch, though.
@williampearson9679

@@Cosmo-Kramer that is an opinion not well founded. I saw them 6 times 1979 and after. They played new and old songs for large crowds. They were an amazing live band who half those concerts had an orchestra playing with them. I have never heard the ELO comment. I have seen ELO in concert as well and no I can’t see what you are saying. The ELO sound is one of a kind. You are not making sense. I liked their first 7 albums best, but they have always played quality music. They were not as commercially successful perhaps, but I have heard bands whose sound were not interesting to, me but extremely successful. They still have an enthusiastic following to this day. Your criticism is not warranted, but you have a right to your negative opinion.

@@williampearson9679 It's not my opinion, it is fact. You must've been a troglodyte when, "Gemini Dream", came out because it was widely lambasted as a transparent attempt to capitalize on the ELO sound of that era (ELO has more than one sound). But you actually made my point when you conceded that The Moody Blues were no longer commercially successful after their '67-'73 purple patch -- barring that brief, but pilloried, comeback attempt featuring, "Gemini Dream". This discussion is not about what you personally find to be interesting music. It's about the band's relevance on the music scene through the years, mostly determined by the commercial success, or lack of success, of new records being released. Not nostalgia tours playing their old classics mixed in with a few new songs only the most ardent fans (like you) ever heard of and cared to listen to. I stand by my reply that your original statement is very misleading.

@@Cosmo-Kramerwhy the vendetta against the Moody Blues? You can always find someone to say whatever you want to hear. There is a lot of passed off as music that sells well. Some may think it is good, but others don’t. Selling well is one indicator, but music is art and art is in the eye or the ear of the beholder. It doesn’t make you look smart. It makes you look bitter and small.

one of the slow songs that at teenage parties, if you asked a girl to dance with you and she said yes.. you hugged her tightly and the result was very good.. ❤❤😂😂😂😂this is more important for the history of the song than the musical analysis..if you are rock..
This version of Nights in White Satin is missing the poem called Late Lament, at the end. It is not complete without it. That is the way it was played on the radio back in the day. In concert they had been doing the poem at the beginning then the rest of it at the end of the concert. A deep rabbit hole of greats.
This was my mothers favorite song though it always made her cry. I never asked her why and she never said. Until her passing I couldn't understand enjoyable tears. This is just one of those songs.
