I never realised it but the doll maker rides a train thru wonderland and in the end the real doctor gets pushed from alice onto a train track where he gets run over by a train. That is some good foreshadowing

I always thought the train represents her symbol of hope for ending her madness as she follows it through the game whenever she sees it. In a way it ended like this, but in another way for I didn't expect the Doll Maker being on the train. :D

Fun fact about the samurai wasps: They are a representation of Nans words to Alice about how men are like to a vulnerable child as a wasp is like to an ant.

Hey, you missed how the Slithering Ruins resembled leeches, which were probably used on Alice in her time in the Asylum for bloodletting. This also is an interesting allegory for Bumby bleeding Alice of her sanity through the Ruin's influence.

Also when Alice was walking through the train talking to the characters in wonderland, she used Lizzie's name instead of Queen's when addressing her in the train.

To make it easier change it slightly, let's say he was the one who took her doll she was looking for them stopped caring about and she goes "my rabbit!" Then turns to the red queen "what has that monster done?"

Especially since there has been occasions where in cases and interviews with abused children who can't speak due to trauma among other things, they'd use dolls as an explanation on what happened to them, namely through interviewing them on where they were touched by their abusers.

The Executioner is by far my favourite. He basically chases you for like the first third of the Queensland zone and then you watch with pure satisfaction as Alice literally just stomped him into nothingness

Actually, I think the Black substance leaking from the ruined and Dollmaker is actually Coal Tar. It burns Alice, hardens into a brittle substance when the enemies are killed and it's related to trains... and the story does take place in Industrial Revolution London.

Even though they weren't bosses in this game, I think a video about the rulers of the different domains would be an interesting one to do. I'm talking about the Mad Hatter, the Duchess, the Great Centipede, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, the Jabberwocky, and the Red Queen. The lore behind them and their designs are really interesting, especially the ones who reappeared and had huge changes in Madness returns.

You can find all of his concept stuff on his twitter @americanmcgee or just by googling "Alice Asylum." I don't know if the game has been fully confirmed yet, I think it's still in the getting funding/development stage, but things are looking very promising.

Yes, ew. If you take notice, he makes really unappropriate, unrespectful gestures at her such as "mooning" and showing middle finger, pinching and slapping her. Even the way he grabs these columns and pulls his tongue out while doing so was unlikely to be unintentional. It's a really disturbing, creepy yet somehow fascinating detail.

I would like to point out that The Executioner seems to be based on a Joker card; the clothes it wears contains all four suits, which is like how the Joker is the only card that doesn't belong to a suit, its mask is reminiscent of a jester hat, and Jokers are often depicted as jesters or other clown-like figures; and finally, the way Alice can't defeat it (until she grows big enough that is), could be a reference to how Jokers are wild card and often have special rules applied to them depending on what game you're playing

Me too. I've played these games for years. It kind of felt like a personal unique niche little thing I enjoyed. I could never figure out why I seemed to be the only one who loved these games... But knowing that any other peoples enjoy this series too, makes me happier because it totally deserves some love! Think of the work that went into these games! The artwork alone is gorgeous. It captures some gothic fantasy elements---that very whimsical nature---even the old original movie version couldn't quite capture. The animated version also seemed more dreamlike. However, in these games, they took that concept and dialed the gothic horror up to 11. It speaks to that Tim-Burton-Style my inner child ate up while watching his movies. (Then his version came out and... 🤢🤮😵)

A thought about the “ruins” - you have to destroy the faces/heads to render them useless, much like Bumby messed with Alice’s head to make her malleable. They’re made up of goop/junk which means they have limited mobility, much like how Alice is filled with so much trauma that she’s unable to move on from her past

It could be seen as smashing the fragile, hollow identity that holds them together and gives them purpose inside the crumbling Wonderland. Probably why the Dollgirls don't actually speak in game and at the very end the children wandering the street are just faceless shadows: because Bumby has stripped them of their identities in order to rebuild them as compliant toys for his clients. Toys don't have voices of their own. They don't have feelings or passions or any emotion of their own at all. Force a human into that state and you get a cold, stiff, blank visage staring back at you. Of course the Insidious Ruin in Queensland are the same model but textured to make it look like they're made out of meat so I suppose there's also an element of "they're made that way because that's what's conveniently available in the environment." And since I've already started I guess I'll just go ahead and talk about the Dollmaker's tongue. Black gooey thing with doll faces on it, right? It's both the source of Bumby's power over people and a vision of what he intends to do with the children under his care. Making the tongue a literal snake probably would have been a bit too unsubtle as to how Bumby is a silver-tongued fiend hiding a whole lot of rotten ugliness beneath a genteel exterior.

You mention that the Dollmaker's hands grow dolls face on them in his more grotesque form, but he actually has them when you first encounter him.

This is really good. Thanks for explaining! Tbh it was really satisfying seeing that grotesque mass of a human Dr Bumby get his comeuppance from Alice. Not only does she save herself, she saves and gets Justice for the countless young children who were victims of this horrible man. It’s always a hard to talk about but I felt that Alice Madness Returns did a good job of shedding light to these kinds of situations that we think are unbelievable but are very very real.

Indeed! And it's also amazing how after all she's been through, Alice doesn't only care about herself either. You see the Wonderland characters actually blaming her for the fact she was too carried away to notice and help kids she lived with - and we all know that it's actually her mind screaming at her at these moments. Maybe it's even more understandable though, she had been horribly traumatized at a young age, she actually KNOWS how awful this whole situation is.

She's still delusional, and probably still dangerous (hinted at by the story told by the policeman as he releases her from gaol). Its main effect is to save the children who won't now be future victims, the ones who don't even know what they've been saved from. That's where Bumby's death really makes a difference.

Some of these monsters would fit right in with the world of Little Nightmares.

the dollhouse has always been my favourite area. along with the overall aesthetic, i love psychological horror. the fact of the main enemies are symbolic of the child abuse that bunby put the real-world counterparts.

Here's some triva about the wasp & doll enemies in the game: the samurai wasps were originally going to be lead by the Wasp Empress and there was originally going to be a male counterpart to Doll Girl called Doll Boy. Both of these ideas were scrapped, however these two still appear in the Extra Content section and in The Art of Alice: Madness Returns.

This game is so freaking weird that just listening to your discription is surreal. It's somehow awesome and yet at the same time tragic. Your commentary is brilliant though, polite but succinct. Lovely job ❤️

I really love how the executioner gawks up at Alice and drops his scythe as if to say "I'm screwed".

I love it when the Executioner drops his weapon after Alice grows.

Some things you could have mentioned about the dollmaker. One hand is feminine, and the other is male. Also his attacks and gestures are sexual messages. Some believe that is the stuff his real life counterpart did to Lizzie, and wants to do to Alice

Now these are the types of videos that I would want to watch everyday!

One sad thing that I noticed, when you're fighting the doll girls and break down their clothes their cries actually sound more distressed then when you defeat/kill them :(

I think the saddest part of the game for me was that the executioner wasn't a beatable boss, but he honestly had one of the greatest enemy designs I've ever seen in a Alive and Wonderland story.

Something funny actually happened when my dad was playing this a couple years ago, a glitch happened and she basically had to kill all of the enemies in a room in order for a gate to open and the card executioner emerges from another doorway, but a glitch happens one of the enemies where it stood still didn't attack my dad and he couldn't kill it and when the card executioner appeared every time he died so he reloaded the level went through it and found out that it was in fact a glitch. And the lesson of this common kids is if one enemy is stuck in place and won't attack you you're f*****

The game world has always intrigued me, tools some serious creativity to come up with a lot of the stuff that’s depicted, twisted creativity even, I needed this explained because I take things at face value and need help going down the rabbit hole of deeper thinking 😉 Love the work, keep it up!

Maybe sometime in the future you can talk about in detail each of the individual characters from the Madness returns talking about how they became the way they are

It really is a good representation of real trauma. It never goes away, you constantly have to fight it in your own head and it often comes when you least expect it / don’t want it. Definitely an incredibly put together game.

Sort of unrelated but it's too bad you didn't mention the easter egg skeleton in the red queen's castle, that of Rasputin from the game Psychonauts. Obviously not a monster to fight so I understand why it's not included.

The Paper Ants may also be a reference to The Man in the Paper Suit from the Lookingglass Line.

This game is extremely underrated, not a lot of people know about it and those that do know about it are rare. Tho I do really wish there were bosses in the game

Bonus tip! After stunning the teapot once, put a bomb infront of it and the teapot will attempt to take a swipe at it once it gets back up, the explosion will immediately put the teapot back into stun state and you can finish it off.

Little bit of trivia about the DollMaker and the infernal train: his elongated tongue is supposed to represent oral sex, the pillars on the platform are supposed to represent Alice’s legs (that’s why he grabs them) and the platform itself is supposed to represent Alice’s virginity, because that’s one of the (many) things she’s trying to protect

This game was such ahead of its time it’s truly a hidden gem

The doll girls with eyes freaked me out like crazy. As someone whos disturbed by dolls I thought the ones without eyes are already super creepy, later the ones with eyes appeared and I almost turned off the game forever

It’s pretty old the first game is about 2 decades old now

It’s neat how the doll maker is a scrap of sanity in a world of madness being a psychiatrist. But sanity in a world of madness is terrifying

I try to take this game seriously, but then Alice’s hair clips straight into her face during an important cutscene, and I burst out laughing

I ended up getting to play this within the last year for the first time and it’s definitely one of the best. It’s so unique and I’d love another game like this

I'd love to see a video or two on the original Alice game! Especially since there's a potential for a third to come out this october

You know, learning more and more about the lore of the Alice games is getting me more and more excited for Alice Asylum. There is one thing I'm puzzled by though. Alice Asylum is supposed to be about Alice's time in the Asylum before the events of the first game, but the first WAS her time in the Asylum. So, is Alice Asylum really a prequel or a remake of the first game?

It's most likely just going to retcon the first game like Madness returns did. I don't like it, but a prequel is way more understandable of a recon than an unneeded sequel.

@@Everik-ct6pg Nice idea, but I don't understand how Madness Returns retconned the first game. It took the lore of the first game and expanded upon it. Sure, Alice's mind was in shambles again, but that was due to Bumby's corruption not returning PTSD.

@@tonysonic456 Bumby and Alice's sister didn't exist in the first game. The fire was caused by the cat accidentally tripping a lamp near the fireplace. Madness Returns inserted them into the first game's story in order to make a new one, therefore it's a retcon.

@@Everik-ct6pg Ah, I see. Funnily enough, Madness Returns paints it out to Alice mis-remembering certain details. Makes me wonder how Asylum is going to paint it out.

You should definitely check out Epic Mickey. It's a goldmine and deserves more recognition

This was such a good series and I can’t wait for the sequel. I hope they get professional bands to do the album like they did with the movie. They need to bring back shine down, all time low and victim effect.

i played this game so many times. this is hands down, my favorite game. i cant get enough it.

Honestly, I didn't expect to enjoy this game as much as I did. It was the perfect amount of grimdark that didn't really ruin the "aesthetic" of the original stories.

See, when I rewatch your episodes I notice the puns, but the first time around I never do. Because the way you say them so casually and so serious I just nod with them until it hits.

SHB's narrations intonation might never change, but all the informations he inquired is completely SPOT ON. Well done, bro. I also love this game. Watching this makes me want to play it all over again.

Just noticed something: when you talk to the Dollmaker in the Dollhouse, he has all his fingers. But when you fight him, he is missing his ring finger on the hand with the pink nails. And he also has a ring around this same finger. Does it mean he was married? And why is he missing it in the boss battle?
