As someone that expended thousands of hours of his life playing the main MH games this game amazed me back in the day, the way in how they managed to take all the intricacies of MH and perfectly translated them to a pokemon-like rpg was so genius. You talk about how the monster patterns can feel random because you have no way to anticipate them the first time and it can be difficult to remeber them the next time but thats MH basic stuff, the fisrt time you fight a monster it will totally screw you and the second and third time it will not be that different, but by the fourth time you are already feeling it and by the fifth time you are styling over the monster, that's why mh can be so addictive and it is an experience that this game managed to perfectly replicate over it's own context and rukes.

In addition, knowing the monsters ahead of time gives you a lot of insight over what their attack patterns may be. Nerscylla? Probably technique attacks, maybe some powerful hits. Nargacuga? Definitely speed. Feels good to have monster hunter knowledge recontextualizes.

@@voxelheartthe monster patterns are slightly more unpredictable compared to stories 2 but its still very fun, i started playing 2016 (what a time it has been!) and i know every pattern of every monster in the game, which makes me feel like an genius haha expect for Fatalis, his patterns are ENTIRELY random, but hey i guess its still fun, have you played the original?

The element change mechanic was single-handedly my favorite mechanic out of the first game, having a water Black Diablos was awesome and so customizable, and it’s probably a big reason I don’t like the second game nearly as much since I was really wanting to make a Water Gammoth before the game even launched

That was my favorite monster+element combo. My water Black Diablos was my main monster when I played through the original release. I also had an ice Rathian and thunder Brute Tigrex. This mechanic is pretty much my only gripe with MHS2… I had plans for either a dragon Mizutsune and/or a water Legiana before release. (By the way, changing Ratha’s element to dragon is worthwhile for seeing him w/ the changes in cutscenes alone.)

@@CTSael absolutely, Dragon Rathalos looks incredible, it’s even more frustrating since it was intentionally removed from the second game even though they had models for almost every monster with the correct element types. Because after the DLC dropped for MHS2, the thought that slept at the back of my mind was how cool the different elemental changes could have looked on all of the Elder Dragons and Deviants. man i remember playing this on my 3DS when it came out, never made it to the end of the game properly (although i did get to the final area) since i was just a kid at the time and couldn't understand the nuance of the enemy attack patterns, the thing bringing me back to this game easily has to be the ability to swap monster elemental alignment in the rite of channelling, something i sorely missed in the sequel. i remember my favorite monster was an ivory lagiacrus i tuned to the fire element, turning the blue tipped spikes red and i called it "bones", looking forward to recreating him in the remaster!

Played the game when it first came out as a Pokémon-obsessed kid and was super disappointed the dlc never came over from Japan. Happy to hear that it’s here, that reason alone is making me consider picking it up again. Now that I think about it, I picked up the sequel but didn’t get too far since I thought the pacing was slow. Maybe it’s time to give it another go

Ok great review. Just a few things I respectfully disagree on. 1. The sequel still had the egg design issue. Some monsters still had shared designs with very similar colors which made it hard to find them without a chart 2. The randomness in combat to me felt great. It meant you never truly learned a monster and you had to be more prepared.

  • @lucidragon5260

I agree, especially with your second point. With the combination of combos and randomness, it was really fun to weigh your options of finishing a combo and possibly losing the head to head or to just take the safe option. With stories 2 you knew you would lose the head to head because you knew for sure what the monsters were going to do.

This game combat isn't very good and doesn't feel weighty, people like to put Pokemon down but it's combat and the one of other jrpgs like the early final fantasy (2-10)are so much better and engaging because the combat of this game makes me feel like a viewer instead of a person that is participating in the fight. The Battles are Also way too random and feel like you are not in Control so i don't agree with you

@@isidorodaviddoro1920 I don’t agree with the Pokémon or FF as examples. FF’s random encounters makes it annoying at times and it really just boils down to farming like most jrpgs. Pokemon ‘s combat isn’t really spectacular either since lacks depth outside of dedicated formats. VGC sets rules that make it more interesting however I feel like we’re talking about mainline Pokémon without tournament rulesets so I’ll stay there. In my opinion monster hunter stories has more customization and more options in combat than pokemon . As for FF it depends. You can’t really customize your character outside of their abilities and that doesn’t sound appealing to me. This is entirely my thoughts and you are welcome to like those two more. I even found myself playing world of final fantasy and that has interesting combat. One thing to note is I do believe stories can have better combat and more ways to make the rider more involved like making the rider able to do as much damage as monsties

I'm kinda sad that Legend of Zelda DLC is absent, I used the Majora's Mask to cover Navirou's face and it was funny in some of the story cut scenes 🤣 One of the gripes was with the original 3DS game was the bingo system, so I didn't do much of powering up my Monsties which meant me beating the game with titular Rathalos that only had basic 3 spots open, no wonder I had some hard time in certain parts :D But still, I had the fondest times of playing the game on 3DS back in the day when the game came out. 135+ hours was spent during the glorious 3DS days, it's insane to see this coming so close to Nintendo Switch. Last month I even came back to finish the Wings of Ruin sequel so the timing couldn't be more perfect for this remaster version of the original game 🥰

Its a case of "Breath of fresh air to the franchise and an odd twist to it, but nothing new from its 3DS release" for me. My biggest gripe is with the Rite of Channeling as the farming for it is.... Its really bad... Like its almost not worth even doing in the first place other than just clearing out Monster space.... Since you can't really change the gene to any slot you want on the grid (which is what MHS2 did) the farming to craft your perfect monster is going to be horrible for you. If you got the gene but its in the wrong area? That's a reeeal shame because you have to go out and look for that monster and gene all over again

    10 күн бұрын

You have to really stack the elemental boosts to change a monstie’s element. If I remember correctly from playing it on the 3DS, the value is +5 to affect a non-elemental partner, which is much more easily achievable vs one with an already-ascribed element. You have to both stack the element you want + remove genes that boost its natural element. Once the value of the desired element is a higher number above the natural one, it will take effect. (Though a monster with an already existing element will naturally have a base value for their original element even without those genes that you must remove, so you have to really stack the overriding element for the change to even work.)

I'm actually happy that they didn't change the original enemy AI - it makes things interesting and actually give some threat, while in MHS2 it was simply boring. What I'm actually not happy about are the graphics - the colors look oversaturated and some graphics seem overly smoothed out (what's up with dens?). I'm also sad that they didn't allow for repositioning the genes (that was a major quality of life boost for mhs2!), and I'm sorry they didn't add quick fights when facing lower lvl monsters... Gonna miss that a lot when lvling my party! Still, the more challenging fights and the ability to change Monstie's element are somethings to be looking forward to! As well as actually compelling story and characters (mhs2 sucked in that regard😅).

And they managed o blend that quite well in both games, with riders forming remote civilisations that rarely interact with the outside world. The first game also tackled this aspect head on when you enter gildegaran and you are scrutinized for the outlandish behavior of walking with a monster in tow XDDD

Would you have a source on it being in the same universe that I could check out? I keep seeing this claim but I've never seen it stated authoritatively, and things like Rajang laying eggs seem like obvious discrepancies between this "version" of the MH world and the world the mainline games depict imo

@@Oceaniz Well, the part with fanged beast eggs n stuff like kinship moves is purely for gameplay reasons, I think it's just a mechanic, no one in the games actually acknowledges fanged beasts laying eggs in stories, and the only time you see a baby arzuros in a cutscene it's already born. That and I don't think it would've been appropriate to show your rider ripping a rajang's womb to get to the baby XDDD. And as for it being canon, it was specififed in an interview that all of the games are tailored so that they don't mix with each other much other than let's say locales in mainline games so that they don't retcon or override parts of the canon they establish. that's why they never answered the question whether rise is in the old or new world, riders being recluses, etc. And considering that many people support this claim, perhaps there was an actual response among the lines of yes its canon but no clue on that one.

@@Oceaniz Okay so regarding your question, Tsujimoto responds in interviews with MhST being a spin-off series that expands on the monster hunter world(not the game). He never separates it from the general world of monster hunter and the idea behind it wasn't "what if in another timeline" but rather "if some people hunt monsters, why not have people befriend them?". When asked why palamutes are born with clothes on them in st2, he answers that they wanted to show people less accustomed to the mh franchise that that is indeed a palamute and not a random dog. So basically this also confirms that many things that don't make sense were stretched for gameplay reasons. And the all monsties come from eggs is most likely for that rng aspect of monster dens. even if they made a baby fanged beast model that you snatched from it's mom, it would take away from that "i wonder what it is" vibe.

Got this on a whim, as an enjoyer of both TBRPGs and MonHun, the game is just too easy. Definitely a kids game.

This game came out 8 years ago? Nah, no way, I swear I was playing it like 3 years ago and Stories 2 came out like a year ago. This is the biggest gaslight in history.
