RVing changed my life in ways I never expected. I found my love for RVing in my late 30s when I discovered I thrived in a small space and regenerated my soul while camping alone. RVing taught me to challenge myself and take risks, something I'd never would have considered earlier in my life. I quit teaching and started my own business, and now, ten years later, I have my dream career, made friends across the U.S. and Canada, and have traveled thousands of miles with my husband and thousands more as a solo RVer. I loved your first podcast and am excited to hear more.

Scott Watson has many times said you were his inspiration for RV travel, as he was mine. I can see why now. This first podcast really highlights the passion and sincerity you have not only regarding the RV lifestyle, but with the ‘living life’ lifestyle. You are honest about the difficulties you encountered and enthusiastic about your lives together. The indelible mark you have left on so many in the community has created a positive impact throughout… can’t wait for episode 2!! Be seeing you!

During “Covid” 2021-2022 we were able to isolate and travel the country, all the places we went to were either closed or totally empty and unmanned. Summer of 2021 we went on a 90 day run to the “big 5” I’ll never be the same again. We own a 2020 Thor Sequence 20L van. ❤

Before the pandemic, there were some youtubers travelling the world doing travels through South America and had quite popular videos. When they had to return to the US due to the pandemic, the US Parks service changed the rules when recording videos in the national parks if the video recorders were youtubers living from paid promotions and youtube monetization.

I grew up in a family that didn't go camping at all. My mom experienced a road trip from Oregon to Wisconsin (to visit relatives) in the 1920's as a child, sleeping in barns and it just wasn't something that she wanted to repeat. My dad worked in the woods and then drove a log truck before becoming a barber prior to World War II, and spent the war in the South Pacific, and I'm not sure that he ever expressed a desire to go camping - if he did, the idea would have been rapidly shut down by my mom. We vacationed by spending time in motels in the 1950's and 60's. My first "camping" experience was in the 1990's, some friends wanted me to go camping with them, and I said that I would if I could rent an RV and we did it together. So, that trip was amazing!!! We picked out a route, spent several days on a lake in the high Cascades, then road tripped to the Columbia Gorge before heading home. I then ended up doing tent camping for a number of years, eventually buying a used trailer, selling it and buying another, and then selling that and buying into a partnership with three other couples in fractional ownership of a park model RV at a resort in Central Oregon. The current model of camping/RVing will probably change when we hit semi-retirement and then retirement, but we're not yet sure which way things will go. Right now, we're primarily focused on "doing as little as possible, as hard as possible."

After many RVs we stayed home during 2021 and built an RV from a box trailer and had ball at 76 years old. We love it and its the only one and love it. We named it the Tramper!

I found the section about finding a home base especially interesting. Being from Los Angeles, how did RV travel change any pre-conceived notions you had about other parts of the country and the people who live there? What about your home base specifically makes it a good jumping off point? Do you have hookups there, covered parking or a garage, is it centrally located in the U.S.? etc. Do you have any recommendations on percentage of income (or time for that matter) which should go towards your RV and travels vs. your home base? How do you lock down your home base while out on the road? House sitter? Just good locks and an alarm? All done with pets? Thanks!

  • @Weretherussos

    @Weretherussos

Great suggestions, thanks Ethan. We're planning to do an episode or series of building a barn for the RV. I really like the idea of a show talking about how our perspectives changed. Not sure I want to do something about how we lock down the home base because then people know what we do and I'm concerned that would leave us a bit venerable.

Been watching your videos for years. Love the idea of a podcast. I have listened to dozens of RV, camping, travel podcasts (1000s of episodes) since 2015 and 1000s of KZread videos. I really enjoy the “stories” of what brought RVers to the lifestyle. I enjoy more than campground reviews, how to clean your black tank, etc. I think you guys will do a great job with a podcast and will bring your introspective, reflective style to your podcast! I will add your podcast to my Apple library!!! GREAT first episode.

Happy new year! I'm currently reading your first book and love it so far. We bought our class B in October and only spent 2 week-ends to travel. We love the liberty that rv life style offers. During this winter, we plan to do so much road trips that we don't know if it will be possible to do it all as weekenders or holiday traveller's. For sure RV will change our life style, also your channel and adventure help in our decision to travel on the road! Thanks for your sharing! ps: I apologize for my english, I'm french canadian.

This was a great podcast - maybe even a bit more personal than your KZread videos which I have watched for a long time. I think I started watching when I found you by looking for information related to travelling with a dog (of which I am still very interested even though my dog now is a different one). It also made me feel you learnt some more things about each other which after a long relationship is also pretty fantastic! Lots of great information too which makes me look forward even more to the next one

My husband and I are retired school teachers (71 & 68 yo). We bought our very first camper van last month from Overland Van Project and have enjoyed three trips already in the first month of having our van. We’re happily planning our next trip. You see a friend that I have had for 40 years was murdered by a guy she just started dating yesterday. Life isn't just short. It's filled with moments we never take and memories that make us second guess ourselves.

Hi RV friends. This is the first time I’ve run across your KZread channel. I follow several KZread RV channels and this video was fun hearing the answers to each other’s questions. I look forward to watching more in the future. My wife and I have been camping since we were kids with our parents. Then after we married in the early 70’s we purchased a tow behind and family camped for many years with our family of 6 children. Now, we’ve been Airstreaming in a 27’ trailer since 2006, not full timers but getting out about 80 days per year. Our fellow Airstream Club members have become some of our most cherished friends. Happy New Year 🎉😊🎉

Thank you for your new podcast! I appreciate the insight into the moment you realized full time RVing was right for you. I purchase a class B 2 years ago. And have had some trips and weekends, longest was 3 weeks all solo. What I’m wondering about (and worried) is if and when my significant other will join me. It then becomes a cooperative travel time. I’m not sure that will work for either one of us. I need some reassurance!!!

My wife, two dogs, and I have had our Coachmen Beyond RV for two years! We just got back from a 6 day, 5 night trip around central Tennessee to see how the dogs would do on a longer trip. They did fabulous! We are confident that we could travel farther south in the winters. We live in Michigan and would like to get out of the cold in January and February when we can! Safe travels! We bought our Rv after 5 years of research 😂. Factory tours. Shows. Going to dealers to see different types. Once we got it ( video on my channel) we started to set it up. We had a travel trailer before so we had experience. We’ve gone to a few campgrounds, although that’s not my preference. We’ve boondocked a few times and I really enjoyed that. We’ve used Harvest Host/Boondockers welcome too and really enjoyed that. Stayed at some National forest campgrounds, dry camping. We’re going FT when I retire in 2 1/2 years and my biggest fear, besides running out of money each month 😂, is finding a spot to park each night. That keeps me nervous. I’m hoping I can get over that after we go. I’m hoping after watching all these videos on KZread I can use that information for finding places to sleep each night. 👍🏼

Congrats on the new podcast! I am curious as to your thoughts on renting a Class B for a month or so to test the waters if you aren't planning on going full time before say buying one given the expense or if buying one using it for say 4 months a year or so and renting it out the rest of the time covers the expenses given RV rental rates are so steep. I'm interested in that topic and you may have covered it but I don't recall seeing it talked about. Maybe a future topic! "creative ways to afford an RV you can't really afford" haha Thx!

Really excited to see the new video drop. Thanks for sharing your own personal stories. The lessons learned from “how has RVing changed your life” is very similar/applicable to how other high value goals with a life partner has changed your life. You could substitute kids, career, first home, small business. My key takeaway from your podcast is just how important communications and shared goals are to success. Clearly before the rest stop incident, you all were not totally on the same page. And the reason you’ve overcome and thrived is communications. Would like to see if you have other tips/tricks in this area. As for future topics… You all already have your own voice and following. But I’d ask you to take a look at the old STONation Podcast. I’d like to see more in depth and similar long form interviews with the builders and buyers or STO products. Would like to hear from the 2024 MODE design team to hear about what they changed and why? As well as what almost got changed and why not? Same sort of coverage for the HILT design team. I would also like to hear a bit about your corporate jobs and if you miss any of the creative aspects of your old careers? How did your old corporate jobs set you up for your KZread channel? And finally, when is Kait releasing her cookbook? 😂

Thanks for the suggestions. We're planning on having some other couples on to share their experiences because we're all so different in how we approach things. We'll absolutely be doing some stuff in Storyteller but also other brands out there and getting a nice cross section of the industry. I like the idea of the corporate jobs we'd just have to figure out how to add some meat to it because it'd be a quick, "we don't miss anything!" Oh and for the book...here you go: weretherussos.com/omnia-oven/

One thing would be interesting to hear is to have you interview Scott (Go Small, Live Large) and his partner, Kyle. Looks like they went in a totally different direction and got his (Travato) and his (Class B+ Regency) RVs. So instead of learning how to communicate to survive a small space, they just got their own separate spaces. You all have survived and learned how to communicate. Would like to hear more about how to learn to communicate without your “trial by fire” experience at the rest stop. And is there something where you learned how to communicate in the small RV space that hasn’t translated well in your new home base. I can see where the silent treatment can be very damaging when you have the large square footage of a house to hide and avoid the other person.
