The Miraculous Transformation of a Bad Bishop. Taimanov vs Averbakh. Zurich 1953

One of the most interesting games of the legendary tournament in Zurich in 1953. The game is characterized by White's persistent efforts to clear a path for his fianchettoed queen's bishop to reach the weakened kingside dark squares. Another theme of the game is the accumulation of small advantages in order to deliver the final blow at the decisive moment.

Them Soviets of that generation, 1950's, played some games that provide excellent instruction. Thanks for showing them.

Very good persistent efforts by Taimanov. After he exchanged his LSB and entered an opposite color bishop position, you notice the contrast in the two bishops from then on. The LSB had an unobstructed diagonal for the entire game but had no real positional effect as it was unassisted by fellow black pieces, whereas the DSB was for almost the entire game locked in but it’s influence was constantly threatening Black in tandem with the active white queen. Finally, the LSB left the long diagonal and was ultimately useless, while the DSB decided the game. Thanks for another very entertaining video.

Zurich 1953 is one of the greatest tournaments of history - just like Sao Petersburg 1914, Moscow 1925, Avro 1938, Linares 1994, etc...
