The Midnight House (2006) (after The Mezzotint, by M.R. James)

Oddly, this radio play doesn't acknowledge its clear debt to the M.R. James classic The Mezzotint, but anybody familiar with that story will recognise The Midnight House as an adaptation of it - albeit a rather loose one.
And fair enough - Jonathan Hall's play has plenty of its own identity, too, including a distinct and interesting setting. Derivative it may be, but it's also got plenty of originality and makes for a very entertaining listen whether one likes James or not...
MYSTERIOUS MAGPIE is a channel devoted to ghost and horror stories on British radio, and to dark tales of every kind. I have another channel, MYSTICAL MAGPIE, which is all about stories of fantasy, mythology, and adventure: / @mysticalmagpie-wo5fn
